Compression is kind of the "fairy dust" that record producers seem to believe makes their stuff sound better. It makes it sound louder, but it makes you tired. I've heard theories that it's the reason people tend to hit the SKIP button on their mp3 players so much. It's possible.
Either I'm misunderstanding what you're saying, or you're mixing up dynamic range compression (fairy dust) and file size compression (mp3).

And then there are just as many of us who have had terrible time with vista. My aunt got a dell that came loaded with vista. She has a hard time reading the screen, so first thing I did was increase the text size. Apparently that requires a reboot. On the fourth attempt at booting, it decided not to lock up, and I got back to the interface. Everything was ugly and I couldn't move any window more than 2/3s across the screen. There was an invisible wall. So I set the text back, and rebooted again.

Then I went to copy her mail form outlook express to windows mail. I moved the proper files over from the other computer, and loaded windows mail. I pointed it to the files, and it spat out "file in use, or wrong file type" or some other such BS. I tried saving the DB in different formats etc. Eventually I discovered that what this error really meant was "Windows mail can't import user data as a user. Please re-run this program as administrator" why the fuck couldn't they just say that?

My experience with that box has continued in a similar vein. The computer is as slow as her old box, yet has 4 times the memory and at least that many times the processing power. I find it simply inconcievable anyone could run this OS.

That aside, people do. Smart people too, so there must be more to this equation. I'm not really sure what it is, but this polarized opinion is confusing.

There are programs that encrypt individual files a la truecrypt too. I don't recall which off the top of my head, but I had one set up for online data storage. The big benefit of this method is when you update one file, you upload one file, rather than your whole encrypted volume. The one I used even encrypted the file names, so you couldn't guess what they were other than by size.

It may be gaining acceptance, but it still makes one sound uneducated. This usage has no benefits over 'begs the question' and just confuses the issue. Obviously this is not a big deal, but why not just use the actually-correct phrase instead of the gaining-acceptance-but-often-seen-as-incorrect phrase. Or perhaps writing phrases like the previous one disqualifies me from this debate. Oh well.

Indeed. I consider myself environmentally minded, and it frustrates me to no end when 'environmentalists' rag on nuclear. They don't want coal (who does?), or gas, or nuclear, or hydroelectric (hurts the fish), or wind (it hurts the birds). I assume there's an argument for solar too, though I haven't heard it yet. So what option do we have left? Move back into caves?

Our energy demand aren't going to decrease, short of the apocalypse occurring, so we should push the cleanest alternative. IMO that would be nuclear, with lots of funding to get some of the newer reactor types (breeders, pebble bed, whatever) so we don't have to be so wasteful of our nuclear fuel. That would give a solid backbone of power, which could be augmented with as much 'green' power as possible.

Especially if we are going to move to electric (or hydrogen, which is just electric) cars, we're going to need to significantly increase energy production. It would be a disaster if this new production had to rely on coal or natrual gas due to these so-called environmentalists.

I'm not sure who is chasing these devices, or how a device could 'now' anything, but grammar nazi-isms aside, what the GP described is pretty much what you're talking about. They measure electricity in and electricity out, and make a guess as to the energy left based on that. The only difference to your approach is you ignore the rate at which the device is consuming energy, which would make it significantly less accurate.
