One problem is that most of the professors are the authors of those same overpriced required textbooks. Second problem, the production costs are higher because the circulation is lower for a given book (too many different textbooks means no economy of scale for printing).

As long as professors continue to do something that at best is ethically questionable there will be no solution regardless of what students do. A university might be able to get change moving by banning this practice... though they might just lose all their staff trying.

Rarely does putting more money/more people onto a project result in original ideas, at least in corporate america.

The simple answer is its fun.

The longer answer is that MS has a poor track record with actually implementing the standards they are "embracing". They take the standard, tack on a bunch of crap that isn't part of it, make that proprietary and part of their default build tools. Thus, stuff built by their software becomes unusable or annoying on other software even though it's using the "standard".

Short verion of the long answer, they've hijacked any stanard they embraced in the past.

but the above statement is like saying "if your vanilla install of Redhat 7.2 is connected to the internet, it'll get infected in a couple of hours".

The latter isn't fair to Redhat and so I don't see why it's particulary fair to Microsoft either.

Your analogy doesn't quite work though.

    1. it's not a given that a few year old vanilla distro of redhat will be infected even in a few hours (IIRC, no server functions are installed by default and if you're building a server, you should just know better).
    2. a few hours and 12 minutes are hugely different. A few hours gives time to update/patch/setup firewalls etc, 12 minutes does not.
    3. microsoft does not provide easy to download updated versions of their OS with all relevant patches included. Sure you can make a CD with all the SPs on it and then have to keep the internet disconnected until you've patched. The extra time and effort just makes it more likely to not be done by the average joe.
