Also, I seem to remember that US specialist salaries are quite a bit higher than in most onther countries. Though that might be a false rumour.
That is definitely not a false rumour. Up here in Canada it's called the "Brain Drain." We educate and train doctors, nurses, specialists and 3 years later they move down to the states, taking similar positions but at a much higher pay. It kind of sucks because because some parts of the country are desperate to keep doctors & nurses in town. The border city that I live in has started offering financial incentives to medical professionals to stick around or at least consider moving here... not sure if it's enough though:(
Mercedes and Lexus are two of the most common makes of cars used for taxis in the UK. 250,000 minicab drivers can't be wrong...
I haven't seen the Lexus taxis but plenty of Mercedes sedans in Holland. Made a 3 night trip to amsterdam recently and the mercedes taxi that I took to the airport had 857K on the odometer. Not bad.
Would all those great shows like the Sopranos, Sex in the city, Deadwood, etc ever been possible had HBO been worrying whether or not they're hurting all of those beautiful minds in the heartland?
Well, it seems to me that there are too many candidates on the stage (for both parties.) There were 10? at the last republican debate... 8 IIRC at the democratic debate. The moderator uses up 35-40% of the official time of 90 minutes asking questions.. all of the candidates are in a frenzy to make their trademark soundbites before the buzzer.. it's a fucking gameshow.
Luckily it's still early but some of these guys like Gravel, Tancredo, Thompson have all gotta go, just get them off the stage.
elected representatives don't really care what you have to say about this issue. the lobbyists that are bought and paid for by megacorps will be the ones deciding how to shape the future of the internet. you have no voice in this matter, get used to it.
It's probably the same math as they use when busting marijuana grow-operations. Police will claim 5 million bucks worth of extremely dangerous crack like marijuana but how they do it is root the plant whole, throw it in a big pile and then weigh everything (stalks/roots/etc)... what might have been 10 lbs of a decent bud turns out to be 500 in the local newspaper.
"Funny how this real threat - contaminated coders - is being overlooked. 5 years from now, Microsoft will be in a position to get injunctions against any distro that uses code touched by them, based on tried and tested copyright law, not patents. That's a real danger"
This fear has had me concerned about the Gnome Desktop project. IIRC Many of the gnome devs work at Novell (novell acquired Ximian a few years back.) So guys like Miguel De Icaza are blazing away on.NET and gtk/gnome and various other projects... has there been an investigation as to what harm they are potentially causing to these gpl works?
but some of the shills here on slashdot, bought and paid for by microsoft, will argue that alan cox is proposing a very radical solution. They will suggest the very fundamentals of the freemarket system are at stake; to suggest dissolving what is offered in america would be akin to pullling the pubic hair from a teenage girls blissful nether regions, strand by strand, before she is able to mature. Thus denying her the chance to jump head first and stark naked into Friedman's fantastical whirlwind freemarket extravaganza.
Microsoft should be forced to open up their source code, for all their products.. Office, Vista, search engine, flight sim, drm, media player, etc etc. Then we can find out which patented "methods" and algorithms they are infringing upon. Until then, they should STFU.
Well, ya, that's the point. Online gambling hasn't stopped because of the ban, it just goes on in the shadows . Hopefully they'll do something about cannabis as well. Taxing it like beer & gambling seems like a better option than wasting money on incarcerating people.
Maybe the linux kernel & lots of gnu software does infringe on microsoft patents. That's a very real possiblity, I don't know for sure though. What sucks is that microsoft can hide any patent violations in their closed/hidden source software. Is there a way to force them in court to open it up so third parties can go on a fishing expedition of their code?
although that sounds interesting, i don't really understand how RNA encodings can manifest themselves as memories to the conscience mind... all of it seems very spooky.
how that mushy grey matter in the skull can "record" memories.. the brain is just a bunch of nerve cells right? can a slice of the brain be put under a microscope and analyzed to see what memories it holds? My instinct says no.. all you'll see is a bunch of dead cells. What the fuck is a memory anyways? Shit, I gotta lay off the ganja for the night.
musicians smoke too much pot and drink excessively all the while stealing from society, retiring from their glamorous lives into a perpetual state of welfare state addiction. About time somebody did something about these cultural bloodsuckers.
just for a second and let these guys talk.. stop injecting himself into the conversation and stop trying to cast doubt on science with the stupid comments like, "Oh look, scientists are flip-flopping on the big bang.. are you freaked out? is science supposed to work this way? some folk in the heartland will be skeptical of this."
Is it illegal in the u.s. to talk about or to even write stories about incest? I ask because apparently this all started when the "warriors for innocence" project said they have been reporting live journal blogs to law enforcement. I always figured it was the act, not story writing that was the problem.
Not since Oka has any politician been willing to challenge them.. I'm not so sure we'll see another showdown like that for a long time, the indians would have to do something truly over-the-top, something that would force the government & army to move in and and clean things up. Until then, they'll just poking and prodding us, seeing what they can get away with.. while living on our tax dollars.
Even the terrorism superhero Harper doesn't dream of taking the indians on.

Please think of the CEOs! They have to put bread and water on their plates too :~(

time to blow the lid off of civilization and bring the truth out.

"Isn't lying to Congress illegal?"
I'm sorry but I dont recall.
But I worked hard to establish my solid online reputation, it has girth, you can really put your hands around it and sink your teeth in.
Here's a hint. It makes you look retarded. It's like a 5 year old calling somebody poopyhead or something.
Ya, childish, immature and juvenile.. I agree, this is the kind of behaviour I would only expect of our senators like John McCain.
