I have the same problem with my cell-phone only having service in parts of the house while it works beautifully in others.. I don't understand why this is, it's a wood framed house, there's no big towers or obstacles that would limit service in this neighbourhood. The cell phone works in my dining room but not my bedroom or living room, and they're all within 10 steps of each other.
I'm anxious for the day that strange human/animal chimeras suddenly appear in society.. Or maybe animals like gorillas genetically altered so their voice box/trachea/etc are able to produce a human like voice. Lets accelerate their inevitable evolution,. Or dogs/cats grown with human brains & eyes.. Maybe even pets with designer colours, exotic colours like those parrots in the congo. We could mix all this stuff up, create some something wicked, a unicorn ? Hell ya.. or some other mythological creature. A horse/rhino hybrid.
The picture of the day on the cbc.ca website was of a Soyuz rocket being taxied to the launch pad, great picture btw.. (caption from cbc website) "Russian Soyuz rocket booster is taken to a launch pad at Baikonur Cosmodrome, Sept. 29. The next U.S.-Russian space crew, including U.S. space tourist Gregory Olsen, is scheduled to blast off on Oct. 1. (File: AP Photo/Ivan Sekretarev)"
"So here's the technical nitty gritty before we drop the graphs n' charts on ya. Both systems use the same kind of 405nm wavelength blue-violet laser, but their optics differ in two ways. Since the Blu-ray disc has a tighter track pitch (the single thread of data that spirals from the inside of the disc all the way out--think grooves on a 12-inch vinyl single vs. an Elvis Costello full-length album), it can hold more pits (those microscopic 0s and 1s) on the same size disc as HD DVD even with a laser of the same wavelength.
The differing track pitch of the Blu-ray disc makes its pickup apertures differ, however--0.65 for HD DVD vs. 0.85 for Blu-ray--thus also making the two pickups technically incompatible despite using lasers of the same type. HD DVD discs also have a different surface layer (the clear plastic layer on the surface of the data--what you get fingerprints and scratches on) from Blu-ray discs. HD DVD use a 0.6 mm-thick surface layer, the same as DVD, while Blu-ray has a much smaller 0.1mm layer to help enable the laser to focus with that 0.85 aperture.
Herein lies the issues associated with the higher cost of Blu-ray discs. This thinner surface layer is what makes the discs cost more; because Blu-ray discs do not share the same surface layer thickness of DVDs, costly production facilities must be modified or replaced in order to produce the discs. A special hard coating must also be applied to Blu-ray discs, so their surface is sufficiently resilient enough to protect the data a mere 0.1mm beneath--this also drives the cost up. The added benefit of keeping the data layer closer to the surface, however, is more room for extra layers.
Still with us? No? Blu-ray discs are more expensive, but hold more data--there, that's all."
I'm not entirely clear how dsl/cable access is achieved for customers in the u.s.... up here in canada it's sort of a monopoly for cable access, depending on which region you're in. For DSL, I believe many companies offer service in the same localities.. service is good, I get mine through cogeco cable, downtime in the last two or three years i could count with one hand (in hours.) The speed is decent as well, I regularly get 500KiloBytes/sec download from torrent sites and my upload speed maxes out at 85 KiloBytes/sec (very easy to keep my ratios at 1.5:1 or better.)
Many of my friends have experienced the same with DSL, although it doesnt seem as robust as cable when I'm using it... maybe responsive is a better adjective to use.. Even people out in the small towns from the cities, 40-100 miles still have decent broadband service.
As well, you might say that Microsoft is warming up to Open Source because they included some OSS utilities with VISTA or whatever their latest operating system incarnation is...
It's even worse than that, as I understand most counties won't do recounts unless the final result between the candidates is a narrow 1% (ie. 50% 49%).. and on top of that, it's illegal in many states to do a recount if the result isn't within those narrowly defined boundries....
Why are people scared of recounting? Why is it this way ? Even if someone wins with 95% of the vote, why not have a recount to verify it????
Not long ago I was having a conversation with some friends. All of us were stoned and couldn't remove ourselves from where we sit, we were all stuck, some very high quality shit we were smoking (took everybody by surprise because it didn't cost all that much.) Anyways, I started an argument over whether or not the moon was flat, stating that it was not a sphere/globe like everybody believes.. more or less I argued it was a solid carbon disc floating above earth created by an ancient race of silicon based alien insects... I'm not sure how long it took but everybody ended up agreeing with me...
AFAIK, sip is being coded and/or already added.. it has voice, video, text chat... open source and in pretty good shape compared to the pre-alpha software in the story..
(a) connecting to host X (possibly multiple times) download a file you know to be illegal to possess.
How are you sure that host X is caching that data? Your request may have simply been forwarded to another host and then the data was routed through host X... and even if host X is caching that data, you cannot prove it as the files are encrypted, plus each file on freenet is split into chunks of 4k/16k/64k/256k/etc.... Maybe it only has one part of that illegal data, you can't be sure.

A while ago I asked a few people on irc if there was a way to access nfs shares in windows and was told no.... would these unix services let me do that ?
Is slashdot being paid by the winzip authors to post this story ? Sure it might be widely used but how about posting a story about an opensource/free compression package ????? At the top of my screen there's a bar with links to "freshmeat, sourceforge, thinkgeek, "... Does Malda and his crew care about that stuff anymore or is this just a sleazy and easy money making operation for them ?
One of the worst things about wearing glasses up north is the fogging.. being outside in -25c temperatures for even a few minutes and glasses get cold enough that they fog up when paying for gas, or shovelling snow, etc.. pain in the ass. I welcome this new technology:)
She was really delicious as I remember her, even released some revealing photos of herself sometime into that gig.. A good investment IMHO. Funny thing in her blog a few months ago, she got scammed by some paypal bozo.. lost herself a few grand on a alienware laptop.. here's the link, read from February 19th, 2005 (halfway down the page) and go up...
that micropayments are just around the corner ? Somehow ? Maybe I'm just thinking wishfully here .. :(

What's that shuttle in the background ??
just integrate everything - thunderbird, firefox and sunbird into one big application ?

That's pretty much how wikipedia operates AFAIK
Thanks for the idea, always looking for something new and exciting.

consider my name... ah come on, it's a joke.. laugh okay ?
For those of us who truly appreciate encryption on a higher intellectual level, like I do, this is a very sad day.

I think many women that have undergone mastectomies would say the same thing (hysterectomy patients as well..)
