It sounds like an ok idea, but why have the tag at all then. If you need to handle the document, to manually turn it on, why use wireless technology at all.

What is the point of putting these chips in passports?
I am would like to hear some reasons for doing this and not just "A spokeswoman said the department is convinced the electronic passports will provide enhanced security."
How will this increase security? There is already a bar code in the back of my passport. I have no idea what it says but a machine should be able to read it. I would think it would be easier to get a machine to read the text and the picture on the front page than to put chips in the passports and then deploy readers for them all over the place. Am I completely wrong?
Who is going to make these chips? I might like to buy some stock.
I have read a bunch (not all) of the comments here and understand that many people do not want this, but can a few people discus, even as a devil's advocate why this might be a good idea?
While I think this contest is a good idea I am not sure a winner would have had to make any major technological breakthroughs. I do not think that a real climber robot would use a spotlight as power and the tether loop only needed to be stronger than the standard NASA provided. It seems like this contest is more a way to get people started thinking about the problems involved in a space elevator and to be thinking imaginatively in general.
do you really think that "they" have a database they could reference to find out what printer serial number goes to what citizen?
"They" might be management at a corporation or higher ranking officers police departments who are trying to find the insider complaining about illegal/unethical activity. These sorts of people would have easy accesses to many of the printers involved. It might also figure into corporate espionage. It might help crackers break into a systems. I think the point is that it is difficult to remain secretive (legally or not) if there is information floating around about the things you are doing that you cannot control.
By the way:

While moving between star, open or microsoft office is trivial for technical people, the average user has major problems with the gui being slighting different and commands being in different menus.
It may be that technical people, at times, have as much or more trouble with GUI changes than those who are less technical. While functions may not change it is quite frustrating to have to deal with small changes with icons and there cute little pictures. Also, non technical people assume that there is some logical reasons for these changes and want help from those who are more technically inclined.
Many need education more than anything. This helps solve that.
I mostly agree but a laptop does not equal an education.
I do not have any facts to support what I am about to say but it seams that many of the immigrants and many blue collar workers here in the U.S. would not be helped much by laptops alone and I do not think that the situation would be much different in an area where a persons experience excludes computer skills and work. I do mean that these people are not intelligent enough to use a computer. I just mean it would be like giving IT works bulldozers and other earth moving equipment. What are they going to do with it?
I do not mean to say America is perfect but we (as Americans) are relatively safe from certain sorts of persecution from our government. We should be using our freedoms to improve conditions and not just complaining about them.

"Only in America!"
I don't think so.
We need to put things in perspective. We are not (yet) banning political parties or executing journalists. I don't mean our freedoms are not in danger, but we are in comparatively good shape.
America might not be altogether perfect but we have slashdot.

So, why not just use our new Read IDs? Won't they positively identify us as being who we say we are? Maybe the finger print solution is only temporary until 2008 when we get our National ID cards.

I am not sure why vandon's post was not moderated up, but I think this is a good point. This is exactly the sort of thing Real IDs are for. The bill has been signed into law. Of course since the Real IDs are going to be universally readable it will be easy to make copies for your friends.

But you can print the photos on the same paper as film photos. They should be just as durable.
Don't forget you can print digital images on good paper.
The viewing public deserves to be laughed at...

How about just Gauss. He was pretty smart? Maybe Euler?
Hey, I like emacs.
Of course this is from a company that would want me thrown in jail for sharing a copy of there software with someone else.

Why do you need newer and fancier GPS satellites when you can just use satellite television signals.

I thought the point is that this is a credit card and with a credit card you could loose a lot more. It might even reflect on your credit rating.
Is this really the last time?
Yes, but you would have to go first.

No, a true geek keyboard has only one key it is either off or on.
File sharing could present real identity theft issues.
