  1. Until we see the actually specifics... on European PS3 To Play Fewer PS2 Games · · Score: 5, Insightful

Anything else is blowing smoke. It may be inferior to US/JAP PS3, how HOW inferior, the US machine plays close to 100% (it was 98% but many things were fixed in the 1.5 firmware). If the compatability initially drops to say 80%, and improves over time to say 90%, i don't think thats too bad. It's certainly offset by the fact I am getting a rev2 model, with for sure other hardware tweaks to improve reliability, based on the US beta test programe.. As for the price, people forget, the US price does not include any sales taxes or local taxes, the UK, and EU prices do include all taxes... Whilst it's still more expensive, it's 17.5% less than it was... Plus, EU gets 1Yr warranty minimum on all new purchases, I think the US is 90 days.. I would imagine this also has a bearing...

OK, your obviosly an idiot, so I will explain.. PS2 is a Sony product, PS3 is also a Sony product. If you add the numbers together, Sony consoles outsold everything else. Now some people will say this in bad. I however think this is smart. Sony can compete at the low end, with the WII, and the High end with the 360, and based on these numbers, it is doing pretty well. The other benefit, ofcourse, is that PS2 owners today, are very likely to be PS3 owners when the price drops, due it's near 100% backwards compatabiliy. With the European launch in 1 months time, the PS3 sales will jump further, as there are some kick-ass titles for the EU lauch, which will bolster US and Jap console sales.

Go back and read the article, the 360 version does the same trick of data duplication. WHilst you are at it, do some reading up on CLV and CAV and the differences. Drive speeds and data transfer rates between DVD and Blu-Ray as not as Blu and White as Microsoft would like you to believe.... Reality is, the 12x DVD speed (Only on single layer disks, from what I can tell), is CLV, so the data transfer at best, is 16MBytes/Sec, but at worst on the outer edge of the disk, it's more like 6MBytes/Sec. Blu-Ray is a constant 9MBytes/Sec across the entire disc surface.

It's also been commented on here, that the PS3 costing $500 will outperform a PC costing the same price, once you factor in CPU, Motherboard, Memory and OS, your graphics card budget would be about $100. You want it both ways. In UK, and I think in mainland western Europe (EU countries), everything has a 12 month warranty, if it fails in the 1st 12 months, then you get a free repair/replacement. In virtually everywhere else in thr world, it's 3 months or less. Do you expect this level of consumer protection for free? Consoles cost more here, because: a) our goverments impose taxes on these type of goods b) the manufacturers factor in failure rates, and the length of warranty periods. That is why goods (not just PS3) cost more in Europe than the US.

The comment about the 2SKU's being it harder for developers to target a SINGLE stable platform, is not really fair, as Sony have cut features from the basic that don't matter to developers. Having everything including the basic units equiped with HDD and Blu-Ray was the most sensible decision Sony made. They have stuck with this decision all the way. It would have been very easy to equip the high end unit with Blu-Ray, and the Lo-End with DVD, but they have resisted doing things the "Microsoft Way", after seeing the damage not including a HDD in the basic model has done. Personally, as a European, who has a PS3 on order, whilst I am annoyed at Sony for treating us (yet again) as 3rd class citizens, I am not cancelling my PS3 order for 2 reasons. 1/ By the time it does ship, there will be a massive queue of killer launch titles. 2/ The system will be more mature. 3/ It will still be a serious kick-ass console/movie/media centre. I can easilly resist the temptation to buy a XBox360 or Wii (if that makes it's Nov debut), as I still have faith that Sony will deliver.
