I think the story is different in the US, where XBox360 seems to be doing OK, Outside the US however, it's a very different story. My local store has ample supply of both the basic and the full systems. The in-store demo consoles are usually empty, even thou they are switched on. I also don't know anyone that owns a XBox360.
Most poeple are waiting for PS3, to either buy one, or for the PS3 to make MS drop the price of the XBox360. Either way, nobody over here in Europe is buying the XBox360 in any great quantities.
Whilst there may have been a brisk trade in the run-up to XMas, it was MS fuelled hype, when people actually saw the lacklustre games, the buying frenzy soon died down to a trickle..
It seems marketting men are trying to put a positibe spin on things, but it's not wearing...
I have no idea who Miro is, and personally, I would be thankful that the biggest search engine in the world is highlighting this guy, for numskulls like myself to discover his work..
Perhaps they just want a payout from Google. ah the American legal system, I can just imagine the $$$ symbol in the lawyers eyes...
Given that the chip under test is a mobile part. If you want a Intel Core chip, with EMT64, wait for Conroe, it's just around the corner, and does 64bit just fine.
Don't know what transistor overhead adding EMT64 would have been, but I assume some, so omitting EMT64 for a mobile chip seems a sensible option.
Actually, we only have half a law int he UK. The penalty for getting caught on your cellphone whilst driving, is a fixed penatly £30 fine, no points on your driving licence.
What this means, if you are a member of the BMW/Porsche/Audi club, you can afford to get caught every day, with no problems.
In the UK, they need to:
a) actually ENFORCE this part of the law
b) make it a 3 point on your licence offence (more than 12 = driving ban).
Whilst their music division may have had their root kit "blip", generally they have been pretty trustworthy, even the rootkit issue, some people are taking totally out of context, and based on their comments, they obviosly did not even suffer from it.
Microsoft on the other hand, I wouldn't trust at all... They have had dodgy practices going on for years...
What have the cut off the PS3? Nothing as far as I am aware, that's why it's delayed. This is the same reason XBox has been with us for 6 months, as loads of features WERE cut.
As I see it, I can buy a not quite next gen console now, or a proper next gen console is 6 months time.
how fickle and swayed some posters here are. Sony has not distributing Spyware with their Rootkit. It was ONLY a rootkit... Whilst not really acceptable, some people really seem to be bigging it up.
Not sure how the XB360 has a head start. In the UK, shops have plenty on the shelves, and are not selling in any great quantity, and when I was in NYC last weekend, GameStop even had stock of 2nd user XB360 consoles!!
Sounds like the initial rush to pick up the latest gadget, end users are slowly realising it was a rushed to market product, with lacklustre game line-up.
Whilst i'm sure the quality of games will improve over the coming months, Summer is not a good time for console sales, so I don't anticipate many consoles being sold between now and PS3 launch in November...
When you live in Europe.
This is GOOD news, as we were originally getting PS3 early 2007, now it's Nov 2006. Good move on Sony to release in all regions simultaniously.
I think the original plan was for June for Japan, October for USA, Jan 2007 for Europe, so the US release is only a month later than originally planed, and still in-time for Xmas.
It also means longer time for developers to get their games upto scratch, and more time for Sony to sort PSP and online gaming integration.
Good news all round...
You can put any modern OS on the net, with Apache and SSHD the only available services, and it will be secure. This includes XP, Win2k3, Linux, Solaris etc etc etc..
This test proves nothing...
I have installed OO2.01 Win32 in a few peoples machines, that don't want to buy an office suite, whilst largly happy, I can see it's horrendously slow compares to Office 2k3.
10 years is a bit harsh, I would say 5-7, it OO2.01 makes a good upgrade for Office 97 users, that about it... Under non-windows OS, it's a different story however...
One of the worst purchases I ever made.
What saddens me the most, this hardware is awesome, sound quality is fantastic. It's the shoddy software that is unusable. How Sony managed to release this still baffles me.
I would not buy an iPod, simply for the very poor sound and build quality, so as a consumer, there are few little options (Creative or iRiver perhaps...)
I am hoping Sony sort thir sh1t out quickly, Connect software is a fiasco, SonicStage is slightly better, but incompatible with the lastest Sony devices.
The best they can do, is fix forget about Connect Player, and fix SonicStage to work with the latest players.
can't wait. Not entirely sure what "Bone" is thou...
Sam and Max is a classic, and LucasArts were fools to let it drop. Lets hope the new guys can do it justice.
XBox bundling HD-DVD is too late now. for it to make any difference, the unit need to be standard from the outset. Developers will not make HD-DVD games, as not all consoles will be able to play them, so HD-DVD is destined to be a expensive add-on purely for movies.
I think Sony have done the smart thing here, not going for the quick $$, and holding out, making their next gen console, with next gen storage AS STANDARD. games and movies can then take advantage of the storage format.
Thats a good reason alone to carefully audit software before using it. Myself, ActiveX is totally disabled, I run normally as Restricted user accounts, and use Opera as my browser and email client, and VLC as my media player.
Like I said, a Locked Down enviroment. I was not claiming a standard install of XP was as secure as OSX.
Only someone who has used Microsoft software exclusively for his entire life could be such a fanboy.
bzzzztt, wrong.. I use XP (pro and x64) as desktops, and Linux (Gentoo and Debian) as servers.
They both excel at what they do. MacOS is not very good at either...
Exactly WHY is MacOSX safer than Windows? Because of it's small marketshare? Sure some of Windows XP default setting are based on functionality rather than security, but this can all be locked down.
A locked down XP system, is as secure as MacOSX, if not MORE secure, as who knows what other gotchas are waiting in OSX to be exploited, whereas XP has had been constantly improving things...
I thought the increase was in bus bandwidth, and that was only used when tranferring large textures that are too big for the graphics card's onboard memory, so the main memory can be used.
Seing as most GPU's of this calibre are 256MB, I think a 25% performance increase is only likely if your handling large (>256MB textures). Again, I may be totally wrong, but does anyone know?
I suppose the question is.
Given 2 cards, 1xAGP implementation, 1xPCIe implmentation, with the same GPU, and asusming that they are handling textures less than the maximum amount of onboard memory, will they perform the same? Does PCIe increases bandwidth only benefit when larger textures are used??
Anyone know for sure?
Well my 18 month old Asus A8V board supports the the latest AMD Dual Core processors (AMD64 4800+), does Dual Channel DDR RAM and has a AGP port. Does this mean it's not as powerful as the latest PCIe system?
I think more likely, PCIe was introduced to make the fools with more money than sense go and buy new Mobos and graphics cards....
How about creating images with GSX Server and then using VMWare Player to use the images? Does VMware player provide any snapshot swithing capabilities?
Pretty laughable. They still havn't got full NTFS support in Linux yet. Perhaps they should concentrate on their 1st....

Who wants a EMT64/AMD64 in a mobile processor? it serves no purpose. I think the AMD fanboys are realising that the sleeping giant is waking up...

Errm, that because what you can do with a mac is so limited...
both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD player will read CD/DVD formats, so there is no nead to go out and stock up on old hardware!!

Control Panel applets don't rely on ActiveX at all. I dont encounter very much at all that does ActiveX
