You're entirely missing the grandfathers point. The overwhelming majority of people do not carry a camera around with them. Even if you're a professional photographer do you carry your SLR do-dah when going to the pub, a friends house, do you leave it in the car in every instance?
Yes most can see the different in quality between 2 and 8 MP but its not about quality but about convenience. The arguement is that they DO have a place for use with everyone and provide something that the regular SLR on a tripod with crap loads of gear can not provide - they're small and ready to use in seconds. Its not about 2 v. 8 MP quality but about 2MP v. not having ability to take a photo at all.
No its not - $16M over 8 years over 43 organsations is about 50K per group per year. That IS nothing for trying to persuade the Bush admin policies etc.
And in the 70's we were "observing" climate change cooling down we were told by scientists. And it was non-disputable then.
But the question is this: How much is the change due to us (from 0-100%) or natural cycles (0-100%)? I don't think there were SUVs around during the last ice age so we know its not all us.
And further, should we be trying to counteract "mother nature" to provide a conistent climate?
I think this is a report that is trying to link some sort of monies to conspiracies and agendas. $15M spread across 42 (to remove the one high example they use) organizations over 8 years = $45K a year on average. Its a lot to an individual but hardly enough to fund "access to the Bush administration to block federal policies and shape government communications on global warming".
Further, I see froth but no substance - no irrefutible proof saying that Exxon doesnt mind global warning or that it doesnt exist, or even that they dont care. The best I can see is that a group that recieved money "touted a book". Incidently, they use this as "an example" because the group recieved $600K - far above the average amount given, so its hardly a typical example.
This is clearly a biased report hoping to use allegations and bend them into truth. I am a sceptic but in the sense that I dont think anyone has a grasp on whats really going on, whats normal, and how much us humans have played a part in any change that has happened. I'm a skeptic when anyone tells me they have all the answers.
2007 is the year of Linux. By the end of the year, the tipping point will be passed and all of the major vendors will be considering it as a pre-install or be losing serious business, kind of like Dell and Intel.
Thats what I heard about 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003, 2002, 2001, 2000, 1999, 1998 and in 1997. And it will continue until the Linux community stops following someone else, be it MS, Apple or whoever. The Linux community has to make proper strides in software development on its own account if it wants to get anywhere.
They do it for a reason - if you don't like it you're free to start up a coffee shop that has super cheap coffee with every store looking like some wack job (and in the process completely destroying any brand identity).
The US needs people like me to spend money there; I don't need to spend my money in the US
The US doesnt need people to spend money in the US - it can, and easily does, need people to spend money in their own countries. Just about everytime you brush your teeth, work on a computer, watch some tv, listen to music you're probably paying some money to a US company in some way. Tourists not spending money in the US due to privacy issues at Border Control is not going to cause any significant economic problems.
In about half an hour you'll be able to see a flume of smoke rising from the building - it'll be the first time we can physically see a slashdotting in action.
good post - Jim Blinn I believe is at MS and look at what he's done. There is good research done at MS but the/. crowd want to highlight Bob\IE\Vista graphics etc. If/.'s want to be taken seriously in the field of CS they really need to grow up and show a bit of smarts instead of spewing out at everything.
No, no waitress (to use the analogy) is perfect. The manager is continuely updating the IQ of the waitress to counteract the lack of IQ by the customer to prevent themselves from infection.
But ultimately the customer can go to plenty of other restaurants in town you can use. But dont forget that you have to bring your own waitress.
Actually this is a very good point. I listen to BBC Radio 4 and BBC 7 (over the internet) from the US - whilst there are plenty of shows I'd like them to put on there are many that I've enjoyed that I wouldn't have done a search on.
Similiarly, terrestrial radio I pretty much only listen to in the car on the way to and from work. Whilst I enjoy the current affairs and news opinions etc. its not something I would pay for.
Perhaps, BUT it is involving itself in decisions between companies going against a legal decision. Of course I agree with ICANNs decision but being "right" dissolves one of being able to claim "impartiality".
Please explain the numbers. 0.01% of $1.5BN in Tesco profits from customers == $150,000 profit
Or, did you mean Tescos has exposure to say 10M households in the UK, 0.01% == 1000 customers, buying at $30 per copy == $30,000 in sales
A runaway success? If you think thats a runaway success I can't imagine what you think of MS Office as a success.
You know, for 80% of people in this world they'd say the exact same thing about people like you with iPods, 'puters, HDTVs, digital cameras etc.
I'd suggest getting of your high horse and realize that people with a lot of money actual tend to have MORE common sense (not all, most) - you need it to either make it and\or retain it. And besides, its theirs to spend it how they want - to be able to go into space, even for a mere few seconds, would be a trip of lifetime.
Yes, under complete duress. The USA didnt want to be involved in WW2 and when forced they tried to end it peacefully - unconditional surrender by the Japanese was the only way. The Japanese tried to call the US bluff and lost. It was a terrible loss BUT the Japanese had every chance to end it - they didnt have to aggressively attack, prolong the war or try to dictate terms when facing defeat. The US were just doing what it took to defend their citizens right to existance. Not only that but due to Japanese resistance by all estimates it lessened the number of people that would've died anyway.
Quite agree. Apparently when you have 25% of the market share and you're Firefox\Apple etc. we should all take notice and develop for them since thats considered a huge market share. If you're MS\IE apparently 25% is a rather meagre figure and one should be developing for the majority out there. Thats hypocrisy.
But thats YOUR opinion. If web designers want to make them look pretty using Flash (or whatever) instead of a grey background and slimlined text then its upto them. FWIW I agree with you, BUT the point is, its their site, they're paying for it and their design for their customers.

Their existance and that corporations are always wrong no matter what.

Perhaps your right-wing consipracy theory isnt correct.
...or, if memory serves, the moveon.org ad trying to associate a republican candiate to the horrific dragging of an African American behind a truck.

then, and I know this is a hard concept, dont buy the friggin phone if its going to get you caught at something you shouldnt be doing.
And I'll go over to the Beeb website when I read about Stuff That Matters thats not IT.
Are they building a Beowolf of negotiations?
/. ?
Perhaps KJI is throwing chairs?
Has someone localized North Korean in some P2P app?
Will someone explain why am I reading this on

How and when exactly do you "imagine" this world to come into being? I'm not saying it can't or won't happen, I'm just curious as to how.
