  1. MS Will Increase Unfair Advantage on Browser Wars 2: Electric Boogaloo · · Score: 1

For the average computer user this is a very good thing as it should drastically improve browser performance in a short period of time.

More like drastically increase Microsoft's unfair market practices... They'll just find more ways to integrate IE with Longhorn so that you literally can't do anything in the OS without it... I can also see them adding more online interaction with the OS and Windows Update or whatever on microsoft.com that can only be done through IE's ActiveX Controls.

Installing Linux "all the way to where granny can use it" would take about as long as the Kubuntu installation. Seriously, what are they going to do besides use Email and Firefox, plus maybe a few games that can be found in the KDE menu?

I personally believe that the easiest Linux converts are non-PC-gaming high-end users and the really low-end users that only need web browsing and email. The hard converts are those in the middle who might have some niche program or hardware that has no equivalent (perhaps better, but not what they're used to) alternative in Linux.

If they want to make the console more expensive fine, but the only way to win me back would be to lower the price of the games....

Sadly, the price of a console and the price of games for it are fairly directly related. If the console costs more, it follows that it should be more powerful, so the games for it probably cost more to make than they would on a lower-end console. This cost is, of course, made up for by charging more for the game.

what is Pascal used for these days? What are it's inherent advantages over other languages?

In all practicality, nothing. It is no longer needed in much of anything, even the niche it used to occupy, and this is illustrated by the fact that this project has apparently taken five years or development to reach 2.0. When there's a serious lack of interest in a project, there are usually one of three reasons:

    • The need or niche for it is not yet realized.
    • Not enough potential users know about it
    • The need for it does not exist

I have a feeling the case for this project is the third, especially in the F/OSS world.

In short Nintendo don't neccesarily have to shift more consoles than Sony and MS to stay in the console game.

This very realization was what made me stop worrying about how Nintendo was doing in comparison with their competitors. For awhile, I thought that if Nintendo didn't keep up with Sony and MS, they would go the way of Sega and the quality of Nintendo franchises would quickly deterioriate. However, if they can turn a profit by selling less than Sony and MS, they can continue to make quality games and I have no reason to worry about their first party games.

The only bad thing that does result from low sales is less third party support, but I'm hoping that this problem will be mitigated in the next generation by lower development costs on the Revolution than, for example, Sony's new cell-based architecture.

I have been wondering why they haven't fixed this... All they would have to do is check the registry for "Mozilla Firefox (*)" in the directory of the registry where add/remove programs entries are kept (I think it's HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Unin stall, but I'm not on Windows right now so I can't check.). Seriously, would it be too hard to add this? Firefox needs to look clean and polished, and multiple entries in Add/Remove Programs is likely to give people the opposite impression.

    1. Macromedia Flash. I know this will be among the first ported when average people actually start using 64-bit CPUs, but at the moment it is very annoying to have to switch to my 32-bit machine once a week to see the new Strongbad email!

There are more, but those are the basics... I hope the move of the general public to 64-bit is quick so that the few closed-source programs that I still use will be ported!

If a browser is the default browser for an OS, it should have been designed to work flawlessly with other parts of the OS, not designed in isolation and fixed up to work at the end of development. Not that I'm saying that a better-designed IE would be good for us, since it would be harder to convince users to convert, but in an ideal development situation, the product is designed to work well, not just barely.
