    OSX is well setup to take advantage of 8-core machines.

    Of course, OSX has never actually run on an 8-core machine but we can make accurate predictions of its likely performance due to being bullshitting Mac zealots.

    PS. For comparison purposes, Windows runs on 32 processor SMP systems, Linux on 512.

    I'm no expert but I believe that if someone reports to an ISP that a particlular IP address is running a bot, that it should be a simple process for the ISP to do some tests to see if that is true by checking the nature of the traffic coming out of the machine.

    What do you think they're going to do - check for the evil bit on outgoing packets?

    Read every one of the user's e-mails to see if they are spam?

    Or just cut off anyone that has a port open?

    Midnight Commander running in a text console can do that as well. It can also do many other things and has a distinct advantage over Nautilus in that it isn't a slow, bloated, dysfunctional piece of shit.

    I think Nautilus is what put me off of GNOME many years ago. Well, that and its developers.

    PS. Konqueror also does FTP and STFP. And so does any KDE app.

    While neither NT nor Mac OS X are true microkernels, the architecture of both is strongly inspired by microkernel ideas.

    What exactly does "inspired" mean in this case? I am "inspired" by John Holmes but that doesn't mean I have a 12" cock does it?

    If you talk to kernel programmers, most will express a high degree of respect for the NT kernel, which is based on the DEC VMS kernel. It mostly the poor design of systems that sit on top of the kernel that has earned Windows its reputation.

    So, did VMS have a graphics subsystem in the kernel as well? Also can you provide some examples of kernel experts praising the NT kernel for its microkernel properties? Thanks in advance.

    This is an essential tool. If you need to remove a chip from a DIP socket whilst leaving a variable number of pins still in it, it just can't be beat.

    Actually the new version can run 32,000 simultaneous processes. I shit you not.

    As we all know, emebedded software developers have been crying out for the ability to run 32,000 processes on a fucking PDA for years.

    how's the state of the support for the sky2 / Yukon Ethernet card that is usually shipped inside Centrino Solo/Duo laptops? Suse 10.1 RC3 did not properly perform a DHCP on my laptop's internal sky2 LAN - it just hung.

    Well that just settles it guys. We need to halt any further kernel development until such time as flowerp's shitty wireless card can get an IP from his shitty router under his shitty commercial Linux distro.

    There's just no point in continuing otherwise.

    Um, those benchmarks are only for statistical computations. I don't know about you but most computer users aren't performing statistical analysis. Ask anyone who uses a Mac on a regular basis and they'll tell you it hums along nicely.

    Yeah, those benchmarks only demonstrate mathematical performance. Mac owners don't use their computers for doing sums so those benchmarks don't matter. For computing tasks which don't involve any maths, Macs just can't be beat.

    This is why stories in the BSD section get so few comments. All of the BSD elitists are too busy hanging out in the Linux section waiting to tell us about the time the driver for their Gravisound Ultra failed to compile and they were forced to switch to BSD for evermore.

    Anyway, just picking up on your example I was wondering in what ways NetBSD's sound support is better than Linux? I assume that BSD supports more sound chips, supports more features of the sound chips that it has drivers for and allows much lower latency recording and playback than Linux. Right?

    Or are you just going to trot out some tired old lines about how NetBSD's sound support is better designed, more elegant and has cleaner code than Linux? Things which when you get right down to it make precisely fuck all contribution to how useful the OS actually is for recording and music production.

    I don't doubt that the code for ProTools or Cubase is messy compared to the simple elegance of Sox, but that doesn't mean production studios are going to switch to it.

    I don't think the "Wii" name is really going to be a problem in the UK. Everybody I know has always referred to the Gamecube as the "Gay Pube" anyway, due to its wonderful design and adult-oriented games. So frankly Wii is likely to be an improvement.

    The Viewpoint Media Player also comes pre-installed on Dell PCs, at least in the UK. Although they also come with every piece of crapware that AOL have ever produced, so it may be a part of that.

    I uninstalled it as soon as I saw it on the principle that anything calling itself a media player that isn't WMP, Winamp etc.. is almost certainly adware or spyware and should be terminated with extreme prejudice. Unless it's called Quicktime, in which case just burn the computer. Before all the Apple fans get upset, I'm not suggesting that Quickime is spyware. No, I'm merely suggesting that it's the crappiest, most irritating piece of software ever shat into existence by anybody. I bet you thought I was going to say something controversial then didn't you?

    Swap soundcards, and the new one will be working on boot-up, just like nothing ever happened. It doesn't need crazy and buggy hacks like many Linux distros use.

    Oh man, that's awesome! I've always wanted an OS that loaded drivers for every single peripheral ever made just in case I ever plugged one of them in.

    It must be great for security as well - imagine if someone found a really nasty security hole in an obscure and seldom used driver. On Linux that wouldn't get fixed because nobody would have it loaded and so nobody would be vulnerable. But on OpenBSD it would get fixed a lot more quicky because everyone would potentially be vulnerable. You can't get much more pro-active than that.

    And thank God they have avoided crazy and buggy hacks like loadable modules and only loading drivers you actually need.

    I'm switching to BSD immediately because I am always moving my HDD from one machine to another and having my soundcard work automatically when I do that is a major plus.

    The first thing i notice after the update is that,firefox needs to be given permission to conect to 207.126.111.225 through my firewall.Only then doesnt it resolve any domian name.

    While I got suspicious if that ip was a spyware on my comp,well its mozila's site - virtual-fxfeeds.mozilla.org = [ 207.126.111.225 ]


    To save yourself a bit of time in future, simply execute the below command :

    ping -a 207.126.111.225

    And then don't bother posting to Slashdot about it afterwards, because I can assure you that nobody fucking cares about your detective work.
