I agree that the article is misleading. It does not open Word and Excel files "flawlessly". In fact, I've had a lot of problems with the formatting in Word. Also, OO.o will not open Excel files with graphs correctly. When you save the file again, you are left with corrupted graphs. I know it's not easy to fix these things. I don't blame the developers. I just think it's stupid to claim that it opens MS documents "flawlessly" when it doesn't. But I'd have to say the OO.o team is doing an excellent job. OO.o 1.9 is a huge imrovement over 1.13. Lets hope they keep up the good work.

People don't use Trillian for the same reasons most people don't use Firefox or Opera. 1st. People don't know there are alternatives. If you did a pole on the streets, I bet 99% of people will have not heard of Gaim. Trillian is much more popular I would say. 2nd. People don't care about security. Most people really could care less about security because if their computer becoms loaded with viruses they will just have one of their techie friends fix it.

  14. Include Ablock on Firefox Improves Pop-Up Ad Blocking · · Score: 3, Insightful

When is Firefox going to have Adblock built in? I see it as an essential extension, but most people won't go out of their way to download extra extensions. It would not come with a preloaded Adblock list so most people would just block ads as they see them. Can anyone tell me why they don't do this? Seems to me this would greatly increase Firefox's popularity.

Isn't it strange, for all the talk of an anarchic, libertarian, freedom on Slashdot, that it is a paternalistic government's choice of O/S and software for the poor that is being applauded here? That the masses cannot be allowed to make their own choices, because their choices might include Microsoft?

I don't see why people should be forced to pay for software when they don't want/need it. If some people decide they need Microsoft Windows they can buy it and load it on themselves.

Choices are nice, but as vectorian798 says below, we need some standards. The advantage Windows has over Linux is that when you write a program for Windows it will install on all Windows computers (without compiling the program yourself). You could fork the project so you have a choice of which program you use but we should have a standard package format. From what the flash clip shows this program looks pretty slick.
