The idea of evolving past economics sounds like a nice idea, but I doubt it'll ever happen. Economics is, at its heart, all about the exchange of resources: You have something I want, I have something you want, so we make a trade, and right there's economics. So, unless someone comes up with some kind of infinite resource that can provide all needs to everyone, there will always be a need for exchange of some sort.
Semantics. It's like arguing that no asteroid or meteor has ever struck the Earth because when an asteroid enters the Earth's atmosphere it becomes a meteor, and when the meteor reaches the ground it becomes a meteorite.
No, we're not. Stop it already with the "living planet" bullshit. The Earth is a geologically active lump of rock and metal, with a very thin layer of life on the crust. The planet itself is not alive in even the loosest scientific definition of "life".
No it isn't. It's because reproduction is a response to environmental stress.
If that were true, I would've sired about 50 kids by now. Frankly, when I was on hard times, reproduction was the absolute last thing on my mind; things like shelter, food, and water were infinitely more important.
Many species will forgo sex when their immediate survival is at stake, humans among them. Especially those that have helpless young that must be cared for... again, including humans. There's no point producing offspring if they'll simply die because we weren't there to protect and feed them.
The "World of Starcraft" mod for Starcraft II used only Starcraft assets, not WoW assets. At least, from the videos I've seen and from what I've read. I think you're confused?
Eh, not me. Don't get me wrong, I am in no way a sadist -- I take no pleasure in the suffering of others, and I'm not without compassion. But it's been my observation that if someone's sitting down and crying as opposed to rushing around frantically, then it's not a life-and-death emergency that you need to jump into, so the only thing required is (maybe) a shoulder to cry on. It's not that I don't feel sympathy, I just suck at comforting people in "their time of need" (ie. loved one passed away, or their SO left them, etc.).
Give me an emergency "oh shit" situation to deal with and I can do what needs to be done; been there, and I know I can handle it. But I'll leave the comforting to more capable hands, as I simply lack the skills (and, admittedly, the will) do adequately do so.
"If we discover a complete theory, it would be the ultimate triumph of human reason – for then we should know the mind of God."
I always thought it was a metaphor, as in to "know the mind of God" as he puts it means we'd finally understand everything about the universe, not that we'd know what a literal God is thinking.
Either some people took Mr. Hawking's statement too literally, or I misunderstood...
I've heard the term "science fantasy" used to describe the middle ground between hard SF and pure fantasy occupied by the likes of Star Trek and Star Wars, where the trappings of "advanced technology" are in fact only superficially "technological" and at their core are pure fantasy (in the literal, not literary, sense).
So...
* Science Fiction: This stuff could, theoretically, actually happen based on what we know.
* Science Fantasy: This looks like it could actually happen, but not really. May superficially resemble Hard SF but really isn't.
* Pure Fantasy: It's magic. Deal with it. The fantastical elements don't even pretend to be technological in origin.
Can't speak for the rest of you, but that seems a good break-down to me.
Quite probably the most insightful thing anybody will post in this entire thread, because it is the whole point. Frightening how many people just don't (or refuse to) understand this, and are perfectly willing to let every little freedom slip away one at a time because "that doesn't affect me right now".
You may be the favored demographic today, but as political leaders change, and, more importantly, laws change, you may find a bulls-eye on your back tomorrow when someone in power doesn't like something you say or do that was, yesterday, considered perfectly harmless.
I consider the Federal Government telling me how to design my webpage to be an undue burden.
^ This, a thousand times.
Also, I maintain a website for a small business. It's really nothing more than a spiffy advertisement for the brick-and-mortar business, including nice photos and contact info. No actual "business" is done on the site; customers need to contact us directly. So other than the potential for a few (very few) lost customers due to the site not being disabled-friendly (though our facility certainly is), what would be the purpose of redesigning the site from the ground up just to comply with what some people in government think it should be?
I would totally settle for a few dialogue trees between fights in an away mission if it meant that your choices affect the outcome of that mission's story. (And I highly doubt that such a simple thing is beyond the capabilities of the game engine.) It'd be a damn sight better than the linear missions they have now. Sure, you can choose what order to kill stuff, but the end result is always the same; keep fighting to the next point, respawning as needed (respawning? wtf...).
Couldn't agree more. The space battles were ridiculously fun -- even though after a few weeks it just felt a bit grindy (but still kinda fun). Away missions, not so much. Instead of just proceeding to the next Objective To Kill Badguys, it would've been more entertaining if it was more like a branching quest where your actions determined the outcome based on that mission's story, rather than just being more or less on rails with a predetermined ending each time.
It seems as if the devs mean well, and really want to create a fun Trek-like experience, but just aren't sure how to actually go about it. Here's a hint Crypic: Trek wasn't only about combat, it was also about some very cool stories; some were fun and entertaining, some involved gut-wrenching choices, and so on.
Just kiss and make up already. Intel and nVidia have but one choice: to join forces and try collectively to compete against AMD/ATI. Anything less, and they're cutting their nose off to spite their respective faces.
Too soon, Executus!
Hopefully it still runs on MS Windows 3.11
You mean MS-DOS 6.2, right? And not that 6.22 crap either. (Dblspace ftw!)
The goal of it is to assist the anti-Qaddafi rebels; they are the 'ground forces'.
Or so it seems based on the resolution.
Parent post is, sadly, frighteningly accurate.

(Sorry folks, had to be done. As you were.)
I am not sure if they would necessarily lean towards free will. I would think a properly trained academic would think that there is no such thing.
I am not sure that the preprogrammed responses of a "properly trained academic" are something upon which I would place much weight.

I think you were searching the wrong office. You probably want copyrights, not patents.
I heard once that the end of the universe will be predicated by the appearance of a rational AC who puts forth a reasonable argument.
...oh, shit! THE END IS NIGH!

Thank you for that. Honorary +1 Funny for you.
Free to be wrong is still wrong, the universe doesn't care.
If you're not free to make your own mistakes, you're not really free at all.
It should be:
