    So Libor Vanek mentions WWI. Then you call him totally incorrect, and cite a passage stating that 1939 had no influence on the book.

    The first sentence in that passage is enough to show Libor Vanek is mistaken. The Shire isn't meant to represent anything, the war of the Ring isn't meant to represent anything. Not in WWI nor WWII.

    I just downloaded the binary release of 4.3.0 ad installed that. Of course, this is pain because every package that depends on xfree86-common, xlibs, and xbase-clients complains about unmet dependencies. To get around this you can create your own dummy versions of these packages using equivs which takes about 5 minutes.

    But your probably better off finding some real debs.

    There have been many projects based on the GPLed code of Quake 1, like Quake Tenebrae which adds graphical capabilities that surpass Quake 3 and are nearly on par with Doom 3.

    It adds very nice lighting and texturing, but nothing more. The gameplay and modelling is still old and clunky.

    Are a lot of these postings for positions they've already filled? I know that lots of companies have to advertise jobs they've already filled for some god-forgotten reason, so they probablu have fun with them whilst trying to ensure they don't have to actually interview anyone.

    There is just one thing... I wonder how they're going to get the palantir out of Isengard? (spoiler) That plays a major role in drawing Sauron out too early. Maybe they just skip the palantir and IM him instead.

    And what about the Hobbits meeeting up with Aragorn et al? Where's that meant to take place?

    Thus, similar encryption schemes to those in use today will still be feasible, albeit with much longer keys.

    In fact, the keys would have be so big that it would take too long to encrypt anything with them and the current crypto schemes will all be useless.

    The main problem is that any reflecting surface can act as a mirror, meaning that you are constantly at risk of the laser beam bouncing back and obliterating you.

    I am guessing that "lasers of mass destruction" would operate in the ultraviolet. There aren't many materials that will reflect ultraviolet light back at you. At best it might glance off a mirror if it hits at a shallow enough angle.

    A large part of the problem is that most of America's adversaries purposefully mix their military forces in with civilians to prevent us from firing upon them.

    The last human shields I heard of were volunteer British and American citizens who travelled to Iraq to prevent 'you' from firing upon 'them'.

    Sure lets get rid of our government and you can also say good-bye to most if not all of our means of transportation, communication, research, social services, the list goes on and on and on.

    Much of this is privatized anyway. Since we wouldn't be paying riduculous amounts of tax we'd all have extra money to pay for these things directly. And we'd probably get better value for our cash.

    No, he's not. He was commenting on the culture of fear that is propagated by the US media and government. Chronologically it goes something like Afro-Americans, communists, drugs, terrorism ... be afraid! Hell, the country was settled by people with religious persucution complexes.

    Witness the Middle East ... everyone is so angry and full of hate for Israel and the US they are blind to what their own governments do to them!
    You admitted you hadn't seen Bowling for Columbine , am I right in guessing that you've never been to the Middle East either? People in the Middle east are people exactly like you or me, they are not all angry and full of hate and they are not blind to their own governments. They undoubtable have a much better idea about what is going on in their own region than you do. Just as you shouldn't rely on some random Slashdot poster to tell you about a movie, you shouldn't rely on your local media to tell you about the Middle East. Incidently the US also breeds terrorists - people who bomb abortion clinics, Timothy McVeigh, the Unabomber. Are you going to say that people in the US are all full of hate?

    Not that it really matters, but I just wouldn't describe Eddington's experiment during an ellipse as gravitational lensing.

    In fact it is so weak that it would never be able to cause photons from a distance object to converge. Therefore it will never act as a lens.
