I chose Redhat as well for my first choice of distro as well, and discovered the same anti-redhat bias in some of the chatrooms. However I found that I could still ignore the flames and get some good help, those guys rocked:) After using Redhat for a few months I decided to see what the hurrah was and try other distros. Since then I've installed Mandrake, SuSE, and now I'm giving Gentoo a go. One good thing I can say for Redhat was it's stability. For probably the first time in my computer hobby career I started having multi-week uptimes, heh. I'm not saying the other distros aren't stable, it's just I found ways to crash it easier than with Redhat, mostly dumb things like trying to run a game without X running, or running kdm in init 3 (I've since figured out the cause for that one. )
I have yet to figure out a way to crash gentoo yet, but give me time:) I still think Redhat is a good choice for a first distro due to it's stability and broad support.
I try to completely avoid the chatrooms now and just utilize google (although sometimes it can take days to figure something out.) Although the "elitists" may have a point that it helps to branch out and try a distro other than redhat to learn linux, don't take it personally it's all in fun:)
Try fce ultra. I'll agree that win98 has the edge in better emulators for more systems, but I think for me the cause of that is not tweaking with the svgalib and stuff enough (not a big priority atm:)
But I found your example kinda funny because whereas I reboot to win98 pretty much for the sole reason to play a good genesis game or snes game, with fceu I can play nes games on linux just as well as win98:) Actually from what I've seen if I just set up my svgalib and framebuffers better snes9x would run like a dream. Zsnes is definitely playable on my linux setup, albeit just a tad bit inferior to the win98 version. Gaming isn't that big of priority for me at the moment, so I haven't gone out of my way to fix up my linux setup yet:)
If you'd like to try fce ultra for a good NES emu, heres the url:)
Ya. If you make 5-6 bucks an hour and you send 30% to the government you go from not having enough to live on to being fucked beyond belief. if someone who makes 30 million a year loses 66 to the gov. and only gets 10 mil well hell the the more power to them to stick their nose at me. And you know it wouldn't be bad if I could say that 2 bucks an hour which is my fair share could go to say the military or cancer research but no it gets sent to the law enforcement who throw me in jail for smoking marijuana. It's this kind of setup which makes me want to say unspeakable things and the very least of which are FUCK YOU YOU GOAT FUCKING SENATORS REPRESENATIVES AND POLICEMEN.
Dont get me wrong I'm in for your rights as much as mine.
but turnabout is fair game I've taken so much shiz from canadians and europeans on how my government (USA) is so evil and corrupt and the antichrist and how does it feel euroslut or canadaslut now:P
when will you think it's a good idea to get along and not bitch and make fun of the people you relied on 50 years ago for your very existance:P
basically your not upgrading are you. You're not paying for the next software. what guarantees do you have that your need will be in their next software. If you didn't have good old ie to fall back on you could still code something for mozilla for the good of all humankind. for free.
mozilla isn't catching up to ie as of two years ago cause two years ago IE sucked even more than it did today:P IE sucked serious ass as of 3.0 and 4.0 was a regrouping effort and ya it won most of the market share but does that make it right:P
I can't speak for anyone but myself but I never ran it:P
I would like to extend my thanks and congratulations to the mozilla team for bringing the best browser ever yet to the world:)
Also, please don't drink and drive. Ask a sober friend for a drive, sleep on your friend's sofa, call a taxi, but let's keep this a very happy day:)
No kidding. One of the blaringly obvious truths's shown by those novels is society goes in cycles and considering atom, helium, and neutrom bombs are now a part of American popular culture, and the fact that our legislators are more concerned with keeping marijuana illegal, rewarding lobbyists, and pissing off the rest of the planet, well I'm proud to be an American, but I dont know how much longer we will exist:P Not just America but our entire species. And to be honest I'm not sure that it's a bad thing:P
Hear hear. There were what 2000 snes games, 1000 nes games, maybe 500 turbo games, 1000 or more genesis games and based on 4 violent games a judge thinks he can say that video games aren't speach? That fact in itself makes me sick as I think the art, gameplay, control, and other facets of the games are way creative and to say they aren't art or free speech is holding your hand up and saying nods I am being paid by special interests. Hi judge, why the hell can't I smoke a marijuana joint in my home without being branded a criminal? You hipocritical bastard.
Hmm. I'd say the removal of linux conf is a good thing. In fact I think that is the clincher to get me to turn all my 7.2 puters into 7.3 on that fact alone. Linuxconf sucks. O.K. I concede it could be a good program - IF IT WORKED. You change stuff in linux conf and then you go edit the text files anyways:P Also the interface for linux conf is so ungodly ugly and awful, I mean if it's interface for changing stuff was anything like mainstream or even logical then maybe my opinion would be different, but as it is I think linux conf bites the big one and it annoyed me when it got installed simply by choosing everthing in the redhat installer. I definately applaud the decision to get rid of that peice of crap.
Now I wouldn't be against a unifed configuration program that worked or made sense but linux conf just sucks ass.
Bah. IE 3 was a complete piece of crap. Serious crap. I gave it a try, tried to download a zip file or something and the fact it pops up a window without any guage of speed, size, or progress made me wonder.. When IE 3 came out and Netscape was still dominent most pages looked like crap in IE. With IE 4 it became somewhat usable, and microsoft has slowly made it bearable to use when it's neccessary, but in my opinion IE 3 was nothing more than a piece of crap but being free it helped bring Netscape off it's pedestal.
As for input devices the older sidewinder gamepads were awesome when you could still daisy chain them all together. The new sidewinders you find at walmart any more just suck though.
Well if windows was modular and you could remove internet explorer, I see no reason you couldn't just stick it back on as well. Besides if hell truly does freeze over and Microsoft makes a modular version of windows then obviously the new versions of programs would consider this in their plans. Noone is forcing your mom or girlfriend to go out and buy the newest "OS" from microsoft and even if they do you can still download the I.E. and media player stuff.
One of the annoying things is you can't get rid of internet explorer even if you hate it and have no programs that use it.
I really dont think a modular WinOS will wreak havok even from an end user standpoint cause frankly software never stops getting made, there is always alternatives. Usually many. Which is what is annoying about buying a Microsoft "OS" even if you HAVE used the same program for 5 years well there is Microsofts new and improved version!! Whatever! And no matter what they say it's not free the price on the o.s. goes up every couple years:P
Why shouldn't microsoft's earnings be rising?
They keep selling the same product for more and
more every couple years. Hey call me old
fashioned but I paid for win 3.1, win 98, win98,
all for less than like $80 I think. Then 2000
came and it was like $120 and god knows what they charging for XP but come on. If it's not more
than simple inflation can account for it certainly is selling upgrades, I mean every time I install win98 it tells me how stable it is and how it is the ultimate operating system:P
Nods, windows has a nasty nasty habit of rewriting the most important section of your hard drive all the time. It's very rude behavior, and windows even overwrites the MBR before it has even finished installing itself, so if you get 3/4 through a windows install and your cd is scratched, well there ya go thank microsoft for making your puter unusable:D Ya it's a nasty practice and very much in the same league as these spyware programs, maybe worse, I mean it's just rude to mess with another man's MBR. If you have a boot disk for linux (very good idea) it's easy to change back to grub or lilo, but then again you shouldn't have to, in general I'd think the less you mess around with your MBR the healthier your PC would remain.
I dont know, I feel like supporting the author but I think the music industry is going crazy. Between cd's getting scratched up, getting stolen, warped, etc. I have bought a ton of cd's 2 or 3 times and the price on cd's just keeps going up even though the price of a plastic cd goes down:P
I completely support supporting the artist (go to concert, buy shirt, recommend to friends) but if they expect me to buy the same cd 5 times for $20 each time the music industry can go %@#$ itself for all I care!
I was kindof thinking along the same lines as you a little earler. I was taking a break from the puter, reading a bood my Robert A. Heinlein named Friday.
I've been trying to figure out what the time setting for the book is, as the author never really gives a definite date to work with, although with the breakup of the U.S. and North America into several new countries, genetic engineering to the point where humans can be designed (one of the major points as in racism), a internet with at least a hundred years under it's belt, and the option of early space colonization I am thinking
that it has to be 100-200 years in the future from now.
Anyways, as a point of history the lead heroine does research into a monopoly of the future, namely "shipstones", basically a very advanced energy battery but esoteric to the point where noone besides the inventor could figure out how to make them and therefore, didn't bother to patent it and make the technique public. Of course people complained about it being a monopoly, but in the same light, it was a cheap and neverending supply of energy for the masses.
I don't know, I guess what it got me thinking about is sure microsoft may have a "monopoly" at this time but, at least we have free alternatives emerging and in even 10-20 years microsoft's and
in fact most of today's operating systems and software will seem antiquated with only god knowing
what kind of stuff people will be using.
With the growing popularity of linux and it's improving every month and the vast amount of software available and the dropping price of computers, I've decided to stop bitching and moaning about microsoft and just enjoy the options available now, while we still live in the stone age:)
I wholeheartedly agree. Yahoo makes me sick the way they shove ads in my face every other time I click on a link now. I dont mind ads, (I mean I advertised for yahoo for 2 years with every email I sent) but they are just going crazy. I really really hope that yahoo.com goes under soon, the way they suck now!

Fat chance of that. The WWW is a horrible place in the first place to look for warez, as 98% of what you find are either broken links, fake links, redirect to 10 pop under windows, link to a top 100 site, or if you happen to be using IE, just a cover for malicious web pages that use IE security holes to fsck you hard drive up good.
"Warez" www sites depend on IE for their sleazy tricks!
Nods, I agree with you, download Mozilla or Opera or links or anything besides IE but for many GOOD reasons;) It's in your best interest just to buy the stuff, unless it's mad overpriced Microsoft crap then just stay the hell away from it in the first place:)
True, but KDE isn't distributed on practically every new computer. It's not spyware either, and intimitely tied to your email program either so you click on the wrong page and some mysterious code pops up your address book and starts spamming all your friends.
My dad gets mad whenever he sees the anti-microstuff and the federal lawsuit cause he honestly doesn't believe anything besides windows exists. He's still running win98 though, so it's better than him running XP.

You can do that by clicking on bookmarks, file bookmark, clicking in the box marked file as group, and choose folder to put it in :)
Apology for lack of logic in last post had a bit too much beer to head hehe.
Lol, too much beer does wonder to one's judgement.

How long do we have to wait till they start offering 3 ghz ???
Holy moly, thanks for the tip. I'd never heard of links before, but I really like the frames-support.
