And about competetion and Free software. Competetion in the closed sourced world is about taking over the competitors market and leaving as little room for him as possible to maximize your proif. In the Free software world coexistence is possible, one thing does not exclude the other. This is the important difference if you ask me, choice. Not that I'm pointing fingers at windows for this using this feature, exchanging ideas is one of the great things about open source, just funny how it often isn't "allowed" to go the other way.

What I meant was that even though it's possible it's anoying that so few modes are defined by default. I have tried defining modes myself, and even found some that worked on my old card, but right now I can't get 320x200, 320x240 & 512x384 to work on my current card. Yes, these are old chunky outdated modes, but I want to use 320x200 for a game I'm making. And even if I get this to work, anyone who want's to play the game as it's supposed to be played would have to mess about with modelines. I think that's unacceptable for someone just wanting to play a game. Again, this is probaly not a big issues these days. But I still think I should be able to access any videomode available like that...*snap*... no that! *snap* *snap*

What I never liked about X is that I can't just open any video mode I like (and the card supports).

For changing depth I have to restart the X server.

Changing resolution dynamically may be possible (though not on my old card Diamond Edge, NV1 chipset, wich I don't get. The documentation said it was a hardware limitation...hmm?) but how come all supported modes aren't added to the XF86Config file by default (on my geforce2 mx anyway). Ok, so that's perhaps not really X's fault, more like the configure tool.

As for the network transparency, useful as it seems to be to many people, does it need to be tied to the video functions?

What I'm trying to say is Linux isn't one thing like windows, linux is (yes, just the kernel I know) a bunch of stuff thrown together and could be made into a system working somewhat like windows. As long as everything is binary compatible everything should be fine, I think.
