    On topic:
M$ would have a better image with the computing public if they just took XP and upgraded it as new releases. Things such as desktop improvements, security rewrites, etc ... But it seems their marketing scheme is to release the newest, greatest beta abortion every 5 years or so. And when it becomes mature, kill it and release another beta OS as the newest latest and greatest.

I've heard it said before, "M$ is not a software company, they are a marketing company." They're all about the money, not producing quality products. This is evident every day when we read about new exploits and the resulting creation of new massive botnets of unpatched windoz machines.

That said, I do have XP on my laptop, and it's the best OS that M$ has ever produced, but I never boot it as Debian Linux or FreeBSD 7.1 does everything XP can do but without the frustration of built in limits of what I can do with my desktop. As a Linux user, I have recently delved into FreeBSD and found the system a pleasant surprise. PC-BSD 7.1 was the actual flavor but FreeBSD none the less. I did find the KDE4.1 too unstable for production work, but a step back in time to PC-BSD 1.5 (FreeBSD 6.4) gave me a system that was somewhat better to tinker with.

Unfortunately, on several occasions I found the system would slow to a crawl and other times would ungracefully crash requiring a hard reboot. And still again for some reason the mouse curser would go berserk and lock itself to the bottom of the screen.

Personally I liked FreeBSD but had to return to my Debian Lenny system to get work done. Eventually, when I have time, I intend to give FreeBSD 7+ another go just because. Although I can see the time needed to get a production desktop system up and running, could take a week or two and I'm not sure the resulting system would be as reliable as my Lenny system.

Rob, I am a contractor. Most posts I have read here, if you follow their advise, will burn your house down or get you or someone else killed. Seek a reputable electrician and talk w/ them for advise. Most will not charge for consultation or a bid.

That said: DIY Generator power 101.
    1. Size a generator for your survival needs.
If your furnace is gas or oil, you need to convert it's amp draw to watts. Watts = Volts * amps. Your furnace will draw ~ 9 amps on start, and run @ ~ 4 amps or less. 9 * 120v = 1080 watts. The furnace is probably the highest energy demanding appliance you need. The fridge is easy, put your frozen stuff outside where critters won't get them. You can store perishable items in a cooler inside and make ice outside for the cooler, or use snow.
    2. When shopping for a generator keep in mind that most generators are labeled by peak watts. Average run watts are usually lower. So size your new generator by run watts. 3500 run watts will do most of what you need. Shop wisely and compare models, but if your whole area is without power, I bet all the stores are already sold out.
If this project is a DIY, then do not attempt to power your house wiring with the generator. You will just end up burning your house down or electrocuting someone. Just run extension cords to the furnace and other locations. If your furnace is hard wired to the house, get an electrician to change it to a cord and plug type disconnect. Then you can run it off a 14 gauge extension cord. Run your lights and laptop off another extension cord.

If you wish to power your whole house via the breaker panel, hire a licensed electrical contractor to do the installation.
    good luck

Although I agree with some points of your post, most of your belief is not quite accurate. LEDs now make the best flash light illumination, and the power drain on batteries is minimal. I've been using LED headlamps for years, so this is nothing new, as your post implies.

The problem with them being used in homes is that they direct their illumination to a specific spot. This is not a bad thing though. I've recently seen them configured as spot lamps. Perfect for recessed lighting.

The optics in LED technology can easily be modified to diffuse light to make a great replacement for CFL & incandescent. Give it time.

Sir, I meant no dis-respect and no insult intended (dry humor), but the reference material your conclusions are based upon do not apply to synthetic biodiesel derived from land fill material. The wikipedia tables you reference note biodiesel derived from vegetable oil and animal fat, not landfill waste such as plastics and rubber from tires.

Wikipedia is an excellent resource for many applications although must also be referenced with due caution as some content may not be truly accurate.

I reference new technology that is currently not included in wikipedia. I have done some investigation into this particular process. If the data provided by the engineers involved is accurate, the end product may provide an equal to higher fuel quality than diesel derived from organic sources and at a cost of ~ $0.50 - $1 /gal US. In addition the environmental pollutant factor of synthetic diesel appears to be much lower than diesel from crude oil.

I do try to look at this technology with skepticism as well, but at some point we must commit ourselves and take a new course from the old standard of leaving our future to neanderthals and their old ideas. This requires new thinking and developing new technologies to move forward.

As with any new viable technology brought forth to the populace for acceptance, there will always be skeptics.
