  1. Re:Gemstone 3 on Loyalists Preserve Past Through Text-Only Games · · Score: 1

GemStone and DragonRealms are 'still' amazing fun! Take a look at Simutronic's latest venture, Hero's Journey, if you haven't already done so. A 3D Elanthia that should hold its own against WoW, EQ, SWG, and the like. I can't wait!

  2. Not dead yet on Loyalists Preserve Past Through Text-Only Games · · Score: 1

Text based games, including MUDs and MUSHs are still alive and strong and have quite a following despite all of the hype and eye candy of modern console/pc games.

I play most of today's MMORPGs and have a lot of fun doing so, but they all are missing a level of immersion that you can only get in a text based game.

My favorite game ever is DragonRealms, a text based world with thousands and thousands of players that has been going strong since the early 90s!

I am glad to see people are still taking an interest in keeping this genre going. I hope some of the younger gamers give text based games a chance and do not miss out completely on these great worlds of fun.

Also, 'cry more noob' comes to mind. I hate that Blizzard is as lenient as they are. I wish the naming regulations were more strict. Even on so called 'RP' servers there is lots of abuse. I would have reported you the moment you ran by me. 'Taco' should have been enough alone to warrant a name change, but not by Blizzard's rules.

A Paranoia MMORPG would probably be a lot of fun, but I fear that much of the humor that made Paranoia great would be lost in a 3D game.

I would personally love to see a text based MUD created for the Paranoia world.

  6. Paranoia still lives!? on Rebuilding Paranoia OSS Style · · Score: 1

I still have great love for this RPG that I haven't touched since the 80's.

I will have to dust off my Paranoia box set and 'get ready for some bootlicking!'

I think we should all just shave our heads and tattoo UPC bar codes up there. Then they can just set up grocery store scanners at every building entrance. When we file in we get the obligatory 'bleep.. bleep...' from the check out isle we all know and love.

"The American Civil Liberties Union has expressed concern that the program violates privacy rights for "third country nationals" who fall under the program." Great.. the ACLU is no longer content with being the 'American Civil Liberties Union' and the 'Defeat Religon Union' and the 'What Morality Union?' ... now they want to be the 'Third Country Nationals Union' too....

also.. Not all MUDs are free. DragonRealms charges monthly fees that rival today's MMORPGs. You can pay $15 for a basic account and up to $50 a month!! for premium accounts that give you access to all sorts of goodies..

  11. Both have merits on Return of Text-Based Games? · · Score: 1

I played Simutronic's text based MUD, DragonRealms, for 8 years and have played most every graphical MMORPG to date since then. I was lured away by the eye candy of the 3D world, but I have never had as rich an experience in any MMORPG that I have had in my MUD days. The communities in MUDs seem much more close. Roleplaying is much more prevalent. Experiences seem much more fulfilling. I find my imagined view of the world I am reading about in a text based game is much more enriched and detailed than what I am 'force fed' in a 3D MMORPG.. It is like comparing a great book to a movie made about the book.. Sure it wonderful to see your favorite world revealed in a movie (LOTR, for an obvious example).. but often people much prefer the details of the written works...

Hero's Journey Video I played Simutronics' DragonRealms for 8+ years and have since played most every major MMORPG to date. DragonRealms still holds the the crown for the best, most immersive, fun game I have ever played. This game has the potential to be the best mmorpg ever. I can't wait to play. If not for their high (too high) monthly charges for their existing games, I would still be playing.

Many quality commerical MUDs require a monthly fee to play. DragonRealms/GemStoneIII http://www.play.net/, for example, costs $15 a month for a standard account (as much as EQ, SWG, WoW, DAoC, ETC.) and $75! a month for a Platinum account, which many people are happy to pay. On top of this is the extensive buying and selling of in game items, money and charcters which sometimes go for hundreds and even thousands of dollars! Simutronics has been going strong since the early/mid 90s.. No other MMORPG has such staying power.
