Sure, we forced/tricked many of those people into updating from an older, acceptable version of Windows. And we're really pleased with all the "telemetry" we're receiving about everything - seriously, everything - everyone is doing on their systems and showing them ads and charging them for Solitaire, etc... (and we will be doing all that even for people that actually purchase their copy of Windows 10). But we won't truly be happy until we've got a *Billlllllion* (as voiced by Car Sagan) systems running Windows 10. That will really increase the delight of our customers - you know, the advertising and marketing folks.

Perhaps law enforcement is hoping for a Minority Report style future where iris scanning and tracking is everywhere and they're trying to get ahead of the curve. And: Fair use

The 1709 Statute of Anne, an act of the Parliament of Great Britain, created copyright law to replace a system of private ordering enforced by the Stationers' Company. The Statute of Anne did not provide for legal unauthorized use of material protected by copyright. In Gyles v Wilcox (1740) the Court of Chancery established the doctrine of "fair abridgement," which permitted unauthorized abridgement of copyrighted works under certain circumstances. Over time, this doctrine evolved into the modern concepts of fair use and fair dealing. Fair use was a common-law doctrine in the U.S. until it was incorporated into the Copyright Act of 1976, 17 U.S.C. 107.

I imagine the conversation I had with the new manager in which he asked if I could put a Fiber Channel card designed for a PC into $200k HP-UX server to "see if it would work" and I replied, "Do you even know how computers work?" probably had something to do with it... Worked part-time for two months, then got a new job at the same salary, didn't have to carry a pager 24/7, then got a raise 2 months later.

I later realized that I had been on-edge because I hadn't been able to contact my friend who lived in NYC and worked next to the WTC. (heard from him a month later; he was okay). In the end, I learned to not let people push my buttons. But, no matter what they say, companies don't care about you; you're disposable.
