For the record, I am not condoning prisoners being mistreated while being investigated, I don't even agree with most of what the Bush administration does.
Maybe my comment was just too vague or unclear. I'm not saying that injustices were not done by the US government. It just seemed like the person I was replying to thought we were going after arabs McCarthy style. If that were true, I'd surely hear about it since I live next to a city with a very high concentration of arab-americans.
But who knows with the current administration. Maybe it is true and I am ill-informed.
Learning a language is easy. Most curriculums just pick one (mostly C++ or Java) and use it to teach you "how to program." The "how to program" part is what is important. Sytnax and features change between languages and technology, but the core fundamentals are the same (ie good coding styles, algorithms, etc).
Like others have said, anyone can sit down and memorize the syntax of a language and program semi-proficiently with it. But when an employer wants a program done in a specific way, or in many cases to run in the fastes way possible, then they want to talk to the CS math geeks to come up with an algorithm.
We all make mistakes, and we as a country (the US) have made mistakes in our history.
We claim to be a free country, but we used to have slavery, we went after commies, we imprisoned innocent japanese after pearl harbor. We made those mistakes and we learned from them. You didn't see our country piling innocent arab-americans into prisons after 9/11??
Yes, the United States is very much free. In short, no, we don't go after commies anymore.
The reason windows is the dominant OS is because they had 100x the marketing. Once they got windows installed on most x86 PC's around the world, complete with their office apps and such, it was easy to remain dominant. Companies would rather patch crappy windows installs than completely overhaul to a knew system like linux or OSX.
Slightly off topic, but Isle Royale is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been to. People go there so they can get away from electronics and other modern things.
I hope that if a device like this ever becomes popular, you don't have people bringing them on backpacking trips into the middle of the woods to power their boom boxes, game boys, etc.
"He could take his cell phone with him, and know it would not die. So if work needed to call, they could. He could take his laptop, so for those insomniac nights he could catch up on work."
Why would anyone want to bring their cell phone or laptop on vacation for the purpose of catching up on work anyway???
Its true. I want to know when RPG became synonymous with orcs/swords/mages/etc. I love the old fashioned Tolkienesqe fantasy, but it is played out in the video game department. When fallout came out, I was very excited and it was a great experience.
The game making process has gone very far away from innovative concepts. It basically goes in this cycle now:
1) New graphical technology comes out 2) Everyone oohs and aahs, and buys up hardware to support it. 3) Every game that came out a year or two ago gets a sequal or rehash using said graphical improvements 4) repeat
Umm... we learned all that stuff about mount and countless other file system topics in my senior level operating systems course in undergrad... While experience is important, books and classroom work/discussions are still very useful.
It is a barrier to entry when the tests cost hundreds of dollars to take. I personally refuse to spend money on these exams because I am doing the college thing. The hard thing is that I go for an interview and they don't care about what degrees I have in computer science or that I am working on a masters degree in the subject. If I'm applying for a java programming position and I am not Java certified, I get shown the door...
The war on terror has now turned to Quake 3 deathmatch!!!!!!!!!!!
I was thinking about joining the army. I mean, its just like fps, but with better graphics. But what if I get lag out there??? I'm dead!!! I heard there isn't even respawn points in RL!" -fps-doug
Yes, I've been going to the afternoon shows for a while now, they're great. The only reason I would see a movie in the theater is if its a show I'm really excited about and don't want to wait to dvd. I have better things to do in the evening than sit in some crowded overpriced theater.
There are also movie theaters around where I live that are "adults oriented" where they serve alcohol and the ticket prices are relatively cheap. I have never experienced a cell phone or thrown food probably due to the maturity level of the audience (you have to be 21 to enter).
My dad always warns me about letting the smoke out of my components... The factory packs that smoke in the chips nice and tight, and it won't work anymore if you let it all out!
Mmmmm.... Kesslers...... 100% guaranteed to give you gut rot :)
And everyone be drinkin' some grog on International Talk Like a Pirate Day

Boones Farm... Fuel for snow statue building for any MTU people out there.......

My spelling is crappy because I was at work and I hadn't had a single drop of anything with caffeine in it yet....
Just buy a scanner that can run Linux...
Oh, wait...
Its called marketing!!

Its getting very boring.
Whats up with all the Gandhi stuff lately?? Has /. finally outsourced commenting on articles to India???
I, for one, welcome our new Flying Spaghetti overlords.
"...and what can be done to prevent and/or lessen such disasters in the future?"
Um... stop living in a coastal town that is below sea level and is prone to hurricanes???? But thats just me....

Of course they're doing it for the free publicity. They now have 1000's of /.ers searching perfect 10's site for pr0n...
/.
I'm sure perfect 10's IT crew knows that if they get into a story involving google, it will eventually end up on
