I just switched from fedora to ubuntu. Fedora seems to be declining in stability and usability. My original logic for using fedora was that it was redhat like and a lot of my customers would be using redhat or centos.

I never really got my moneys worth out of redhat support either. it would take days for them to respond to an email and by then I would have solved or worked around the issue. So besides having another supported product like oracle or tivoli to run on it there is not much point to wasting the money and using a commercial distro.

  3. Re:My personal experience with my IT staff on The Disconnect Between Management and the Value of IT · · Score: 1

For every 1 user that is responsible with work resources there are 5 that will do boneheaded things and break something. Then when you want to reimage their computer to fix it they scream and yell that IT is unable to keep their computer working. Those 5 complain to their bosses and so the complaint count is always greater than the happy count. In all likelyhood the 1 person that knows what they are doing also knows that the other 5 are idiots and its pointless to try and argue with them.

I am being generous with the 1 in 5 btw. I suspect the gap is much greater.

This also explains why calling the helpdesk or customer service results in little getting done. The ratio of lunkheads to competent people is the same in all fields. Not that I am cynical or anything just my experience.

I had a dual proc g5 tower that never really worked quite right and would lock up now and then. We bought 3 of them at once and the other 2 never had a problem. It took close to 8 months to get the problem solved and in the meantime I had to go out and buy another one as having people try to do work on a flaky machine is pretty hard to do.

They pretty much replaced everything by the time they were done with it. One of the last techs just happened to have a new verision of the diagnostic disks that identified a bad cpu or something. After that the machine was flawless.

But 8 months of back and forth with the local store not being able to find the problem and apple saying there is nothing wrong with it was pretty annoying. Something like that with dell would have take a couple of trips best case before they just replaced it.

For what an apple costs compared to a PC they should be more responsive.

I spent less than a week working with it and stripped out a lot of the stuff that is more bug related and ended up with a workable ticket system. I added a custom field for needed by date and another for end date for temporary requests.
