  1. Currently battling this problem on Pure Play Maintenance Costs Consuming IT Budgets? · · Score: 1

I work for a medium sized non-technological global company in an Analyst Programmer/Systems Analyst position. At present we're re-doing the websites which should be completely re-written. Unfortunately we are sticking with this "polish the turd hard enough and you've got gold" philosophy.

The problem is because IT development is seen as needless expense (besides the fact that it holds the company together). We are the "plumbers" of the company, just fixing the "internets tubes" and computers which "dump stuff on to them, like a truck".

Because of this devalued position within the company, a lot of usual IT jobs (such as website design) is handled by Marketing, who have no idea about website development and give us these seemingly impossible pages to create, which aren't intuitive, and come up with "brillant" (see http://thedailywtf.com/forums/40043/ShowPost.aspxP aula's Birllant Bean) idea's like an entirely Flash Website with movies and graphics (Our primary task is a online store).

Then I read about Google, getting their programmers to spend 20% of their time creating something they want, and looking for innovative people. Perhaps this is only in companies which are technology based companies, or at least understand what technology can do and how best to use it.

All righty then... time to clam down...

I for one welcome our new Marketing overlord's.

    We're 30,000 light-years from galactic central point,
we go round every 200 million years,
And our galaxy is only one of millions of billions
in this amazing and expanding universe.
The universe itself keeps on expanding and expanding,
in all of the directions it can whizz,

When I had a math's problem in Uni or High School, if I went to the math's lecturers I'd have no idea in no time flat, and the problem with the culture in some of those subjects, it isn't cool to not know the answers, so I'd either be forced to figure it out my self, or I'd go to the people who were good at teaching me math's, the Physics and CS lecturers.

In High School my Physics teacher was continually picking up the slack that my math's teacher wasn't, I think it was also due to him being a very visual teacher and I was a very good visual learner, and he was also good at programming, he wrote the schools timetable/student management software.

If you've studied programming and have a deep interest in economics/business then you might be better for this position. A lot of programmers go this way. They get into programming initially, until they learn they want more. You seem reasonably entrepreneurial, so you might fit this build. Generally these people have an MBTI type of ENTJ. Where is real programmers and science types are usually INTJ. But this doesn't mean you can't be out of the norm and not work well.

Do the Jung Typology Test and find out more about yourself at Portrait of an ENTJ and here The Portrait of the FieldMarshal Rational

Overall for a business you need to know more about business/economics (and maybe some politics for fun?), not finance, not technology. Whom ever has the best skill set and want for this, should have the position.

If you have left it to asking for people on /. for whether or not, perhaps you don't want it that much, or don't have the forcefulness for that kind of position.

Although remember what happened with Paul Allen and always stay firm with what's in your best needs! After all that's what business is, interacting entities all striving for what's best for them, and coming to a medium.
