  1. Value of Malware on Apple's Developer Tools Turnaround 'Great News' For Adobe · · Score: 1

Apparently you have underestimated the value of malware. $99 is a drop in the bucket compared to the amount of money they could make from it.

Looking at the FP's link with a bit more information, it sounds to me like Best Buy's PR woman was hinting at an appropriate solution. Better OS, sure. Better phone? Ehh, I don't know about that.

I just picked up a Palm Pre a couple weeks ago, yeah I was late to the show. The OS is really (really) nice. I prefer it over the iPhone and I think it blows Android out of the water. But the hardware isn't great and the form factor is rather bad. The phone takes 3-4 minutes to boot and must be rebooted fairly frequently. The only way to turn on your screen is to press an awkwardly placed button on the corner, even harder to get to when you have the slider open. The web browser works far better than I ever expected for any phone, but it's limited by the relatively low screen resolution. The CPU is not fast enough (but are they ever?) and causes awkward delays when trying to answer phone calls.

I held out on buying a Pre for so long because I wanted to see a taller, slimmer, faster and perhaps touch-only model of the phone. Now I know it's what they needed. Instead, they waited a year to dish out AT&T and Verizon re-hashes of the same old stuff. I wish they were purchased by someone better than HP, but if they ever release a WebOS-based tablet I will definitely be interested.

  14. Six Foot Drop!? on Apple To Hold iPhone 4 Press Conference · · Score: 4, Funny

From what I've seen so far, the device cannot withstand a simple 6ft drop test onto a concrete floor.

Six feet!? That's quite a drop!

To be clear, we're not talking about throwing it onto the floor here, but if it slips out of your pockets and bounces on the floor then there is a (not unrealistic) expectation that it'll survive - especially when you've paid several hundred UK pounds on a phone and tied yourself into an 18 month contract.

Oooh, you're British. Now everything makes sense, I just forgot to convert feet to.. wait, what?

I see the same audio / video problems happening all over multiple channels on Time Warner in my neck of the state, much closer to Cincinnati. I think something about the switch to digital has introduced all sorts of new potential problems and most providers lack the capacity to quickly identify and troubleshoot problems as they occur. I had a similar experience trying to watch a movie this weekend, cursing at TW the entire time.

I'd also prefer to get an Android on my 5+ year old (that is, "cheap") Sprint plan as well. I've got my eye out on the Samsung Galaxy S now, since the HTV Evo would cost me a mean $25 more per month.

  23. So Sad Over No CDMA on Google Stops Selling Its Own Phone · · Score: 1

There are no GSM carriers who offer 3G access in my corner of the state, but both Verizon and Sprint work just fine. It's too bad the Nexus One never came out for CDMA networks because I've been wanting one for the last six months. Of course, the reason I want one so bad is important to the situation: my coworker happens to have one, so I've got to hold it in my hands and see exactly how sweet it is for myself. Had I never actually got to use one, I would have never ventured $500 on Google's word: "Trust us, it's sweet."

  24. PO'ed Long Time Customer on Sprint's $199 HTC EVO 4G Gets Release Date of June 4 · · Score: 1

I have a five year old Sprint plan that they are surely trying to kill off. Instead of paying $55 like I currently do for talk + unlimited text and data, they want me to pay $80 / mo to own the first decent phone Sprint has released since the Pre. For the same exact plan.

No wonder they nixed the Nexus One - if I could buy the phone to own it outright, then how else could they force an additional $25 / month into my plan?

TMobile, please bring 3G to my area!

  25. Just Ordered A LifeCam Cinema on Consumer Webcams With High-Quality Sensors? · · Score: 4, Informative

After scouring the web for reviews I ordered the Microsoft LifeCam Cinema this morning for $50 from Amazon. It shoots (widescreen) 720p high definition video, is manufactured with all-glass lenses and performs great in low light situations. I was wary of buying a Microsoft product, but the camera is UVC and works out-of-the-box with Linux. Can't wait to get it.
