I don't think it would be much of a fair fight though. Now Jobs is a bit bigger than Gates but I think I could still take him. Now Jobs versus Gates in the ring would also be serious window breaking experince. What about gates versus someone like Steve Urckel or Screech?? Didn't Urckel know karate? so I'd have to go with Urckel on that one...but Screech hmmm that would be an intresting "brawl"! PLACE YOUR BETS!

  3. Always Pointing Fingers? on ATI Claims HDCP Then Covers Its Tracks · · Score: 0

First of all! if you go to ATI's Site you will see that ATI still has the line of text saying "DVI 1.0 compliant / HDMI interoperable and HDCP ready"

Although this is a little misleading it is all together true! The actual ATI GPU can support HDCP. There is just nothing there to decrypt the signal and send the demodulated signal to the GPU. Now, nVidia is just as guilty at misleading its customers! Just because nVidia sells their reference design and doesn't manufactor their boards like ATI does doesn't get them off the hook.

The issue comes with an HDCP tuner with OOB capabilities. OOB stands for Out Of Bandwidth. The OOB signal is the encryption signal sent along with the HDCP signal and tells the processor how to decode the encrypted signal. Now the issue is this technology is still new and it takes time to develop. Slandering one company for something all the other graphics companies do is absurd!

HDCP = EVIL anyway! The only thing that is going to change in the end is that the content provider is going to win out. How does the consumer benefit from HDCP? By having to pay for HDCP content? We have had the companies knocked on their asses back in the days of Kazaa and free MP3s... Now with bittorrent we have a nice push of the shoulder but bittorrent with encryption will be a nice kick in the nuts! There needs to be a way people can have a secure P2P with out worrying about the man looking over their shoulder! I say we don't need no stinking HDCP :P

  7. Ars' Bad Benchmarks on Ars Technica Reviews Intel iMacs · · Score: 0

I would just like to point out that the actual Benchmark's used in the Ars technia are slanted. When you try to benchmark test an Intel chip vs an AMD chip you attempt to build two identical systems with only the chip as the different factor. This is not what Ars did.

When you look at the Specs on the iMac G5 and the iMac Duo you notice right away that the Duo has half the memory. Granted the Duo's memory is faster but that is one of the advantages of using the Duo chip!

He also states that "I ran Xbench using Rosetta"... Am I the only one who sees anything wrong with this?? Rosetta is a program that runs in the background making it possible for your current applications to be run on the Duo chip. To have an ACCURATE benchmark test one would have to wait for software developers to release COMPATIBLE versions of their software not something that has to be run by rosetta.

  10. Generation Labels on The MySpace Generation · · Score: 0

It seems to me that the labeling of a generation has become very uncreative and is occurring much too frequently. The only appropriate generation label I can think of dates back to the baby boomers when after the troops returned from World War 2 there was a huge jump in the number of babies.

The next generation became labeled as generation X. Now according to wikipedia Generation List this is the generation I fall into, being born in 1979. The very name generation X gives a feeling of anonymity and utter lack of creativity. However I have not read Douglas Coupland's 1991 novel Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture.

The next generation label is Generation Y and is defined as people born in 1982 to 1991. After that there is generation Z and is given the age constraints of 2000+. Does anyone else see a trend of shortening generation gaps and lack of creativity and definition!

I assume the article naming the next generation as generation @ would be renaming the current generation Y. I am all for this because it gives a much clearer distinction and description of what this upcoming generation is! I would also like to propose shortening the age length of generation X and the baby boomer generation as well.

This is how I perceive the break down of generations
    Baby Boomers 1943-1957
    Generation X 1958-1973
    Generation @ 1974-1998
Name Yet to be Defined 1999-?

I feel this would be a much more accurate depiction of the generation gaps and differences that occur. I also feel that it is unacceptable to label a generation when they are still pre-teen! Your teen years are the years you start to come into yourself and realize who you are.

Now to specifically focus on generation @ you must realize that myspace is not a phenomenon! There is also freindster and even before that findapix which was around before any of the current sites way back in 1999! With that said yes the computer is a ground breaking achievement of our time and the Internet has brought everyone together but alas we are still in the OIL age we have been since the invention of the car. Its time to change CHANGE CHANGE

The lack of change for a hundred years can directly be laid to blame on the current young generation. Look at our apatheiticness to the current political situation! Have we learned nothing from the radicals actions of our parents generation?? But I won't get into all that.

Though, these are the things that define a generation and are a result of their label. So I am going to actually take action for my generation and throw that horrible term Generation Y away! Join with me and cast off your shackles of oppression!

--------- I guess its appropriate to post my myspace O.o my mypsace PS I am an atrocious speller so please don't mind the mistakes!

  13. Re:Quality Repairs on Fix Your Crashing X-Box 360 With String · · Score: 0

There are actually many different types of Electrical Engineers. The type which are you refering to which is required to pass an exam and stamp off designs are the Power Engineers. Engineers who deal with electricity in the sense it is coming from the grid. When I received my education as an Electrical Engineer I was required to study all types of Engineering in my undergrad lower division (of course more we focused mostly on Electrical). Then in the upper division courses I was required to focus more on a certain area to my choosing, I went with wireless technology and DSP. Now comparing the licesing of an Attoreny to an Engineer is a tough thing to do. It makes sense when the designs of the Engineer are possibly going to jepordize the welfare of society society and not just the end user or purchaser ie buildings, power grids, cars etc. But when the Engineer is designing something that has realtively low risk factor (and therefore low legal ramificaitons) the free market tends to take over and be the governing factor. The populace wouldn't all be buying Ipods if they exploded everytime they were turned on. Now the most absurd part of having to go through the process of being a professional engineer is that you are required to have several other engineers support your claim. There is no similar special contingencey for lawyers or doctors, and it propogates this air of buddy buddyness. Now that that is all out of the way... Let me say this about the article: The author says the power supply is over heating. The power supply in this case meaning the external transformer that converts 120v AC to 12v DC. Now these 12volt transformers are pretty standard run of the mill stuff so I am wondering if maybe this one has higher amperage than normal? The whole thing really sounds absurd. How is keeping it suspended going to help cool it? Then he goes on to claim that taking the case off the power supply would help. I'm sorry but you are just asking for a fat shock if you take the case off your power supply. Let's reason this out even further what would happen if a 12volt power supply over heated. Would you XBOX 360 crash? Yes if the 12volt power supply popped a fuse or melted. Would you be able to turn the 360 back on? no because your power supply would be broken. So unless you have a power supply that has a reset button on it and you have to keep pushing it, then over heating is not the issue. I swear people - believe only half of what you see and none of what you hear! (especially if its on slash dot and there isn't a "how to" guide attached with it)

Don't believe everything you read on slashdot. This post sounds much more like a advertisement for iSuppli then anything else! I work in selling parts some of which are actually in the XBOX and I can tell you right now it is impossible to get pricing unless you work at Microsoft or you were able to get your parts on the XBOX Build Of Material (BOM). Very few people actually know all the prices for every component on the BOM! The absurdity doesn't stop there, how do we know what quantity iSuppli bases its pricing on? For example, if I am just going to buy one piece of component X it could cost up to 2 dollars! But if I am going to buy 10,000 pieces a month maybe I could get the price down to 1.25.. now if I was going to buy something on the order of 1 million a month the price would bottom out around 10 cents give or take a few cents depending, cost of materials, how new the technology is etc. Looking at the parts that are specific to the XBOX 360 namely the GPU and CPU how can iSuppli claim to know the exact dollar cost of these componets when they are specifically custom designed for MSN! The only way they could know is if they had insiders in IBM/ATI or MSN!! Which is down right absurd because people could lose their job over such a leak. Granted they could have an insider at one of the ODMS but this whole notion is far fetched!
