  2. Re:the welfare state is at fault on The Internet's Network Efficiencies Are Destroying the Middle Class · · Score: 1

I don't think the GP was proposing a welfare state, I think he was pointing out that it is somewhat inevitable. You're right, if this were a rational society then things could be different, but it's not a rational society. Especially in the US, it is very individualistic society where we are strongly encouraged to worry about ourselves and not about others. Unfortunately the kinds of problems we are talking about are far more difficult to solve on an individual basis than a collective basis.

I've said similar before -- the same goes for their data mining techniques. Sure it's being used inappropriately, but the fact they are able to collect, store, and analyze such an humongous data set is really a marvel of computer science.

Remember, rockets were used to kill people before they were used to take people to space. Lots of inventions are created for the wrong purpose and then later used for good.

I used that video in a report about the potential of WW3 as Nostradamus predicted when I was in high school, I think this was in 1997 or 1998. Was Nostradamus right? Did Westwood Studios predict the future? Was I a prophet of the future of the US? Nah. Just had an imagination.

Only if you believe that creative works are owned by their creators rather than become part of the culture once published and thus owned by everyone in society. If you believe the later, than any creative work lost to DRM is a loss to all of us.

I'm not sure where you're from, but I can speak for the US. We tend to be a fairly individualistic nation (still) and the idea of something being part of the culture as you mentioned is a real hard sell here.

one of many extremely poor choices by the court in the Bush years(they didn't stop with bad decisions when Obama arrived, not saying that).

I'm glad some people recognize that this isn't anything new. When the Patriot Act passed, many of us saw this coming but it seems like all the outcry now is just too late. It was obvious that the gov't would data mine the entire population to accomplish their goal, and it was obvious that the data they were collecting and mining would end up getting misused by people all over the chain of command. Lo and behold, that is exactly what is happening.

This does need to go to the supreme court, and hopefully the court will see reason. I'm not sure what I expect to happen, though, since (as you mentioned) both parties have shown that this kind of surveillance is something they support.

Engines may be the noisiest thing on the plane, but that noise is white noise (static noise). It is actually calming and contributes to actually helping people sleep on the plane. Voices, on the other hand, cut right through that and have the opposite effect, even if they aren't addressing you. Also, voices carry VERY well through the cabin. For example, you can often hear what the flight attendant is saying to someone ten or more rows ahead or behind you, even over the engine noise.
