This is true, however he speaks nothing of globalization in his question.

And, is anybody actually doing this? I would not consider running an entire offshore call center over VoIP. The cost of a dedicated network circuit would surely offset the cost of telco communications.

  10. You should probably think things over. on Cheap and Reliable IP Telephony? · · Score: 5, Insightful

The only corporations that would actually stand for a gain from the benefits of IP phones are the ones that would not balk at the price of the hardware.
The largest sum of money spent on phone systems is usually interoffice calls. Why would you set up IP phones in a single location as your goal, then add more offices as a secondary "good to have?"
This is not sound economics -- just because speaking over your cat5 network is cool does not make it a smart thing to do.

  11. Re:Ouch! on Neal Stephenson's The Confusion Released · · Score: 1

    Stephenson doesn't like it either:
    >Neal, what is your opinion of your first novel, The Big U?

The fact that virtually all of the first edition ended up getting pulped created an unnatural scarcity of the printed book, which is only now being alleviated by a new edition from HarperCollins. This scarcity caused the price of the first edition to become ridiculously high, and led to bootleg editions being posted on the Web. If the book were judged on its own intrinisic merits, it would not attract such a high price or engender such curiosity. The Big U is what it is: a first novel written in a hurry by a young man a long time ago.

I've worked with soldiers, airmen, sailors, and marines for my entire professional life, and many retired military who served in Vietnam. Almost all of them actually served in battle, and can vouch for where they were during that year. Maybe they were war criminals. But I am *sure* you weren't. That's what I think, after all.
