Scotland - we're possibly the most welcoming country in the world. There's a hell of a lot less racism here than in England (as far as you can tell by the news anyway) and there's a lot of open space for people to enjoy if they're looking for that sort of thing.
If you're desperate to buy a console right now, I'd say go for the 360. Whether that would change 12 months down the line I don't know, but I certainly don't see MS suddenly falling away in this generation due to the long headstart they'd had over Sony and the large consumer base they've built up for the 360.
we sold about 26 machines at our midnight launch this morning. That was only about a third of our pre-orders, and Sony got us 120 machines for day one. I know everyone's heralding the death of Sony's gaming division these days, but they've done a fantastic job with getting stock out there to stores (admittedly they've had months to put this in motion). I won't be buying one myself but I think Sony are starting to turn their fortunes around.
Just as long as they don't let any of their execs do anymore interviews.
Sources? Sadly not. My excuse is I read many games news websites every day and can't be expected to remember them all - really I just have a bad memory for where I read things.
Other games, not sure as I implied - however I know that l33t hax0rs checked out the Resistance: Fall of Man Blu-Ray and it was full of empty "padding" data to fill the disc, as well as everything being on the disc twice (I believe). Apparently the only reason it needed to be on a Blu-Ray over an DVD was that the textures are all uncompressed, but apparently this would still have fitted on an HD-DVD. Of course, since MS have said they won't be using HD-DVDs for games this generation that's a kind of moot point.
I just find the double-data Oblivion thing really funny, to be honest. As an aside, I just got home from working the PS3 midnight launch at my store, go Europe and getting things a little bit late!
Haha Timelords, that's awesome. As a Browncoat, I understand the need for a cool nickname for a fanbase. Thanks for enlightening me about a couple of things:)
No complaints with what you've said. To get even a cross-platform "proper" Final Fantasy game for the 360 would be a massive boon for MS. Especially since (if I even had a PS3 or was thinking about getting one) I'd rather have the game for the 360. Achievements may not be much, but I can't see a PS3 version having anything over a 360 one. Perhaps more FMVs/music from using the Blu-Ray disc, but we all know the access speeds on them are horrendous so they'd just put all the data on the disc twice like they've done with Oblivion (and others?) - so in the end I expect both systems would get the same game.
Actually, it's called the "First/Second/Third Series" over here in the UK too. I *think* they can "get away with this"(obviously there's no laws about this sort of thing) because the new show is called Doctor Who and the original was called Dr. Who. I could be wrong though, I'm not a big fan (though I loved the new first series and really want to watch the 2nd one) so I'm sure a proper Whovian (sp?) knows the answer.
Thanks for being the voice of reason and fact. I certainly hope you didn't post anonymously because you feared a karma backlash from idiots though. I'll assume you just don't have a/. account:)
To be fair, you're comparing the "full system" PS3 price to the Core 360 price. The full system 360 is £279.99. I do realise that since we're not getting the 20Gb PS3 model over here right away this is a bit of a moot point though. Although I loathe the core 360 system with my very soul, my mum got my brother one for his birthday and since he won't be going online with it it's perfect for him.
I.....if that's sarcasm then fair enough, don't really see it as that funny but we all have different senses of humour. If not...I think you need to improve your general knowledge.
Since I still have a sealed 2100 points card that I bought weeks ago, consider your advice taken, sir - I'll at the very least try the demo (I LOVE that all the XBLA games have trials, unlike the Wii's Virtual Console). It's nice that MS (and other devs) take the time to at least not just emulate the original game and add Achievements, scoreboards etc.
Alien Hominid will be my first XBLA purchase since getting my 360 about 5 weeks ago. My flatmate bought Geometry Wars, which is very good, but I can see myself downloading a lot more games through the service in the coming weeks and months. C:SotN, Castle Crashers (the new 4-player co-op game by the Alien Hominid team), Worms HD (Worms + Xbox Live = instant fun).
I heard even one of the original TMNT games is coming the Arcade, which I may well pick up for a fair price.
Firstly, I do kinda agree with your point. I work in a games store and even though we tell people when we sell them a 360, "keep it well ventilated, don't move it around while it's turned on, etc", they still do it and act all indignant when their machine breaks down. However, we get a lot of faulties that can't be explained by simple idiot gamers, for example from regulars to the store who we know full well treat their games and consoles better than their friends and family. Personally my 360 is functioning fine, but I feel lucky which shows how common faults are, certainly with the early machines.
"The first stopped playing DVDs after 6 months, strangely enough CDs were just fine(both music and games)."
The PS2 has two lasers, one for DVDs and one for CDs. This is why when many PS2s "break" they continue to play one type of disc. Where I work we get a lot of people asking "oh, is that game on a blue disc? Because my PS2 doesn't play them for some reason". Blue disc = Playstation CD game, silver disc = Playstation DVD game.
For what it's worth, the specialist games store chain that I work for here in the UK is getting almost double the number of PS3 units as we got Wii for its launch. I seriously think my store might have PS3s on the shelf on Day One.
Not a fanboy at all, but I picked up a 360 a few weeks back (I work in a games store) and am loving it. Sadly I don't have much time to play it since my degree course just got really busy, but Xbox Live is far and away the most fun I've had online with a small group of people (I don't play WoW anymore, I chose social life). I've been a PC gamer all my life but MS have really crafted a fun experience and I love the way they've integrated it into the whole machine. Nintendo's online strategy has left me very disappointed so far, like yourself I love the Wii but since the good single-player games are basically Zelda and nothing else right now (at least here in eXiteTruck/Trauma Center/Elebits forsaken Europe), my Wii doesn't get much playtime unless I have friends round.
Don't blame you for holding out for a price drop though, I'm sure it's coming pretty soon - we're expecting it around or just after the European PS3 launch at the end of March. There's also rumours of an improved version of the console with a bigger HDD, might be worth waiting for that if you think you'll need it (possibly HDMI too).
The Sony fanboys who argue that the Playstation Network (which I have not even seen demo'd, so it might be great for all I really know) is superior to Live because it's free are about to get a big kick in the teeth - probably in a few months from what I've heard.
For a long time I thought, "why would people want to pay for 'casual' games that they can play for free on the 'net?". Then I played Geometry Wars on the 360, and later Zoo Keeper on the DS and now believe that even if a "casual" game is simple and easy to play it can still be a big hit with console and PC gamers. As long as the price is kept fair (Zoo Keeper I picked up pre-owned at a much reduced price from my workplace, so I didn't pay the same as a fullprice DS title) then casual games certainly have a place in modern gaming. Castle Crashers, an XBLA game (with 4-player co-op!) from the team who made Alien Hominid will likely be my next "casual" game purchase, and I'm considering picking up Lumines Live! for the occasional 30-minute break from work.
With EA's profits falling - blamed on the high cost of "next-gen" development - I think PopCap stand to really benefit from raising their game and bringing new gamers into the fold.
Dunno if you know but the makers of Alien Hominid are working on a new 4-player co-op game for Xbox Live Arcade called...Castle Crashers (I think). It looks very cool and I expect I'll be picking it up when it hits.
I didn't say I'd never gone over the speed limit, but I'd say that on an hour's drive I'd probably spend at max 2 minutes over the limit - from as you said natural variations in the environment.
You have a difference of opinion from me, doesn't mean you need to accuse me of being a hypocrite.

Who modded this troll???
Someone who's never seen the sketch, I guess. Or someone with no sense of humour. And ruthless efficiency.
I wish I had mod points, for you made me laugh.
I'm impressed at how much effort you put into that sarky reply. Hats off to you, sir :)

Hadn't thought of that, seems pretty plausible. A thank you, sir, for expanding my knowledge on a topic I get paid to know about :-D
