Yes, you are correct. The Windows users are mostly web designers.
I have heard horror stories from print shops who get word docs that people want on the 4 color press....
This also happens offline. There was a story about 4 months ago in the CLeveland Plain Dealer (The archives aren't free from that far back, so no link) about a woman who was talked into investing in 4 houses in Cleveland. She bought 4 houses, no money down, using her decent credit, sight unseen. I think she paid (well, owes) about 200K for the 4 houses. Turns out the houses were worth about 40K total for all 4. I don't know what came of it- I think they were trying to go after the guy who talked her into it as well as the lenders.
Caveat Emptor. Could you imagine going 200K into debt for properties you have never seen?
Also, if I remember right, this woman didn't have much income. So it begs the question, how are people able to finamce these purchases? (I don't mean how does it work- I understand the financing- I mean, how can the system be set up to allow this?)
Thats an interesting point, even if it was sarcastic. I was an Apple guy until you could get Photoshop for Windows. ( I don't want to get into why, despite owning Apples since I was 10, I switched to PC- But it had a lot to do with PC games)
It used to be that you pretty much had to have an Apple to do high end graphics. Now I know a ton of graphic designers who use Windows machines. That was unheard of when I was younger.
Hmm- what is funny is that MS has to fight the same kind of thing that keeps Windows entrenched. It is commonly argued that people stick with windows because it is what they know and what they are used to (I know I am overlooking the fact that it is included with almost every PC sold).
Now MS is on the other end- I use Photoshop almost daily. I have to be honest- even if there was a program twice as good (however you measure twice as good) I would be hard pressed to give up a program I have used for a decade (Photoshop) and am used to. Even when I use Fireworks, I have some trouble, because the commands are different/located in different places...
I agree with your point- especialy because, due to the fact that I am anal about money, I have a very high credit score.
What really, really bothers me is that I have to pay to see my credit score. I have to pay for information that is floating around about me.(For those of you who haven't checked it out, the free credit report you get every year does not include your score). And what really irritates me, are those ads that say that for only $19.95 per month, the credit bureau will monitor your score and let you know if they make a mistake!!!
It gives me a great business idea for programmers- For only 19.95 per month, we will let you know when we make an error writing code!
Something that bothers me:
Social security numbers being used for ID. I thought it was, when social security was enacted, against the law for social security numbers to be used for anything else besides social security.
I also hate that companies make many millions selling info about me- credit bureaus and such. And then the credit bureaus want to sell me a service to watch for errors they may make. I would like info about me to be private, unless I choose to disclose it.
What a joke. I just feel like sometimes we double dead bolt the front door and install a state of the art security system on the front door, and leave the back door wide open....
Um- thats what I said. Violating policy can be a tort. violating laws can be a crime. Do you understand the differnce between civil and criminal law? Do you understand how this applies to the issue of deleteing files? Quoting texas statutes has nothing to do with anyting.
Is it a law or a company policy issue? If it is a company policy issue, then maybe it was a tort. It is sort of like, parking in a handicapped spot is a crime, and violates the law. Parking in "stork" parking (those spots reserved for new mothers and preggos) is a violation of a policy.
Call me a conspiratorialist- But I think that things like the "accidental" release of the slides showing the planned online hard drive backup thing, are planned.
And another thing- They may or may not be a great company- I am not here to argue that, but they are made up of people- and as such, mistakes will be made.
The real question is, is it hubris to think that google can do what it wants, instead of what wal street wants, and still stay so valuable (on paper)?
I don't disagree, but I would point out the fact that that In Brazil nearly three-quarters of new cars can burn either ethanol or gasoline, whichever happens to be available. money.cnn.com/2006/01/24/news/economy/biofuel_fort une_020606/
My diesel truck will run on many differnt biofuels.
In fact, a large percent of cars sold in the US are flex fuel....
I agree with you re: opensource, however consider this analogy:
It would be great to get off gasoline- But if gasoline were suddenly unavailable, despite the fact that we could grow corn and use ethanol or walk or whatever (the replacement isn't the issue), the unplanned switchover would be very painful....
Jeesh...- when did Diebold become like Microsoft on slashdot. Any post that doesn't follow the miscosoft is bad or "Diebold is hatching a plot take over the world" gets modded down.... That is beyond immature.
I feel bad for whomever modded that post down- Groupthink is a terrible thing...
Is there no room for tampering with paper ballots? Have you ever taken a fillin the bubble test?
What about the SAT being all screwed up? http://www.cnn.com/2006/EDUCATION/03/10/sat.scorin g.mistake.ap/index.html?section=cnn_latest
Rain blamed for SAT scoring error
(AP) -- Blame it on the rain. The company that scans the answer sheets for the SAT college entrance exam said Thursday that wet weather may have damaged 4,000 tests that were given the wrong scores.
Maybe it is because I live in Ohio, and am tired of Diebold being a whipping boy- but seriously- Is there a bigger potential for fraud with an electronic machine? There has always been bvote fraud, since long before the advent of electronic voting.... With a punch card I get no reciept, I just hope that after I put it in the box, it ends up being counted....
Whomever creates the service that aloows people to watch the downloads easily from the couch, in the living rrom. There is only so long I can watch movies/shows on my computer screen or my little 2 inch iPod screen...
Also- you would need multiple ebook readers to duplicate the way I read. I have a book in my briefcase to read drunning lunch, a book by my bed to read at night, and a book in the crapped to read while I pinch a loaf. To use an ebook, I would have to carry my reader from the bathroom, to the bed etc....

Most leased office space is as you describe. Most of the inner walls are more or less temporary. When you agree to sign a multo year lease, they will move walls around for you. That is why many leased office spaces are so crappy. The walls are quickly thrown together dry wall, with doors etc....
While I agree with you,
keep in mid that every credit card bill that arrives at my home has the credit card number on it. I shred these, but many people simply throw them out.
Also, my point about the bar- there was no way, at the bar I worked at, and every bar I have ever worked in, for the customer to watch the bartender swipe the card. Also, not to be an ass, but who is going to follow a waiter, waitress to the bussing station to watch them handle the card?
Um, anytime I buy something "questionable" or from a questionable source, I use a one time credit card number. I know MBNA has this. You set a dollar amount for the number, as well an expiry date. It is great for sites with auto renewing subscriptions. I use them all the time for 3 day 1.99 trials. I set the card limit at 2.50, use the number, and then forget about it. When they try and charge me, they get nothing but an expired card.
My understanding is that most identity theft is still done the old fashion way- with garbage diving etc. When I was in college, I bartended. I could have easily written down every credit card number that was handed to me....
But clearly this is more of a privacy issue. Even if nothing is stolen from me, I would prefer that my name not be associated with porn purchases. But then again, who am I kidding, everyone that meets me just assumes I am into porn. I guess it is my vibe.
Those of us who are older, and have families and houses etc. know that we have to keep working, if at all possible, to keep the bills paid. I woudln't want my family to have to have one of those cans you see on gas station counters that say "help the such and such family." If you stop working, you accumulate huge debt, that maybe your life insurance doesn't cover. When you get older, you will realize life isn't about what you want to do.
Yes it would be nice if you could sit around for 6 months. But it is selfish.
Information in politics and government has always evolved. It would be interesting to study the parallels between the internet and the pamphlets of the revolutionary period.
Any trends may best be viewed in hindsight however, as the way information is distributed changes so rapidly.
The Kos community has a "reputation," and some would suspect that any printed material associated with the site would parallel what is said there
Yes, they do. But I know of no news or opinion service that doesn't have a reputation. Many don't trust Fox because they are to the right. Many don't trust the NY Times because they are to the left.
Whatever we write, no matter how much we try to be 100% objective, will be subjective due to our own experiences, culture etc.
That being said- Kos is not someone I always agree with- but he does show that many Democrats are not liberal hollywood weenies. Many Dems (like my grandfather and Kos) are Vets. I don't consider myslelf Dem or Republican, but thats another story....

If you want to know about how to live "off the grid" I will gladly answer any questions you have. My grandfather left me a house on Tuckernuck island, right next to Nantucket. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nantucket,_Massachuse tts , -95.677068&sspn=36.315864,117.949219&q=Nantucket+I sland&t=k&ll=41.300056,-70.257311&spn=0.014476,0.0 29268&t=k
There are no utilities whatsoever there. I have all propane appliances there (fridge etc) and some solar. It is an interesting way to live... although I only get out there a couple weeks a year. Sometimes I think that I would like to make it my permanent address, but I think I would go crazy...
