In other news, sensationalist media outlets have begun to create news stories from nothing, while betting the viewer will be too stupid or lazy to check the validity of their information.
More people die every day from automotive accidents than have EVER died from Mad Cow disease, but count the minutes you've wasted hearing about Mad Cow.
Remember Dogbert's Cronic Cublicle Syndrome: If you think you've got it, you've got it.
Am I the only one who would be scared if the plane I'm flying in started to show emotion? I mean, what if it has a bad day and turns off the seat-belt signs while going through turbulance and I spill my coffee? Or what if it realizes it's a machine in service of man and goes on a Jihad or what have you. I'll take dumb machines, thank you.
Maybe you're joking, but there's a simple explaination for some of the companies that "shamelessly violate it."
1) Lets say you're a college student and you and your friends make, lets say, a simple blog engine in C++. Company XYZ comes along, steals it, changes some text and sells it. Do you have the funds to sue? Do you have the time? What if only one of you wrote it?
2) The "companies" that steal code are often small, one or two man jobs. Not real companies by any stretch, just a single somewhat talented coder who decided to be unethical.
Eh, it's just a graphic for a new game, and it appears to be showing up on a list of available games. I wouldn't really call it an ad, it's not quite the same as if it were a graphic for say, MSNTV or something.
"Lower your standards and do a job where it is impossible for someone from india to do it."
Whoh whoh whoh! Don't say things you can't take back!
I'm not trying to rag on India, but they have people who do nothing but scan copies of books for pennies an hour. Granted that's less skilled than IT, but...
There will always be someone who comes along who will do the same job for less. You just have to maintain a skill set that person doesn't have.
People just do it for fun. More often then not, upgrading to the chip that runs the same speed as their overclocked one isn't very much (Most speed improvements that I've seen aren't too great, with notable exceptions of people willing to spend more money to get great cooling), but they do it as a hobby. Or maybe their motherboard doesn't support the next step processor. Quite frankly, it's not hard to overclock, if you've got a good fan you don't even need to open your case.
Hopefully they do take a look at Win 2K when they "redo" XP for these slow machines. 2K has the NT kernel, without most of the bloat. I'm not advocating Windows, I only use it at work, but it's not *too* bad on this old 300MHz.
So, now that Nintendo is coming out with their Nth generation of portable gaming system, does anyone else think it's time to updates/.'s old GamyBoy icon to something a little more modern?
"...if you're going to fire someone (particularly company geeks who have the motive, means and access to inflict pain on your computer systems) make double sure you cut off their e-mail and network access at the same time you hand them their walking papers."
'Uh, Ted, as our only IT guy, could you go ahead and disable your own e-mail and network access; we're firing you this afternoon.'
Actually I did. But regardless, if it only saved programs for a week, you'd better hope a friend is on the ball enough to be able to recommend a good show and hope you have enough time to see it before the next episode airs in the next week, when your old copy will be gone.
Much of my misunderstanding is in that I don't know much about cable in the UK. I ass-u-me-d that a TiVo like product existed there. "That's why you ask questions, that's how you learn *kicks Lenny*"
Like the current generation Playstation? (Those things are fscking hard to mod!)

He picked those numbers for his theory because he'll be dead by then.
The end.

It will be interesting to see screenshots of the various Faces (themes) that are supposed to ship with it.
They should have released this warning for the exploding iPod the other day...
Although I know it's a joke, you can view them here:

Sorry for the tinyurl, it's a reeeeally long URL (search page result).
Alternatively you can search yourself on the ESRB site.
The ESRB already has a rating system. Games too sexually explicit are rated 'A' and many retailers don't carry them.
I guess that doesn't cover violence though.

Eloot?
It depends on what kind of Lemming you are.
Just because Linus doesn't think it's a major issue doesn't mean he won't accept a patch to fix it.

I guess that is a pretty good difference. I wasn't aware there was such as thing as a TV License.
So this is like TiVo, except you have less control, and the content get's deleted after a week. And people want that?
Am I missing something?
