  1. Better Goverment than a Corporation on Australian Internet Filter Enters Trial Phase · · Score: 1

I don't want censored but am aware that it happens already. ISPs decide for themselves what they will allow through.
At the moment, I have some democratic rights that theoretically affect my government. I have a lot less control over what billion dollar companies do. Governments are swayed by ideas - some good and some not so. Companies are affected by money. They are not, and probably should not be, affected by what makes me happy. Their job is to make the best money for their shareholders.

One day, we might actually get a responsive government. Why should a corporation do the right or popular thing if there is more money in something else?

I think part of the reason it did not happen was that...

    • He has plenty of money and does not need welfare.
    • He is bringing out new stuff on occasion anyway
    • If someone is no longer getting money out of something this far on, they should have found alternative incomes by now anyway.
    • All the others advocating it did not seem poor either.
This is just the parasites trying to force on us what has already been rejected.

But why am I being taught to put these declarations in everything I do?

I wrote some simple pages of html - text, frames, pictures etc. I have tried them out under IE6, 7, firefox, amaya, opera, safari and lynx. Obviously no pictures in lynx but the only one that objects to them is amaya. It then shows everything fine anyway.

My point is that we are blindly putting these things in where there is no need. It seems a pity because other aspects of the standards make some useful differences - for example, like everything in lower case and proper nesting. They make it easier to follow someone else's stuff.

We are trying to put everything in xhtml where html is more appropriate. It seems a bit like saying that all car drivers need 5 point harnesses, crash helmets and flame proof clothing because it is needed by some. Many people stick to the speed limits and never do anything clever. We should be smart enough to stick to simple html where that is all we are needing.

Yes, I know that it is not correct without all the other stuff. It does not check with Amaya or the W3C site if all the other stuff is missing. I see no benefit in putting anything else in there except perhaps

Just because someone is patenting huge amounts of stuff, it does not indicate that they have innovated anything.
It means only that they have a large number of people whose job is to take existing ideas and patent them.

In Microsoft's defence, this does not prove that they have not invented anything either.
I think it is quite likely that some of the very clever people that they have working for them did create new ideas. It just hasn't got much connection with this abuse of the patent system.

No. I doubt you will find many of us who object to the idea of having money. It is the methods of getting it and the attitudes that MS have that people here may not be happy with.
In a place like /. I am unable to speak for others, so I shall speak for myself.

I don't like the fact that software is sent out before it is ready, just because some manager types want it to be released now.
If I buy clothes, I assume things are made and they didn't just ship me the cloth and expect me to sew it together myself.

When they release a new product, they will tell us all how fantastic it is.
A couple of years later, when it is about ready for use, they drop it and bring out the next item. They then tell us how this fixes the many shortcomings of its precescessor. I am told how bad it was. I know that in a couple of years, I will be told how rubbish this one is too.

Microsoft bears at least some, and perhaps much, of the blame for the mess we are all in with patents and copyrights.
So they think that GPL is socialism and thus theft? I think that Closed source is protectionist racketeering and thus theft.

When they were small and growing, they relied on the fact that lots of people "borrowed" their software. This enabled them to grow. It was profiting from theft.
Now they are in a position of market dominance, they object to what they once relied on. Stealing is wrong, so when people ask me for a dodgy copy of Office, I point them to a free alternative. I object to their hypocrisy, not the fact that they object to people stealing.

If I buy something, I expect to be able to use what I buy. I expect to be able to sell what I buy, when I no longer want it. I do this with books and cars, so why are MS different?

As I started, I don't object to making money. I just object to some methods of extortion and hypocrisy. I work for money and would love to have more. I will not hit people over the head to get it. My basic objection is that they are no longer a software company. They are a protection racket.
