What's wrong with offshore drilling? Please tell me you aren't someone who is going to condemn an entire industry because of one accident. No human enterprise ever attempted managed to get underway without mistakes. The important thing here is to learn what went wrong and take steps to ensure that it doesn't happen again in the future.

What went wrong was believing the the oil companies when they said they had a plan in the first place. When ever there's a mistake we get boned. Every time - this isn't just an isolated case - the industry has a 100% track record with major oils spills. The contingency plan that was supposed to keep this from happening didn't get implemented or just wasn't sufficient.

For better or worse human civilization can not exist without environmental impact. The knee-jerk reaction to this unfortunate incident by certain politicians is disappointing to say the least.

It is unfortunate that the knee-jerk reaction of a certain number of politicians is going to be to defend the oil companies and their actions will predictably be enough to keep us from making any real progress.

The main reason Apple is a little more spry is that it had to change or go bankrupt. It had to innovate and compete. Microsoft is still riding its dominate position (monopoly) on the desktop and really hasn't learned any new tricks. As the desktop moves to the palm top I guess we'll see if M$ can adapt its strategy to the mobile market very effectively. Apple gets to do what Apple does well - supply and OS/hardware combo that has a well thought out user interface.

In the US many (if not most) CS departments were affiliated with the Math department. There was a movement after I graduated (1982) to move CS departments to the engineering schools because there was more government funding for engineering. Math intersects programming in two ways: both programs and proofs benefit from a certain logical approach that can be learned in classes like abstract algebra and advanced calculus; numerical methods for solving integrals, differential equations, and linear algebra. The first helps with logically setting out a program. Minds are lazy; we all tend to believe "hand waving" rather than work out all the nitty gritty details. Learning mathematical proofs will help you recognize when you are hand waving and when you have really nailed things down. The second is a specialty for the sciences. There are a lot of good things to know about the pitfalls of numerical calculations on computers.
