I have a close affiliate relationship with a company that always seemed to 'love' IBM. IBM, this, IBM that, etc... (I was sick of hearing I-B-M).
They pay big money to IBM for very simple services - guess what? IBM doesn't always deliver on their promise. Often actually. They are pretty let down, and I'd like to re-iterate, they have had a close partner relationship with IBM for a number of years not (at least 4) and they pump good money into IBM. IBM has dropped the ball far too many times now. They are looking for alternatives.
The fact is, you can't trust ANYONE but yourself. Have double of everything. I know that's a touchy subject with most people, because, well, that's expensive!!!
True, but I've been professionally (very) involved with the IT industry and data center industry for nearly 15 years (wow, has it been that long??!!) and what I've found is 'the best equipment' isn't always the best thing! In a lot of cases I'd rather have 'mediorce' equipment (nothing too fancy, meaning not too expensive comparitively speaking), but have DOUBLE of every critical piece of hardware.
Some may flame me, but realistically, this approach has always saved my ass. I build it into the planning of all our critical IT projects. Hardware that is (nearly) ready to go, that sits on a shelf. Hardware always ends up being cheaper than time and elaborate service/emerg contracts etc.
I don't know your position exactly, but that's my two cents. In fact, as simple and as stupid as this sounds, IMHO I think this is some of the best advice I can offer the/. crowd.
I've been bitten today however, all 3 of our internet lines SUPER slow. Bell came in and determined it's not our equipment, but theirs. They are having trouble figuring out what is going on with all our T1's. My customers are getting irritated. I put in a request to upgrade to fiber 9 months ago, they've done very little to get it up and running as of yet. Now it's affecting business in a big (bad) way! (I thought I was being pro-active and staying ahead of it all)!!
I was speaking to a friend about a kit I saw 10 years ago at a local science store that let one build they're own holograms. Anyone seen anything like this recently?
It came with a bunch of optics, a laser, sandbox, film, etc. I wonder if Bill Gates was bored one weekend and started shooting the laser at some of his Windows XP cd-roms?! Those CD's are incredible, they are one big hologram!
I recall Microsoft had a problem with their MS Office clipart site - design gallery live (DGL). You type in monkey, and it showed a black kid playing on a jungle-gym!
Sure beats the old Windows 'ding.wav' ! Seriously, not trying to start a flame war or be a smart-ass, but I will definately be unplugging my speakers. Am I the only one to find the music to be a little annoying?
I've opened my drives lid, ran windows etc with it opened for a couple of days. The drive was 120g maxtor. Works fine, low dust environment. It's just about the dust level, that's all.
Doesn't have the same bandwidth as bluetooth. More of a signalling RF platform. I haven't played with ZigBee yet, but I'm involved with RFID and we're considering it for a few data applications.
The nice thing about ZigBee is it connects pretty much instataeous, unlike 802.11b and BlueTooth. Basically you 'switch on' your device and it's connected - instantly.
I have a bluetooth gps reciever. I would love it to have ZigBee, i find the whole waiting for the bluetooth to connect (even if only a few seconds) a bit of a pain in the ass. Considering everything you do now on a computer 'only takes a few seconds'. It's a freakin' serial port!, it should just instantly connect!
you're the reason you let so many idoits in the 'industry'.
Stop pushing thru idiots to fill 'IT' positions.
Seriously, most people in any of my pass classes didn't have a clue. I'm kept thinking to myself, IT is for idiots. All of the courses are based on memorization, not actual problem solving.
Funny how a $20,000 laser etching machine can drop the value of your notebook, and with such speed! Dude, in my opinion you made that computer look ugly. I like the color match between the apple logo and that graphic you put on however.
Other than me disagreeing with the artwork, must have been a real 'blast' (ha!) using that machine. Excellent work! (otherwise) (just being honest about the artwork, that's all) - don't think I should be modded down, just because of the honesty.
You could probably start a business with that machine inscribing people's names or graphics, and such on their metallic warez.
That's the tought part, no so much the samples, but having the talent to be able to put the 'score' together. There are two paths one can take - actually hook a piano keyboard up the computer and play away, or manually enter notes.
No midi comes with samples attached - the whole idea is that a midi file has only the note information, not the sample information.
So, these programs that give better samples are just a natural progression of technology. The note information still is the same. The note information is key, that is where you get a quality midi file from, not the insturments you plug in.
I've listened to some gawd-awful midi's before (using the default General Midi (GM) sound patches) that come with the sound blaster, but as soon as I 'connected' better insturments, or patch the stream into my synthesizers, it sounds great! - Some suck large, like a 2nd year piano student recorded them---yuck!
the bells make their money - still, even with VoIP. They are just pissed that it cuts into there local loop analogue business.
Make no mistake, business is what makes your home connection cheap. They keep prices down for residental while they nail commerical big time. My fiber, the cheapest bill I've ever seen (month) was $2600.00+tax.
Why do many people on Slashdot think they are some sort of 'god' like programmer?
Where does this UNIX guy get off thinking he's programming in a superior environment? You either code well or you don't.
Same way someone can play the piano well or they don't. Say someone can play the piano pretty darn good (not great) with minimal practice, I think then they may be better in ways then someone who practices continuously and only plays well, not fantastic. Same with coding.
Visual Studio does not rot the brain, wasting time on trivial matters and posting them to slashdot does. Darn, I just rotted my brain a little by contributing to this FUD.
This is bullshit - for every 1000 products successful in the US, Canada has 1. We finally have a product that people like (I think it needs improvement still, frankly).
I would like to see what patents NTP has over RIM. I've spent hours looking at other patents recorded at USPTO. It's usually by companies that no one has heard of, or companies that haven't done a single thing with their 'innovation'.
What did NTP file? "The process of sending electronic mail via cellular wireless networks" ?? WTF? I'm having a little difficulty finding what NTP holds that RIM is infringing on. It's probably ridiculous/obvious innovation. 'Innovation' that would naturally come to mind while anyone competent is developing a new product.
Argh! - You don't reject a well established, world-wide known company's request to continue with the legal process, that's bad business for EVERONE. RIM and NTP should simply work on some pay-off deal to shut them up. Check this out: http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000573042005/

I have had various results, may times I've had to use fiber to get my signal in and out. It depends on a number of factors. It depends on what is driving the cable, the quality of the cable and what EMI / RF it is being exposed to. Thanks for the info.

I read the site, maybe I missed an important page however, the S/PDIF coax and optical ports today overcome the very problem this system is trying to solve. Adding TCP/IP to the mix sounds like a layer of complication that doesn't need to exist.
I'm not sure this product will fly. I'm sure there will be some excellent fits for this product with probably a large number of existing customers, however, if computer cabling is run to speakers there still is only a 300 foot maximum distance. Yes, CAT 5 is inexpensive, however those speakers aren't ! I suspect fairly good, heavier gauge speaker wire at 300 foot lengths would probably still be cheaper than the speaker + cat5 combination. Plus you've got more technology to worry about failing, just to get the darn speaker working.
I wish the best of luck to polk audio, I like a lot of their products. Innovative thinking I might add. - I'm probably missing something very important when reading the site. I just woke up too, so my mind isn't very awake yet.
"large 'cylindrical' objects pertruding from my anal cavity"
Time to whip out the old 5 1/4" floppies!!!!!!
Look at any modern company. There is a rainbow of different people.
If your racist, make sure you hate everyone equally -- by doing so you'll be politically correct by not discriminating against only one race.
Racism has it's place -- like when you're trying to get out of jury-duty!
Note to mod: Score me low, or flame bait, or troll. I like my score low, makes me feel like I'm not a complete loser.
They make them frustrating so you will break them, then buy a new one.
