"Your a student at their university and you can't spell lose."
Considering you wrote "your" when you should have written "you're", I think this means you're qualified to make forum posts on the Internet. Congratulations!
"As long as prices are rising no one cares about your credit rating when it comes to mortgages, unless you have a really, really bad one."
So you're assuming that these market conditions are going to persist when you decide to buy a house? Furthermore, a non-existent credit history is going to impact the interest rate you receive on your mortgage. Your refusal to manage credit (you sound like you're trying to make some kind of moral stand although I am a little unclear on your point) is going to end up costing you quite a bit, if you are able to actually get a mortgage.
"I really don't see a legitimate reason for trying to hack the PS3."
Because you bought it and you have a right to? That's not good enough? If I were to ever buy a Sony product again (unlikely), it is my right to do whatever I want with it once I get it home. That's a legitimate reason whether you like it or not.
You've failed to prove any type of relationship between the existence of one museum and the American education system. Furthermore, you've not mentioned what education system you're even talking about. There is no national education system. There are state-run colleges and there are city-run elementary and high school education systems and there are privately run versions of both. What were you even talking about?
If I were to use your "logic", the fact that you made such a statement indicting the "American education system" says to me that the French are not very intelligent. But I am actually capable of critical thought and I understand that one dumb Frenchman does not mean that the entire country is full of morons. Yes, you are a moron. No, that does not mean all of France is filled with morons. This is my last reply to you because you've failed to say anything even remotely intelligent.
Do us all a favor and don't post your thoughts on the Internet ever again. Thanks!
What does one Australian creating a foolish museum have to do with indicting the education system of the entire United States? [Especially foolish considering that it's not a national system.]
My main point was that just because you're buying the latest new gadget to hit the marketplace does not mean that you're some soulless consumer with an empty life. Granted, some people do that and are just buying things for the sake of buying them. But I know that that is not the case for everyone. I don't buy the latest and greatest that often but when I do, it is with the clear idea that I am planning on gaining entertainment/enjoyment from using the item, rather than just owning the item as a status symbol or some other such nonsense.
I do think that you have a very smart worldview, to really think about the things you're buying and what you do with your time. I think we're more or less in agreement on the current state of things - I just thought you may have overstated your position (or I read something into it that wasn't there).
Now I'm going to take my discontinued Creative Zen Touch and go home. Have a good one.
"Well, aren't most people throwing their money away, anyway? How much consumer crap does one need to buy before one realizes that consumer crap will not make one happy, nor really improve one's life?"
I find that owning a DAP does make me happy. I enjoy listening to music. I find that being able to listen to music when I am away from my stereo is enjoyable. [The experience transfers!] Did I throw my money away when I bought my DAP? Am I mistaken in believing that I gain enjoyment out of owning it?
I know it's cute and hip to say that no one should own anything because it's all just mindless consumer gathering but do you really believe that?
I think it's a really tricky balancing act between satisfying the original fans and appealing to a wide audience. Obviously, in Spider-Man 3 if you want to introduce the black suit, you have to change it because the Secret Wars aren't going to fit into the movie (and still leave time for anything other than the Secret Wars) and I understand that but some of these liberties are a little tough to swallow.
I missed the Hulk game when it came out - maybe I'll pick it up now. Thanks for the suggestion.
We're going to have to agree to disagree on the Punisher movie. Fantastic 4 was serviceable although I think this sequel may be trying to bite off more than it can chew including Galactus. Although if they do it justice, it could be awesome.
"Comics to either medium seem to do relatively well if done right."
I am going to have to respectfully disagree with you sir. Prior to Spider-Man on the PS1, there really, in my opinion, had never been a good video game based on a comic book. Looking back there were games like Maximum Carnage on the SNES that, first of all, was really just a generic beat 'em up with Spider-Man skinned on and, even ignoring that, was a poor beat 'em up at that. You, of course, have all the Superman games which I think most can agree have been terrible. I remember a Superman game on the Genesis that was just awful. Again, generic side-scrolling. [Of course, Superman presents special challenges in making a game but I'm not going to get into that.] So I think that the rule on comics to video games has been that the video game was poor. I heard that the X-Men Rise of Apocalypse game was fairly good but missed it so I can't comment. Really, I think the only good comic-to-vg has been those Spider-Man games, with the one for PS2 being a really enjoyable game.
Now, as far as comics to movies go - again, I think that there have been problems. For every Batman Begins and Sin City, you've got a Batman and Robin, Superman IV, Batman Forever, Captain America, The Punisher [either one]. Although maybe there's just a limited sample to really comment on but I feel like there are more stinkers than good films. At the end of the day, X-Men 3 was a huge slap in the face to readers of the comic and I am still mad about it so perhaps all of the above is just nonsense that was leading up to me being snide.
The trick is that the changing medium means you're not usually going to have a direct translation of content. You still have to retain the spirit of the characters and their motivations. X-Men 3 took the idea, flushed it down the toilet, and spit in my face over and over again.
Look at the post you were replying to. It was discussing how long Windows has been a household name. [You even quoted it in your post.] Are you telling me that Linux has been a household name since Torvalds first started it??
You did all that hand-waving about when Windows became a recognized brand to the consumer (mentioning the Start button, icon, et cetera) yet just let the creation date of Linux stand without mentioning?
"As far as I can tell, if you don't download music you don't own or aren't getting from a highly questionable source then you won't have any problems. Maybe I missed it but has there been a rash of people being sued from using iTunes, the new version of Napster, or local CD stores?"
Apparently you missed people getting sued by the RIAA who don't even own computers.
"I know not everyone under the age of 21 is irresponsible... but a significant number of them are. If the threat of a little humiliation keeps someone from going out, having a few too many and then getting herself (or others) killed... I can't say that I mind."
A significant number of people over the age of 21 are irresponsible as well. NEWSFLASH: People are irresponsible.
You're right. People shouldn't try to push fake IDs onto bartenders. But do you not see the problem with vigilante bartenders scanning confiscated ids and posting them on the internet? How hard would it be for someone to get ahold of a photo and name/address of a person they don't like, go to a bar and get it confiscated? The cops probably won't get involved but the fake id will get scanned in and posted with this data.
The bartender should call the cops and give them the fake id. The bartender is not properly researching the circumstances of the fake ids enough, in my opinion.
I can't find any reference to Wardevil being moved to PS3 only because of space or processing issues. The only reasons I've found is the vague "to focus on one platform." Can you point me in the right direction?
Also, you mentioned a number of high-end EA games. Is Wardevil being published by EA? I saw the Wardevil site and noted that it is being developed by Digi-guys but couldn't find any information on a publisher. Also - what EA games have been canceled on the 360 and moved to the PS3?
"And no one I know, including many programmers, hardware people, or network administrators, seems to be a follower either."
I enjoy Dr. Dobbs and used to enjoy the C/C++ Users Journal. Queue is also decent...sometimes. But I guess those aren't exactly the kinds of magazines they sell in grocery stores.
My point was that I would think that that sentiment would be the majority opinion. I think it's been shown that people don't mind working up to slinging fireballs but if you want to mimic the universe of the stories and make magic very rare, I am not sure people would want to play that. Of course, I have no statistical evidence to support this assertion but I think it does make some sense...
I apologize for not fully forming that thought. It was pretty unclear from what I wrote.
I'm going to ignore this and respond to you in an honest manner. I am going to attempt to be civil to you even though you have not extended that courtesy to me.
"What part of "they recalled the bad DVDs" lead you to "I suppose you think Sony was doing a really great thing when they released that rootkit uninstaller too"?"
My reasoning was the following: you are commending Sony for recalling the DVDs but ignoring the fact that the DVDs were broken because Sony was attempting to take away fair use rights from the consumer. From this I was suggesting that you would commend Sony for taking action on the rootkit situation while ignoring the fact that it was Sony's own interest in trampling fair use that led to the situation in the first place. From my vantage point, you are ignoring the root cause of the situation which is that Sony doesn't believe in fair use - and I cannot tolerate that.
Are you going to try to respond in a calm manner to this post? If yes, feel free. If not, don't waste your time.

By the way, how reasoned was Vichy France?

The FCC has dictated that picking up a transmission like that is 100% legal.
I think there's a pretty big hole in your post.
You don't know what he said but you felt it was perfectly acceptable to call him, "That white trash old conservative radio host". That's really smart.
The bartender should call the cops and give them the fake id. The bartender is not properly researching the circumstances of the fake ids enough, in my opinion.
And why did you bring up Wardevils? That doesn't look to be an EA game at all.
Also, you mentioned a number of high-end EA games. Is Wardevil being published by EA? I saw the Wardevil site and noted that it is being developed by Digi-guys but couldn't find any information on a publisher. Also - what EA games have been canceled on the 360 and moved to the PS3?

If I am playing to pay a game every month, I want to be able to use magic.
Or you still have it but it's not functional?
Or you have it and it's functional but you don't have any games for it?
