Is it me, or are Microsoft, Google, and Yahoo practicing corporate imperialism? They buy out tons of small companies and most likely prevent further innovations. At this rate, the three companies will own all of these "unique" sites and make it difficult for competitors to break into the market, if not impossible. Yes, Google's motto is "Don't be evil", but seeing from how they've assisted the Chinese government in massive censorship, I doubt they still follow it internally.

One of the few Web 2.0 sites I can think of that isn't owned by these giants is meebo.com, and I wouldn't be surprised if someone bought them out soon. The era of the small internet "company" which participates in true interaction with users is coming to an end. Google may be innovative now, but corporate laziness will eventually set in and the overall quality of work will eventually decrease, similar to what happened in Microsoft.

It's pretty pitiful that developers being paid 6 figures work at a slower pace than volunteer open-source developers. It also fits into Microsoft's motto: Less Later. Just like Halo 2, one of the most anticipated games was out years late and really sucked.

Microsoft will always do this, just like Vienna (Fiji, whatever) is supposed to be a complete re-write, bullshit. They'll probably just add some crappy RAM and CPU hogging features and call it inovative.

The US already has nuclear supremacy, we have first-strike capability, the ability to destroy the rest of the world's nuclear arsenal in a first-strike. It's not like we're becoming the largest nuclear power in history, we are the largest nuclear power in history. The US is not capable of losing any war at this moment, building more bombs or not isn't really going to change anything. You could argue that Russia has a huge arsenal, but you forget the gap in their radar of the pacific, as well as the fact that their submarines and fighters are in almost unusable condition, and all they have left are ICBMs (Inter-Continental Balistic Missiles), which are extremely targets. China's nukes aren't even ready for launch, their fighters need 8 hours to be ready to drop a bomb, the ICBMs aren't highly numbered, and they have yet to produce a working submarine. Any nation intending to start nuclear way with the United States is already a goner. Take for instance North Korea, their new missile can supposedly hit continental US, but sadly it'll be destroyed if they even try testing it.

And don't go pointing to examples of mis-use of military power. The Iraq War is far from some outrageous money war, it's a political/strategical war. It's simply the second battle in a long war. You can't kill ideas, but you can destroy their physical manifestations. And for a group of people so hell bent of freedom, why aren't slashdotters a little more enthusiastic about sharing freedom with the rest of the world. We're only a small percentage of the world population here in the US, the majority of the world population lives in extreme poverty and/or under oppresize government.

What a politician said 40+ years ago is not relevant. The arms race and MAD saved mankind in the 20th century, and I surely hope you don't want nuclear holocaust. Ironically, the only way to keep nukes out of the wrong hands is by developing more advanced nukes.

  10. Re:Europe needs to commit to human rights on Tangible Impact of Censorship on Search Engines · · Score: 0

Actually, holocaust revisionism and denial is illegal in the entire EU. It is the "downplay of a human genocide". The question isn't whether the holocaust happened, that's irrelevant. The more important issue is natural rights. The EU has basically created thought-crime, the worst violation of fundamental human rights.

A lot of people don't agree with Section 1305, not to mention that it's rarely, if ever enforced. While on the other hand, a holocaust denier got sentenced to 6+ years in prison for a book he wrote denying the holocaust. You can't create laws to support a certain view of the truth, governments cannot impose laws on historians. Because in the end, history will ALWAYS win, however slowly or painfully, as we have seen in the course of human events.

And the fact that the UN has not condemned the EU for these actions is beyond me. It seems the the United States is the only place in the world where our rights are so valued. But even here, people take these great rights for granted. They don't realize that in other parts of the world, speaking against the government will get you shot. And people have allowed courts and congress to censor us.

Some people seriously need rude awakenings, among them: the EU, Germany (where the Nazi party is banned), France, China (which needs something more closely resembling a revolution), and ignorant americans.

See, while I for instance disagree with most people that criticize our current president (I do have my own complaints) I think that the right to do so is extremely important. A government that imposes beliefs or bans certain viewpoints is just one step closer to dictatorship.
