  1. HD-dvd could have survived on Microsoft To Drop HD DVD · · Score: 1

If Microsoft had fully embraced hd-dvd into the xbox360, instead as an add-on, the format would have survived as a gaming format.

Although maybe it could still live on. Anyone else remember the SegaCD?

  2. And a legal battle ensues on Cracking a Crypto Hard Drive Case · · Score: 1

So doesn't this fall under the legal issues with reverse engineering a commercial product, even if it completely disproves their advertising department?

  5. How to fix it on Facebook Sharing Too Much Personal Data With Application Developers · · Score: 1

My thought on how to fix this is to mandate each application to request specific information instead of just getting access to everything.

That way when people add applications they are prompted to allow an application access to specific information. I believe that if people realized exactly what information was being shared, rather than "Know who I am and access my information", they would think twice on adding applications that required irrelevant information.

  6. RIAA Math on Fixing US Broadband Would Cost $100 Billion · · Score: 1

    Fixing America's bandwidth = $1 billion
Divided by RIAA lawsuit for sharing a single 10 song cd @ $1.5 million a piece

  9. Bogus Stats on Microsoft Says Vista Has the Fewest Flaws · · Score: 1

I believe it's not exactly fair to measure discovered and reported security flaws over periods of time. The amount of public disclosure on security holes is going down since either the hackers arn't saying anything or the companies arn't reporting their problems to cover their behinds. There is more of an underground market for security holes than there ever has been and people know it.

  12. Is it just me? on Time Warner Cable to Test Tiered Bandwidth Caps · · Score: 1

Is it just me or do all the ISP providers really need network analysts and computer scientists in R&D! It just seems to me like too many marketing firms and businessman are not listening to international statistics for total bandwidth per capita. ISP's just don't seem to get that bandwidth requirements are not the same as they were 2-5 years ago. This is a new digital age, embrace it or get left out in the cold.

If the ISPs don't want to invest more money in lines, then they sure better be finding faster transmission methods with what they have (i.e. the new DOCSIS standards).

  13. Just to screw around with people's minds on What Would You Do As President? · · Score: 1

First, I'd put a bunch of third party and libertarians in the senate and congress so the 2 party system at least has a common enemy. A nice side effect would be that years down the road, the 2 party system would still be broken.

Second, I'd lower the required amount of potential votes needed to participate in national media political candidate debates (Nader should have been allowed to speak).

Finally, call a national press conference, including interrupting all national broadcasts. Then sit on the desk in the oval office smoke a joint, flip coins on if I was going to sign something or not, and kiss the VP. I figure it's best to be honest about what does on in the white house.

  14. I call bull on Vista Shipped On 39% of PCs In 2007 · · Score: 1, Redundant

I call bull. Those numbers are worthless since most consumers didn't have a choice in getting Vista with their new machines. I think a more important fact is that this is the first version of Windows where users have demanded either an alternative or just to keep the previous version. If they really want metrics, make all the running copies of vista for 3 months phone home and then count how many are still in use. I don't think my debian lappy will be responding to them.

  15. 2 Questions on Ask the Designers of D&D Fourth Edition · · Score: 1

    1. In today's world, how does WOTC plan to handle piracy of material?

It seems to me the real way to make money in this day in age isn't about protecting your content, but instead giving the consumer a reason to purchase materials not able to be pirated.

    2. Alongside of each book publication would it be possible to get a digital standardized format for rules to be used for character management software?

The biggest hindrance for people to start out playing the game with our group is char sheet management. Like a freebie base client with the SRD and the ability to add each books rules you buy. That way I can let new people just fill in a bunch of dropdown boxes or search fields as well as save prebuilt NPC's for future use.

  16. So this is how legitimacy is established now. on PI License May Soon Be Required for Computer Forensics · · Score: 1

So what this means is that every RIAA "investigator" in court will have to have a PI license and possibly have to understand what level of investigation is legal in each state before going to court. In the end, won't this just devalue the PI license if even tech savvy 13 yr olds have one? Even worse, would you really want a 13 yr old with a PI license?

  19. Intresting thought on Slashdot 10-Year Anniversary Charity Auction for the EFF · · Score: 1

So every day companies spend tens of thousands of dollars preventing their webservers from crumbling, and the current price for a slashdot effect is $2,000+. Why would people pay to have their webserver taken down by the mighty slashdot effect? My only reason is that you're trying to "load test" how good your implementation really is.

I vote that Google should buy it, just to see if they could be one of the few, the proud, the slashdot resistant.
