Where did you pull these figures out of?

    For starters, iTunes is free.

If you were referring to the iTunes music store, then Apple make very little on sales from it. It's mainly there to drive iPod sales. Oh, and I would not call music 'software'. It's music.

The mouse is no more expensive! It's almost exactly the same price!

    £35 - VAT = £28.87 * 1.77 = $51 ($2 difference)

This is usually a problem with most tech goods however, in the UK and Europe.

There was even a BBC News article about it a few weeks back.

Basically, the manufacturers have found that people in Europe are used to paying more for their goods, so they increase the pricing for their goods they send to europe.

Example: Adobe CS 2 US Academic: $369. UK Academic: £399 ($703). For the same box.

  11. Re:Damn Microsoft! on Mac OS X Intel Kernel Uses DRM · · Score: 0

I can remove Quicktime, the application, from my system very easily by dragging it to the trash and emptying it.

Quicktime the framework I can't easily remove because it's part of the OS. This isn't like Microsoft stopping you uninstalling IE or WMP. It's a well documented API that handles media content for the OS. Most media apps will use it. Even Realplayer uses quicktime.

The fact that you can remove the application is different to the microsoft problem because users can have a choice of what media player they have installed. They can remove Quicktime player and replace it with VLC or MPlayerOSX.

Hold down command an option as you drag to the dock icon.

This will override what the application specifies it can open (which is often incorrect) and attempt to open it anyway.

To test.. just dragged some readme.txt and readme.rtf files onto safari's icon and they worked.

As far as README goes, Safari doesn't know how to handle a file with no specified type or file extension. So it just downloads it or shows the item location in finder for you. As far as safari knows, that file could be a binary or some cryptic file format -- it can't tell.

  25. The real issue here on Codeweavers to Support Mac OS X on Intel · · Score: 1, Interesting

The real issue with this is that WINE on OS X may run 'essential' windows apps 'good enough'. That's the problem.

Now, if it's going to cost you quite a bit of money to do a native port to OS X of your app, why bother? I mean your app runs 'good enough'.

This is a massive negative for mac users who (unlike most linux and windows users) are used to a consistent user interface and extremely high quality, innovative software.

These apps that will run 'good enough' in Wine will not deliver this experience, but as far as the corporations are concerned they do not need to do a mac port now their product is usable on the mac platform.
