  2. Re:I'm in the market for a cell phone on iPhone Faces Uncertain Market · · Score: 1

Where have you been buying new, unlocked, cheap-o phones for even $250 or less?

And did you get the phone unlocked so you could use it on t-mobile or cingular (the only two nationwide GSM carriers) as your whims take you?

The iphone is a $699-799 phone of which you are paying $200 of amortized over a two year period.

If the iphone were unlocked it would cost at least $699-$799.

  3. technology coup / showcase - not a volume device on iPhone Faces Uncertain Market · · Score: 1

IMO The iphone is not likely to be a volume device like the $199 ipod that is their best seller or like a $49 after-signing-your-life-away RAZR. Take away the subsidy and you're talking about a $799 device. It is too specialized (phone + GSM contract from a US carrier + widescreen ipod = reduced number of customers) and expensive to meet the needs of everyone who otherwise wants to buy new apple stuff for themselves.

I think what Apple has basically done is throw down the gauntlet to say, "see what we can do? No one else is even close." It's like the Intel switch - totally amazing from a tech point of view and creates stakeholder buzz and props the shareprice and leaves the impression that apple can do anything they want to do at any time.

I'm blown away and I have zero plans to buy one.

Completely underrated, off-the-radar, insanely great, twisted melodic pop/folk/punk from Jason Frederick, ex-Means, about love, longing and heartbreak. i can't think of a record i listened to more this year -- a masterpiece. www.myspace.com/lovestoryinbloodred]

    3. MODEY LEMON - Curious City (Birdman) [They added moog/synths and fleshed out and freaked-out their great aggro rock]
    4. LAURA CANTRELL - Humming By The Flowered Vine (Matador) [Expressive, poignant, lovely real country. Laura is a class act, i only wish i had 1/10th the talent, intelligence, warmth and beauty as she has.]
    5. PORTASTATIC - Bright Ideas (Merge) [Mac from Superchunk's other band. Brilliant perfect 7Ts influenced pop]
    6. ART BRUT - Bang Bang Rock and Roll (Fierce Panda) [Really smart snappy rock n roll that wishes it was dumb.]
    7. HOWLING HEX - All Night Fox (Drag City) [Surprisingly uptempo twistoid rock n roll from Neil Michael Hagerty of Royal Trux fame.]
    8. A-LINES - You can touch (SFTRI) [If you crossed Kleenex, Nancy Sinatra, Patti Smith and Girlschool and locked them in the studio with Billy Childish it would sound like this. Outstanding! feat. Kyra from Headcoatees]

If you are really interested in a violent overthrow, I know some places where you can learn some tactics that seem to be quite effective against the world's military superpower e.g. iraq, somalia, vietnam.

Just hole up in a civilian neighborhood and use IED's/roadbombs etc and you'd be good to go.

My opinion is that America is virtually identical to every country in europe except where they have a conservative population of 48% and the US has one of 52%. Also, the business universe is completely interdependent throughout the world and there is no meaningful differnce between what left-wing or right-wing business leaders believe whether they are in Belgium, the US or India. The "capitalstic culture" you mock provides your food, shelter and security and is happy to do it.

  10. Music more important than medium on Analog Revival Means Vinyl Will Outlive CD · · Score: 1

I've dabbled in audiophilia and I've firmly decided that while there probably is a practical benefit from a lot of the expensive equipment out there, that since I have limited funds available for music and music equipment purchases...

I'd much rather have MORE music of "inferior sound quality" or on an "inferior format" than to have less music that "sounds better."

A lot of music is recorded poorly and mastered badly or whatever all that means, but if it's good music I don't worry about that either. Also, if I already have the legally obtained mp3s of a good record, I'm not going to blow a bunch of money on a special 300g repressing when I could just buy more new music.

E.g. I buy music on emusic which is compressed etc, because it's only on average $3-4 for an album.

Vinyl hasn't gone anywhere and big deal that it's created enough interest for this story, but people that get hung up on it and playback equipment don't like music as much as they like stuff (rare LPs, tube amplifiers).

If you want to "discover" "obscure" music go to a band's website that get's a positive review from a trusted source or that your favorite DJ plays - or however you hear / hear about new music. 99% of non major label bands put mp3s of emphasis tracks right on their website. If you like those, buy their record from emusic if it's available there or from amazon which has a selection that BLOWS AWAY itms.
