Some tablet PCs might be ok, depending on what sort of tablet screen it has, but the one I purchased had terrible pressure response and accuracy. In practice it felt like drawing with an old disposable Bic.

I now use an Intuos3 6x11", which I picked up for about $300. Excellent pressure response, no perceptible position jitter, and just a much better feel in general. I sometimes miss being able to turn the computer to get a better angle, but there are quick rotation controls in many drawing apps.

Really, I am not even sure what you are trying to suggest by this vague post. Are you saying that coders and artists should have less ego involved when working with each other? That sounds like what you are trying to say... and it doesn't really conflict with that quote in any big way.

You link to a game with a hand drawn look, and somehow that proves there are no communication issues between developers working on different parts of the game except pride. The assertion seems somewhat of a non sequitur, frankly.

I agree that the hiding thing, introduced in Win2k, was somewhat annoying and deserved to be disabled. What I do not agree with is the slam against the XP menu. Is it really so hard to hit "All Programs" instead of "Programs"? You don't have to rely on the commonly used programs list, you know. Other than that the changes are mostly cosmetic, aside from fun things like being able to have a "control panel" item without playing games with folders full of shortcuts stuffed in '/User/Start menu'.

As to the Vista start menu, I only partially disagree. Having the "All Programs" list come up in a scrollable box looks nicer, but it is going to take some getting used to. Also, my programs list is much less tidy on the Vista box than XP... Because I hardly ever use it anymore; I have become vastly spoiled with the search box in Vista. If I want to work on a specific file, listen to one song, or open a program I just type Win, part of the filename, and click the magic button. It is almost like being back in the good ol' days of CLI shortcuts, and I'd gladly take it over the funky Win98 menu.

This entire thread is about people wanting to use something else exactly as you suggest so why do we need to argue? I'll just go on enjoying the sensation of invisible pixies lapping at my nethers every time I color something in PhotoShop. You can go on letting the GIMP do whatever it does when you turn it on. Soon, thanks to Google and the fine folks at Codeweavers, I might be doing what I do on Linux, rather than Vista or XP. Let us celebrate with cake!

I don't think throwing money at the GIMP project will fix everything that is wrong with it. The GIMP is an above average image program that might be great in a few years, but Adobe PhotoShop is great right now without gambling on future improvements.

Digital inputs are, indeed, better for games that only support digital control. Since we were discussing the relative merits of the full stick versus the thumb stick from a physical control standpoint I do not see the relevance. Had you noted the utility of the thumb stick for making quick enough movements to replace the d-pad or some such you might have been more on point.

  14. Re:What happened to the joystick? on Whatever Happened To The Joystick? · · Score: 1

I think that you have the bit about precise movements being harder on a large stick exactly backwards. Think of it like this: on a full size stick you have a wider area over which the points of control are distributed, and also a better grip on the control surface usually. So rather than moving your thumb 1mm to change the control 10% as you might on a gamepad you would move your thumb (and hand) a full centimeter to change the control by that much on a full stick. My guess is that the extra precision you feel is a result of improvements in software over the years.

The default setting should be one that works the best for the majority of users. Those users running a non-standard configuration are more likely to know what settings should be adjusted for best performance as problems may have popped up in the past. Therefor we should assume that a user with a totally ordinary configuration isn't looking as closely for mistakes during setup.

So, let us look at two scenarios and decide which is worse.
    Small cache:
    1. User wants to apply a filter to the high resolution digital photo or scan he just took.
    2. GIMP lags, User is annoyed.

    Large cache:
    1. User applies filter to the high resolution photo or scan he just took.
    2. User saves a smaller version for posting online, leaves original image open GIMP.

    4. Firefox lags, user is annoyed.

User gets to annoyance faster with the overly conservative default and they're annoyed at GIMP directly, not Firefox, or iTunes, or whatever other program suddenly wants lots of RAM. Just my thoughts on the subject.
