Just like a woman to write a post thinking she knows about playing games ;) (just kidding) In all serious, I'm 25, got a good job, and am drooling for the DS lite. The best games I've ever played were the 2d games of the 16-bit generation, which seems to be the sweet spot for the ds, and it's freaking portable. I'll buy one the first day I can. Now if only they would port nights to it and all of you mainstream geeks would have seen what you've been missing for the past ten years.

That would work, or the game developers could just include keyboard and mouse support for their xbox games. They will eventually, just wait till a crop of badass online RTS and MMORPGS pops up for the 360.
MS should pull that on Halo 3, that would probably convince alot of the online fps'ers to pick it up.

I'm curious to see if someone tries to pull down a subscription fee for a game on top of the xbox live subscription. Those games make a ton of money, I'm sure the distribs would love to tap the console installed base.

  18. Because you can't rip DVDs on Apple Sells 1 Million Videos in Under 20 Days · · Score: 1

This is purely a result of iTune's video features being severely crippled. You can't rip your DVDs, nor can you import video in other formats. The only way a person can easily watch videos on their new video iPod is download them from the iTunes store, hence the high sales figures. If you want to put your own content on it, you have to either rip/download it, then decompress it to a huge raw file, then re-encode it to H.264, a process that takes hours on my dual 2.7 ghz G5. Obviously we will never see DVD ripping, and probably not xvid/divx importing either. I could live with buying all of my video media from ITMS if it was in High Def, or even DVD res. I downloaded an episode of Lost, and the quality was terrible when watched at full screen. In addition, this whole distribution channel is in severe need of a video enabled airport express. I just hope they eventually get it right.

  19. Re:huh? on Could IBM Shake up the Search Engine World? · · Score: 1

Pagerank is beautiful for it's simplicity, but it is a specific implementation of the search layer. What IBM is touching on here is not a search layer, it's parseing layer on top of the search engine. That parseing layer will be where the search companies fight it out over the next few years. The concept is called Natural Language Search and I'm sure all the big boys have been working on it for some time now. IBM hasn't hit it here, but they defintely just took a step ahead of google et al.

Ask Jeeves tried a new implemenation of it this May, but it's still very raw. It is probably the first implementation we've seen of Kozoru's natural language processing engine (although there is no mention of it anywhere). I've been working on the problem as well, and am quite pleased with my results. Hopefully I'm about to start that company that hardly anyone has heard of yet! :)
