I'm tired of Gentoo running Enemy Territory perfectly in a 64bit environment, it really is about time Ubuntu (/Debian) pulled their socks up and got the 64bit ditro up to speed. I want a desktop and games, not hours of compiling stuff, damnit:(
Works fine for me on a native AMD64 Ubuntu flight-4 install, admittedly I had to get some community debs from the Ubuntu forum to get compiz to work on AMD64 but it should be easy x86 I hear. Since I got it working it's fast and fun. It certainly rivals OS X in some ways and this is only the beginning;)
The original Driver game on the PS1 was excellent but due to the hardware it ran a little slow. I had a friend who had it on the PC with a force feedback steering wheel and I must say it was absolutely amazing to play, real 70s driving fun. The original game had it right but the sequels that force you to get out of the car ruined the game for me.
Driver was at it's best when all you did was drive.
They can bundle anything they want AFAIK. The condition would be that as long as you can completely remove it or choose to not have it installed by default it's fair.
Apple doesn't have a monopoly on desktop operating systems and Microsoft does. This is an important difference because Microsoft use their desktop operating system monopoly to create another monopoly for themselves in other markets by bundling IE / WMP and making sure you can't remove them.
What is needed is a modular operating system where you can pick and choose whatever you like so you can make it as bloated or as streamlined as you need while still retaining all the functionality. That's why I run Linux.
Surely now is the time for even competing companies to use more a more open approach.
The more code, graphics and sound that's available freely then the lower the development costs of the games. As a side note more games should be created as the entry bar is lowered but this will likely never happen as no company tends to willingly help the competition. But a man I can dream, a man can dream...
The parent may be modded funny (and it is a funny comment) but it's actually true. Vista with all its (so called) good looks doesn't mean anything other than the special effects department got alot of work this year.
Good point, and on the flip side what about all the Linux installs that come with Firefox already there like the growing Ubuntu user base? What about when I download Firefox, burn it to CD and install it on more than one PC?
This is all moot anyway as what really matters is how many people are actively using it as their main browser.
I did a dist-upgrade from Ubuntu 5.04 a month or two ago and have been updating it daily. I recall no problems and I suspect a dist-upgrade now should be completely painless.
Good luck, Ubuntu 5.10 is a nice upgrade:)
Well for a start it's "Cock-up" and secondly being a UK resident I don't think it's Unfortunate (rather the opposite for me) but then as a T.V. license payer I wouldn't object to other countries using the content under the same terms either so lets hope it gets extended:)
Wow, the reviews are really good and I'm looking for a sound card right now to go with my Logitech Z-5500's but I only use linux so... Does this card work with linux?:)
"The number one ad that had 17% of the 1000 people interviewed reaching for the off switch was the Sainsbury's supermarket campaign featuring the comic actor John Cleese."
OS/2 is also heavily used in their (UK) call centre, however I was told by a LAN support guy that they were going to move to windows. This was last year, no idea if it happened.
I've had almost zero problems with nvidia drivers on linux and I've been using them for years on nvidia cards ranging from the TNT to the 6800GT. I've played id FPS games in competitions and I've always had less problems than my windows clan mates. Maybe I'm lucky, I don't know, but that's what happened.

I'd be happy with that situation.

This reminds me of something I've heard before:
Decoding the Algorithm for Pop Music

No more rhymes now, I mean it. ...Inconceivable!

Jump 'n' Bump? http://jumpbump.mine.nu/
That may be true but it didn't stop the original GP32 running Doom, Quake and lots more!
I have a GC with Mario Sunshine but no other games. I thought I could give up the PC FPS, how foolish was I ;)
