    Why?

    RIAA wants P2P networks shutdown due to these copyright issues.

    Universities and other organizations block P2P because of these same copyright issues, under pressure from lawsuit threats by the RIAA.

    The RIAA is a threat to P2P, even if you are just sharing original works of art.

    Legal users may not have as much of an interest in seeing RIAA get a punch to the kidneys, but there is still some cause for interest, I'd say.

    [Legal uses of P2P filesharing are an innocent bystander, but they still will get gunned down with illegals]

    (( this coming from someone who had his access removed at a university for sharing the Project Gutenberg DVD on eDonkey ))

    If any of these cases against the RIAA are successful... I think we'll see many more people standing up to them.

    The book smart coders think their way is the best, the hobbyist will think "I've been doing this for FUN, I'm obviously better" ... people in the middle think their blend of experience makes them better.

    It would be better then, to just blow the whistle without giving specific details which could be used to "bring the Internet to its knees" ...

    Cisco would be hurt, no secrets would be divulged, and Cisco would still try to fix the problem before it was discovered...

    Of course, without the specifics, the information may be seen as less valid, but if they investigate the source, and the source is a trusted expert (as in this case) ... then why do you need to know the specifics? ... I'm sure Lynn contacted Cisco, also, and notified them of this vulnerability...

    Hmm, you seem to be reading very much into what I was saying.

    No, covering up a wide-affecting vulnerability should ALSO have consequences.

    However, spreading the vulnerability is ALSO just inviting someone to use it.

    Sure, Cisco would have to fix it then, but the damage would already be done...

    You think too much in blacks and whites, saying 'spreading that information is not a good idea' does not mean that Cisco is doing right, there is a possible conclusion that can be drawn (that I have drawn) ... that says BOTH are wrong...

    Well, beyond our user needs...

    A lot of companies use E-mail to arrange things, do online ordering (could mean millions in losses for online only companies) ...

    Such an "attack" would destabalize faith in tech stocks and businesses... prices drop, the companies make adjustments to try and cover these losses... this can cause loss of jobs, revenue, etc...

    It'd be a sharp blow... not as bad as blowing up a building, but it'd be a low point for the year, probably...

    A lot of you are saying the information on this vulnerability, which could cripple the Internet if taken advantage of, in order for Cisco to fix it?

    I may be just a simple caveman, but this sounds like a tremendously bad idea... someone would take advantage of it sooner or later...

    The Internet dropping, even for a few hours, would have a profoundly negative impact on the world economy...

    I mean, geez, just think about it...

    Ultima Online had this problem... a lot.

    It really killed the gold market, everything was incredibly inflated because people would dupe 10 million gold checks (which are what they sound like, just a marker for 10 million gold) ...

    It's not always trackable if you move it into items... trade it away, buy stuff from stores then resell it... it's like virtual money laundering...

    Though that all depends on if/how WoW tracks gold, perhaps they've made improvements over UO (as UO is rather old) ... ;)

    That is the connotative meaning of monopoly... the actual dictionary definition is different :)

    Etymology: Latin monopolium, from Greek monopOlion, from mon- + pOlein to sell
    1 : exclusive ownership through legal privilege, command of supply, or concerted action
    2 : exclusive possession or control
    3 : a commodity controlled by one party
    4 : one that has a monopoly

    This isn't a rebuff or anything, I'm just being overly technical ;)

    Indeed, couple the facts that the US created it... with the fact that they own almost all of it... and then add the fact that they were kind enough to share it with other nations, in the spirit of international community and freedom... ... and you will get why the prospect of the UN running it irritates me.

    The UN see a way to make a buck and a way to get control and influence. The member nations want whatever power they can get for themselves.

    Never mind that taking these controls, potentially taxing them, robs the Americans who created the infrastructure of their rights. It's not about the intellectual property of Americans or even just "possession being 9/10ths" and all of that... the United Nations DESERVES this!

    I had a long day, too, and a long night, have mercy!

    No sleep + 24 segfaults (I counted, I keep a scoreboard in each program I write) ... now, after 36 hours of waking out-of-bounds writing hell, I SLEEP... but you had to go and destroy my ENGLISH FANTASY wherein I actually can use the language properly! ...

    Melodramatic, I know... but hey ;)
