This has sort of happened, not at quite 5 gigabit a second. I am at a school that has Internet2 access. A couple months ago a security hole opened up in one of our unix networks. Several outside users gained root access and launched a DDoS attack against some computers at BU using the full gigabit pipe. It was fixed relatively quickly and security has since been tightened.

This is flamebait, but it would be nice to have some standards on slashdot.

Right now this does not seem very likely as i don't think movie producers nessarily go with the most cost effective solutions. Often they will choose the trendiest. So its obviously trendier to hire Gucci to mkae your costumes than to contract ILM to do it.
Also we can look at the public's approval of Final Fantasy to see that people aren't really ready to accept CG as a replacement to real people.

  12. Profitability on Customers Rate PC Vendors' Tech Support · · Score: 3, Interesting

In amny ways tech support is a waste of money for the computer companies. Most people aren't very intelligent consumers. By intelligent i mean people who would pikc up a copy of consumer reports and closely analyze the the details of a brand of computers such as how good their tech support is. Instead most people will buy things based on the specs, the looks, and the price. So, for the msot part Compaq's crappy tech support doesn't hurt them, because the person who needs tech support has already paid for the product and therefore any time they spend on them represents a loss in money.

Dell is the top manufacturer of PCs, no doubt largely because of its good technical support, however the contrast in the number of sales for Dell vs Compaq doesn't correlate well with the tech support satisfaction numbers.

The odds on these two pieces of work not being related have to be pretty slim. Its a pretty clear gameplan, XBOX2 is a "Windows Home Gateway", PS3 is a "Multimedia Home Gateway" that happens to be running linux.

You have absolutely no proof to back up these claims. Do you know HOW much research IBM does?
Here is a list of research products [ibm.com]. Thats about 400 different projects that IBM is currently working on. Given the amount of projects I'de say there is a greater probability that they're NOT related. Except that they both involve parallel processing.

  15. Its not THAT Unbelievable on Boeing Joins In Anti-Gravity Search · · Score: 5, Interesting

I'm sure alot of you will first respond by saying thats impossible. But you're wrong. There are no laws of physics that say its is impossible to block gravity. At this point we no so litle about gravity that it is difficult to make any conclusions about it.
Some elementary electromagnetism courses will teach you about faraday cages, which block electromagnetic radiation. Pretty much everyone has experienced this. Ever walk into a concrete building and lose cell phone reception? This is because the concrete is reinforced with steel bars which form a kind of metalic cage around you, this is a faraday cage.
Now like electromagnetism, gravity is one of the four fundamental forces. If we can create a shield to block one of them why not block gravity?

  17. Defending the Record Companies in some Ways on Music Companies Convicted of Price Fixing Again · · Score: 1

ALright, let me first say that i don't approve of many of the actions of the record companies. But many people here go off about how the record companies abuse their control over the musicians, because the musicians don't get much money from the price of a single CD. This is all very true, the record companies do get the majority of the moeny from a CD sale, but they also spend loads of money on alot of these artists. I'm not sure of the exact price that it takes to put together a music video, but i imagine its in the millions, now the artists themselves sure as hell don't pay these costs. Also the record company has to promote songs and albums by paying radio stations and MTV to play them. Most popular musicians today owe all of their fame to a record company. It is these 'evil' companies which have talent scouts that go around searching for potential stars. I admit that there are a few very talented musicians that could make it big in the country by their skill alone, but these people are few and far between. For the most part it is the record companies that makes these people stars.

This post does focus largely on the company's efforts to promote big stars like Britney Speares, N'Sync, and other large pop stars. But it still applies to almost anyone artist who is picked up bya record label.

Microsoft has been spending ac rap load of money in this country to combat piracy. American piracy is nothing compared to Chinese piracy. its like comparing communism and capitalism... Oh wait it IS comparing capitalism and communism.

Yes yes i know that china has had an open door policy for a while now as far as foreign markets go and yes there are thousand of american companies making money there. The point i'm really trying to get across is that the market in china would be much different than it is here. Computers are not very prominent in most people's lives there. The biggest market i can see this in is the business market there.

I imagine that the people at Redhat have realized this and thus aren't trying to go for the windows population, instead they go for people who they know already use linux.
