The second result on Google when searching for 'Wozniak Slashdot' is this link: http://apple.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=09/02/04/2331203&from=rss
I'm fairly surprised, the slashdot article is actually dated before the one you linked (and, interestingly, the New York Times article it links to, talk about the mysterious future!), meaning slashdot was actually semi-current!
By new owners do you mean VA (9 years and a few days ago) or has something more happened more recently that has yet to be reflected on the handy-dandy timeline of Slashdot.org's history on Wikipedia?

Did you even read the post? It mentioned "...wet clumpy soil..." Now, the last time I checked, we in these United States have lots of wet clumpy soil.

We in these United States also have lots of gravity (Plus, we are exceptionally good at the "mass" part of making gravity too!), which probably makes it a bit easier to get dirt to fall into an oven.

  10. Compression on NASA Opens Space Image Library · · Score: 1

I was able to get to look at a picture from a direct link someone posted even though the site was going very slow and downloaded a neat picture. For some reason, the jpeg file was in a .zip, so the "compressed" file was actually a bit larger (about 4 KB) than the actual picture, making the extra compression kind of pointless. Maybe that's why they're getting slashdotted so badly!

Even though the installer claims to need 10.5.3, I was able to get Spore to run on 10.4.11

After downloading and opening the .dmg drag the installation application to your hard-drive and right-click Show Package Contents. Go to to Contents/Resources and open up tginstall.plist. Change the value of MinimumSystemVersion to your version of Mac OS or an earlier one. Save it and open the modified installer on your hard-drive. It should install normally.
After you have installed it, go to the SPORE folder that it created in your Applications folder or wherever you installed it. Once again, right click and show package contents on the app. Go to Contents and, after opening Info.plist, change minimum system version again.

Go back and open the actual application. The only problem I've encountered is that it may take up to a minute to get past the splash screen, but it went faster for me the second time. I don't know if it took longer because of running it under a different OS, or because Cider just sucks compared to a native game.

Sorry, I forgot how a high class device iPhone was. I used/use freeware applications developed on $80 second hand S60 phones/cheap PCs on a $1000 Nokia PDA. Never thought those guys had to be rich to develop freeware for free. ... That is what happens if you alienate those naive people from developing freeware on your market creating competition/pro active defence against any idiot who can claim a unlicensed 3rd party IM program is worth $30.
Unless I'm misinterpreting the big Download the Free SDK button on Apple's website, it costs absolutely nothing to make iPhone/iPod Touch programs. However, it's $99 if you want Apple to host and distribute your programs for you. If Apple actually doesn't let let you put programs on an iPhone and only lets developers that don't pay use the emulator then it's only a very short matter of time until someone figures out a way to put stuff coded in the SDK onto the iPhone anyways.
  22. Re:Dtrace (wrong topic name) on Mac OS X Secretly Cripples Non-Apple Software · · Score: 2, Insightful

In windows you can just select default email client, default webbrowser, etc. In OSX, you gotta go mess around with dozens of file extensions, go in and out of programs to do it. Changing the default email client or web browser is a 4 step process*:

Choosing an email application other than Mail

    Open Mail (/Applications/Mail).
From the Mail menu, choose Preferences.
    Click the General button.
Choose your desired default email application from the Default Email Reader pop-up menu.
Note: You may need to set up the email application with your email account information. This information is not automatically exported from Mail.

Choosing a default Web browser other than Safari

    Open Safari (/Applications).
From the Safari menu, choose Preferences.
    Click the General button.
Choose a different browser from the Default Web Browser pop-up menu.

(from http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25566, which is the very first link on Google when searching for Mac OSX default browser.)
    * Sometimes it's only a one step process. Apple claims that if you want to change your default browser/email client again you have to still have a copy of Safari or Mail on your computer, but actually most browsers, such as Firefox, automatically let you know if they are not the default browser and give you the option of making them default, which is just a matter of clicking "Yes" at a prompt.
