The F-18 (the original one... they've all been replaced by heavier planes) had an EMPTY weight just 1000kg less than that. It's max take off weight from a US Carrier was almost over twice that of the Sea Harrier.

The USA still uses the original F-18 Hornet in many Carrier squadrons (about half are upgraded to Super Hornets and many of those were either replacing A-6 Intruders or F-14 Tomcats).

The new British carriers (suppose to launch Eurofighter variant) will also have a catapult.

Originally they were going to stick with STOVL on the new carrier(probably only one will be built) using the STOVL F-35B Joint Strike Fighter but the recent decision to go with CATOBAR and non-STOVL F-35C also opens up the possibility to use a Navalized Eurofighter as well as E-3 AEW.

What really happened is the Dems thought they had a mandate when they really didn't. They busily implemented their agenda over the objections of the people who ultimately bitch slapped them in this last election.

The person who languishes in a dead in job that anyone could do and never takes the initiative to develop marketable job skills will never get ahead, they will always be in that dead in job.

Also, the person you describe working in "filthy conditions" is most likely there because of the bad decisions they made in life which left them with the ability to only do mindless, unskilled jobs. The other person who works in an air conditioned office worked hard and developed their mind and can do jobs that involve skills that the manual laborer never bothered to develop.

I work with plenty of people who work hard all day but then they leave work to go play. Other jobs open up that pay more but they don't want to take the risk that they may fail in a job that has more responsibility.

Herbicide resistance can lead to less herbicide use because you can then apply one herbicide that kills everything but the one thing that is resistant rather than having to apply multiple chemicals depending on what weed you need to eradicate. The same could be said for pesticide resistance, perhaps you can apply stronger chemicals but less often which may be safer than having to apply weaker stuff more often.

I don't think the point is to have a gun fight on the ship. The point is to drive the pirates away before they get close. One hit from a decent weapon on a tiny skiff that they use can start a leak and quickly put an end to any desire to press an attack and instead motivate them to bail water and head for home.

When shooting at a pirate skiff attacking a large ship, the target is the tiny boat and any pirates that get hit are keeping bullets from putting holes in the skiff.

  10. Re:A few items to consider first on Air Cannon Ties Pirates In Knots · · Score: 1

Some here are suggesting that artilery be mounted on ships which is overkill.

Since the pirates use small open motor boats, an "assault" type (AK, AR, etc.) of weapon would be quite effective. Even a bolt action hunting rifle would be effective. Since the crew of a large cargo ship will have the ability to shoot at the pirates from a much higher position (20-30 feet at least) they can start putting holes in any skiff that gets too close. One or two holes in the skiff and the pirates are bailing water rather than shooting back.

I don't think the pirates would be successful in armoring their boats since that would slow them down too much or make them less seaworthy or if they build a larger armored boat then they become easy pickings for warships that patrol the area.

  11. Re:Pro-tip: Shoot them dead. on Air Cannon Ties Pirates In Knots · · Score: 1

Maybe this is rocket science. Equip the merchant ships with a surface-to-surface rocket launcher.

A much cheaper solution would be one or two decent rifles.

These thugs are frequently attacking cargo ships with small open motorboats counting on the fact that the large merchant ship has no arms at all. One man with a decent rifle (like an AR-15, AK, M16 whatever (even a bolt action hunting rifle))can sink them. The ship's sniper can take cover at a high point in the ship, as the "skiff" starts getting closer and not heading warning to leave, the sniper starts shooting down into the boat when they get within several hundred yards. One hit on the boat and the pirates will likely stop the pursuit and commence with bailing water before they sink.

I would wager that once counter fire starts raining down on the skiff they will turn tail and run because they know that getting closer will just put holes in the boat and eventually the people or the motor.

No it is not. GM went bankrupt because Government and the UAW. Government foisted CAFE mileage standards on them that forced them to build and sell cars that they couldn't make money on and retarded their ability to sell larger cars and trucks that they were better and building. UAW has a MONOPOLY on all labor for the big 3 and forced them into higher labor costs and kept them from importing the smaller cars that their European subsidiary already produced (now the Govt. is trying to sell off those subsidiaries on the condition that they never export the cars to the USA).

Shooting at them from the relatively high deck of a merchant ship, even at long range, will quickly put holes in these tiny boats which will end the problem quickly.

If the pirates try to respond by armoring their boats then they will loose the advantage of speed and stealth which will make it harder to catch up to a cargo ship that runs and harder to evade a warship.
