Completely agree. They absolutely don't need us. Same goes for Iraq and anywhere else. I wish the US would stay out of foreign affairs, but it seems like these people "leading" our country have nothing better to do. Also, prove to me that Iraq threatened us with biological weapons giving good reason to go to war.
I would buy so many more DVDs if they were this low of a price (or maybe a little higher). It seems like they are selling some with no menus, extra features, etc. All I care about the movie. I have never really cared about behind the scenes-type stuff. As long as it's excellent quality DVD-9 MPEG2 for that price, I'l certainly pay. Also, it has to come with covers just like any other DVD. I really am not into downloading. Physical media continues to make more sense to me because unlike downloads, it's truly tangible.
There are people on Slashdot who would say media shoudn't be free. People who don't use adblockers or avoid using adblockers to the point of only blocking absolutely annoying ads. The fact of the matter really is that it would be great if media was free, but unfortunately for you, when kids are growing up here and thinking that they want to be actors like they see on TV, they want to be paid, and with lots of money of course (because it's Hollywood). It's amazing too, because Hollywood has been quite possibly overpaying everyone involved, and overpaying for music licensing, and all sorts of other licensing. The people making the most money are the actors, when arguably, you could say the most talented are the video editors, cameramen, directors, and everyone else, especially CG designers. Eventually Hollywood will just run out of money and that's what a lot of people have been wanting since it's beginning. I can't say whether it would be good or bad, the end of at least old Hollywood. I think a new Hollywood would start up real soon after.
What I guess the rest of the world is waiting for is for the US to stop trying to sell media and end the Hollywood/music artist life in riches lifestyle (IMO it's a pretty bad influence since these actors go on a red carpet, dressed to impress, and the media goes crazy for what I don't think is a big deal at all). From this point on, news would be free, television broadcasting would somehow be free (hardware costs money) and I guess there would still be ads on it (which I personally would hate). Music would also be free somehow. We'd be back to basics as far as buying things. Are video games also going to be free? That would change A LOT, I think. Free software is a great example of how free does somewhat work, but we all know it doesn't work perfectly by any means.
The issue you're speaking of is sort of like a farmer just giving his food to the poor who can't buy it simply because it's for the "good of mankind." Certainly it's noble, but at the moment, harvesting and such is worth money.
There hasn't been a company in the US doing this (unless you want to count the numerous colleges blocking the normal ports). If they want a solution, they can block all the ports except for 80, 443, 21, 59, 6667, and a few more. If no one is using 6667 for an IRC server they could then use that for torrents, which is probably a big deal to a ISP.
The major thing about all this now is that encryption has come into play. Encryption of course sort of hides what kind of data is going through that port, but it also enables for some connections that won't work unencrypted to work better. Most smart torrent users are not using 6881-6889 anyway. (The first solution to traffic shaping was changing the port.) Azureus and uTorrent both support encryption now, specifically an implementation of RC4. So then what now? Should the cable companies make encryption a violation of terms of service? Or even go as far as to lobby the Congress (I'm talking US) to make it illegal without some sort of license (VeriSign would have it first of course)? It all sounds crazy to me.
I feel like this article is only talking about UK, but I'm sure the US companies are thinking about it (I think there was one that did it, can't remember name). And there was definitely one in Canada who set traffic shaping to their service. Canadian users are also encrypting to get past it. It seems like there will always be a way.
My question is then, why does Java run so well on OS X? I know Apple optimized it. I KNOW Microsoft hates Java. How well does it run on Linux also? (I've never actually tried Java on Linux).
When there are univeral binaries or universal installs of Office, TurboTax, Super Print Shop Pro, etc... that run on Linux, MacOSX and Windows, then they will be able to deal with it.
So true, even I used to believe this. But I recently (last 4 months) realized how good OpenOffice and K-Office are at converting from Word (even Word 2003) to ODF. I've completely switched to OpenOffice even on Windows (even though the RAM usage due to Java is so high (DOES MICROSOFT DO THIS ON PURPOSE?!).
I've read an article where a Best Buy location actually reported someone to the police (unfortunately can't find the article). But either way, the result was Best Buy surely acting like police.
Perhaps you just have a ton of "illegally downloaded" content on your HD(s) on your laptop and are afraid to send it to servicing without taking out the HDs first. I don't know, but it sure sounds like you are afraid of something.
Real issue comes when the user can't even get to their data. Not everyone knows how to get into safe mode, or use a boot disk with NTFS drivers, or anything of the like.
They also probably format because they see all that downloaded music and movies and assume it's all illegally downloaded (which for many it probably is). They are probably told to format even more because of this.
I honestly don't see how Geek Squad is a very profitable business. IMO, anyone who calls Geek Squad is extremely computer illiterate, of course. The major issue is that Best Buy is selling their service to people who buy PCs at their store and the manufacturer's gets a sort of huge weight lifted off their shoulder because Best Buy does this. IMO, the manufacturers should be the ones providing the support over the phone with the warranty the way most do. This way, there is no pirated software. How does this tie with disk images? Simply, because if tech support can't solve the problem (had to have really screwed something up), we all know that the major PC manufacturers don't give a real Windows disc, they provide an OEM disk image (also to prevent piracy to some extent). This is much better than having an illiterate user just reintsall Windows not knowing what's going on.
Another issue here. How come Best Buy can't use free software like HijackThis, Spybot S&D, RegCleaner and even AVG (if necessary, most PCs come with NORTON unfortunately). All these tools are free and have helped me solve some problems right away (I actually use NOD32). If it's that bad, I will simply "reformat" using the "good" disk image. It saves a ton of time and takes about 8 or 9 minutes to write.
The fact that companies can charge $1200 for these "diagnostic tools" is a bit absurd. Is anyone that stupid? Correct me if I'm wrong, but what does this software honestly do that is so great (for $1200) especially considering you only use it for problems? Anyone know?
Any flaws from Microsoft software are worth a Slashdot story? Not in my opinion. See, flaws in Microsoft software are an everyday thing for me. Very used to it.
I don't use IE for much, but it's not like everyone's going to hit the site with the exploit. I'm sure more than ~95% won't. Count how many articles about flaws in IE have been posted on this site, and how many of Firefox. I think Firefox may be worth reporting on here, but only because Firefox is still not used as much as people would hope. And because Firefox is still in development, compared to IE.
Once everyone has Firefox, it'll become an everyday thing to hear about Firefox exploits and waste pages for it.
Absolutely. And when he said the earth was just 6,000 years old I laughed. Basically, he was citing this calculation of Adam & Eve's time, which makes the Earth 6,000 years old if it was created shortly before them.
It's most interesting that just last night, the Sopranos episode had Tony getting sewed up before leaving the hospital and the pastor from the church came in and one person said that prayer helps surgery patients. The pastor said that it leads to less complications.
Is this why this got posted (to contradict last night which really does come from a real study)? (Not that I believe prayer does anything...)
When referring to "slow food", he's referring to how wherever he lives, McD & BK are slow. I agree on BK, because at every BK I've been to I've waited at least 3 minutes. The thing that makes me mad about this is how I prefer BK over McD, and there's only a BK at my mall where I work at Sears, so when I go on break I go to BK and expect my meal within 90 seconds after finishing the order. Why? It's because I worked at McD, and during training they tell you that the meal must be given to the customer within 90 seconds. Sounded crazy to me at first, but it actually happens and I remember the "assembly line" at McD. It was hectic at 5PM everyday.
And secondly I would hate it. I search in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean all the time on Google looking for sites in those languages (whether it be song lyrics, information, language itself, articles, etc). The Internet is the reason why I can read/write Hangul, Hiragana, and Katakana, and why I know so much Hanzi/Kanji/Hanja.
I also take time to speak with people from Asian countries on Skype, and it helps me to learn these languages way more (and also French and Spanish too).
Exactly the point of my post. I seriously am still not convinced to upgrade. I've tried several betas (even the leaked Longhorn a while back) and no matter what all I see is eye candy effects compared to XP.
Who cares?!!!!!! Who seriously gives a fucking shit?!!!
I'm completely serious, modders.
What's with the phrase "straight to DVD"?

Yes, it's very straightforward but still it sounds retarded if you ask me. "not just DVD" would've worked just as well in the last sentence. I've read "straight to DVD" in several places but I guess now it's becoming a household phrase. I certainly won't use it. It sounds retarded.
I feel the exact same way about it. I wonder how many people have "lost money" or rather lost available credit, especially those who have maxed out cards this way. It's really bad.
The only problem is, how do you do online transactions without a credit card? Even if it's PayPal, someone could just take some cash off a credit card. PayPal as far as I know does not separate credit money from money taken from a savings account.
And checks are not reliable because it could bounce. Cash is definitely not an option as a person could just not send the money owed. You can't jail people for not paying. Of course you can sue, but even those end up where the plaintiff gets no money anyway.
Anonymity is a problem also. People always want it on the Internet, even me. So what I just said would be the result of someone wanting to be anonymous and thinking they'll never get caught not sending the money. On top of that, if it's illegal in their state, what's the point of going after other than getting them arrested?
I'm against this bill, but there's gotta be a better way to pay. The best would be a system exactly the same as PayPal with no option for credit card, so all money is from personal savings accounts. Also helps because most people are not going to put their entire savings up for bets.
Completely agree. They absolutely don't need us. Same goes for Iraq and anywhere else. I wish the US would stay out of foreign affairs, but it seems like these people "leading" our country have nothing better to do. So true. I fucking hate sites like that. Whatever happen to plain old HTML?

That's sad to read.

True that second line. The US spends at minimum $400 billion per year on the CIA & FBI. Sad.

you guys here at slashdot need to get some originality.
