The RIAA has something to do with this? I wansn't aware of that.
Does it even look like the lawmakers in favor of this will be able to influence the others? Seems like it would be a difficult thing to do (if you don't consider bribes and such).
Well...I'm a 17-year-old male. I REALLY don't appreciate a scantily clad woman popping up on my screen, especially while I'm at school. It's embarrassing....it makes people think you to be some sort of perv.
Oh, I wasn't insulting the technology, nor the achievements of those involved in this competition. I think things like this are wonderful, and should get more media attention and perhaps government funding. I was just simply confused as to why the speed was so low (I understand now, after reading all the replies... THANKS, guys!).
19.1 mph? I mean, congradulations to the winners, and I'm sure there's a reason for the speed to be so low...but can anyone explain what that is to me?
I mean, I can understand the fastest solar-powered vehicle going just over 100..... but what is the reason for these driverless vehicles? I understand that they navigate these things by themselves, but is there any other reason? Is the track pretty much nothing but ridiculous curves or something?
I think you misspelled "clubbed". The biggest problem, from my perspective, is that too many people seem to think that the RIAA is a government institution, and don't really question it. If news like this was to be put on a major news network, such as CNN, then I think we'd be seeing changes.
"The record industry... believes the recording capability [of satellite radio receivers] is a clear copyright violation and could take revenue away from paid download music services."
So satellite radio might hurt downloadable music, which the RIAA wants to kill, also? Honestly, I hate the RIAA...Satellite radios let you record music? You know what? So do cassette tapes... and they have, for years.
So what you're saying is that if it's ok for us to force HBO to "share" content with us, we can come and "share" cheese from your house?
I'll admit that I download copies of programs that I haven't paid for and such (mostly anime that is not out in English yet, and stuff like that), but I don't try to justify any of that by saying that I'm "getting a sample" by downloading every episode (although I am one of the few that I know of that occasionally buy some of the content that I download, to help the developers...most people who say that they do, don't really, though).
While I enjoy my free programs, I do agree that HBO has every right in the world to not "share" their products with us, if they wish.
I used to work at Subway. Our POS machine was a Dell computer with some crappy software on it (And yes, if I minimized the thing, I could play Solitaire or anything else I wanted to do with a Windows machine). Heh...had to Alt+Tab the program, otherwise I couldn't get it to minimize (there was no minimize button..just a "close". If I closed it, I could not reopen it unless I had a password, which only my manager knew).
Anyways, the program would often crash. When I would work, I would be the only employee there (I knew how to run the place myself, and they took advantage of that). My manager (a very bad one...1 week after I quit, she got fired), took upwards of 2 hours to reach at times...and then a 10-minute drive...so the machine would be out of order for 2 hours, at times.
Funny thing is...I'd still sell things. I'd keep track of everything (with pen and paper) I sold, and did all the math in my head... I had a key to the register, so I'd leave it open... never came up more than 10 cents off.
Now if Linux is too hard for a Chess Grand Mater, we are in trouble.
Does such a species exist? Very few chess players know how to mate...I'd be surprised if there were any masters.
Anyways, I don't see why people even bother with chess programs for the computer. It's a completely different experience than playing REAL chess (at least at the tournament level). Computers tend to play very... illogically at times, as odd as that may sound.
A few years ago, when I was rated 1200 (USCF), I had played so many chess programs so much that, while I could not achieve a 1300 rating, I was getting progressively better against the computer... and moving on to tougher and tougher levels.
Well, not only did the Dutch set a new record...the record they beat was their own! According to their official webpage, though, the Nuna 3 has a top speed of about 160 km/h!
Honestly, though... I doubt they'll ever be able to successfully censor the internet. There are too many people in China for them to keep an eye on everyone...
I searched for all topics on Slashdot that were classified under "Google", and the 360th was something from 2004(!)... it won't go any farther back than that.
Why not just leave the animation in the native language and add subtitles?
Well, that's the way that I buy all of my anime, but most of the friends that I have that are into anime (not as heavily as I am, but still)...well, they just flat-out refuse to watch it in Japanese. The dubs will also attract more new fans.
Honestly, I doubt his report would have gotten around quite as much if it would have been reported correctly. And now that the correct info is getting out, he's getting even more publicity. In the end, I think that Wilson probably is going to benefit from this.

you can have access to an incredibly extensive and diverse shared iTunes library and crank all you want.
Seriously, though...is it not possible that the iPod was developed w/o Apple having any knowledge of this? It's not like this is some mega-complicated design... it's a small, sqaure MP3 player.
They want us to pay more than $.99 for a song? For this to be such a big deal to them, you know this has to mean at least a $.50 increase on songs from the biggest artists.
Now, $1.50 per song from...well, let's say 50 Cent, as he seems to be pretty big. His album,Get Rich or Die Trying , which sells for $12.99 (correct?), has 16 songs...now, I'm assuming that some of these songs are just little sound clips...so let's assume this album has 12 REAL songs...so it would cost $18 to buy this song in it's digital format on iTunes (in the record industry's topsy-turvey world).... $18 for me to be able to have this $12.99 Cd on my computer? That's really crappy of them.
I actually just got theough watching that episode about 20 minutes ago.
Anyways, while the example that TFA is a bit...far-fetched (who the hell would leave their will on a CD-Rom?), this is a really good issue... I don't think we'll ever have to worry about this, though..... at least, not until we no longer have the internet...
I have to agree completely. Hell, my girlfriend wouldn't even go to her Philosophy class if it wasn't a very active class. In addition to causing the students to remember/learn more, it just plain makes class more interesting to have big, active discussions.
Doesn't pick too many targets that I consider interesting (it's mostly meant to amuse)... but it is a pretty neat device that they've built.

Or a "download as much music as you possibly can" day. That'd be amusing.
So satellite radio might hurt downloadable music, which the RIAA wants to kill, also? Honestly, I hate the RIAA...Satellite radios let you record music? You know what? So do cassette tapes... and they have, for years.

My question for you is:
What is the price, in USD, of a frappaccino?

Next up, for those of you who can't tell, this is UK-only.
Now, here's my question: Is this service really all it's cracked up to be? Anyone know anyone else on it?
Honestly, I doubt his report would have gotten around quite as much if it would have been reported correctly. And now that the correct info is getting out, he's getting even more publicity. In the end, I think that Wilson probably is going to benefit from this.
I'll learn to program.

Actually, I'd rent them both...
