It seems like Verizon, Sprint or someone could make a boatload of money from opportunities like this. They could have a few mobile cell towers that run from generators. When a tornado, hurricane, wind storms, or whatever hit, they truck those towers in as temporary replacements. The local government will appreciate it. The local cell phone users will appreciate it. The people not on their plan will make them a bundle in roaming fees!
They could store them centrally inthe country. Since they usually have a large warning, they could get them nearby the pending storm. Right after the storm clears, instant tower.
Did I complain that they weren't useful?
I was merely stating that they weren't spending any noticable amout from the budget on computers.
For the needs of most elementary schools, 10 year old computers should suffice.
"- Organize adult-supervised bicycle rides for kids who live within 3 miles of their schools "
Where I live, you have to live in farther than 3 miles to be eligible to ride the bus
"- Stop buying computers for primary schools that provide little educational value compared to cheap books and good teachers. The savings could pay for school bus "
The primary school my son is in has computers, but they are 7+ year old Macs. It doesn't look like too much of the budget is going to computers.
"- Replace old school bus with efficient new ones. Perhaps even a hybrid concept or something similar. Very high cost upfront, but gas savings. "
Again, where I live busses are contracted out. If it were cheaper to operate new ones, then I'm sure they would be converted.
"- Raise taxes. Gap! yes! raise *YOUR* taxes so that *YOUR* children may go to school and have a chance at a good education and a good future, a concept America as a whole has completely forgotten for some reason. "
I think schools are fine the way they are. More money via taxes would only make them better though.
Personally, I feel teachers make decent money. I know someone who has been teaching for 3 years and already makes over $40k. They live in the south where it is cheap to live. I also know several IT people who make that same amount but don't get many of the teacher perks. People seem to forget that teachers only work about 180 days per year. They get 3 months off during the winter. They get 2+ weeks off for Xmas. They often only work 7 hour days. That includes a 30 minute lunch! If you work 7 hour days for 190 days(10 admin days) then you are working 1330 hours per year. That's about $30/hour if you make $40k/year. If they worked like the rest of corporate America they would make about $62k. That's not too bad. College professors even have it better!!
I'm glad it runs Linux because everyone knows that MRIs cost so much and are so complicated only because they run Windows. I bet now that they are running Linux, a MRI will only cost about $20 and any 10th grader will be able to operate it.
Another added benefit will be its superior security. I'd hate all those MRI machines connected straight to the internet to be vulnerable to hacking. Someone could take control and give a patient a superdose and inadvertantly give them superpowers!
This sounds good for 20 years tops. After that you will have a bunch of cemetaries with ancient broken technology in them.
Perhaps if you instead place something like a USB thumb drive in the stone it would last much much longer. Then whenever you visit the grave the cemetary manager or some local place could loan/rent you a LCD screen that you could plug into the stone and watch whatever video was stored. Then as technology progress they could upgrade the screens.
I don't know how long a thumb drive can last in the elements, but I bet its longer than and type of monitor.
If they all died out 13000 years ago it can't exactly be blamed on modern man. Even men of 13000 years ago wouldn't have been likely to systematically kill several species. There weren't that many people and they were still roaming around in small groups.
I like elephants, lions, ligers, and tions as much as the next guy. Nonetheless, I'd rather have a nuclear plant near me then a wild animal preserve. I'd definately be a lot safer! I've heard some of those creatures can even do magic.
Since crocs have been around since dinosaurs they have probably had to deal with many many variations of virii, bacteria, etc. Many have probably come and gone and may come again through mutation. By being exposed they have probably been quite successful at creating various defenses. Perhaps croc blood contains millions of antibodies for countless extinct microscopic invaders. The only problem with that theory is that over time those immunities may disappear if they are no longer needed or a benefit. It may not happen quickly, but over 1000 generations that resistance may go away.
Well, there's only one way to be sure. I'm going to go inject some croc blood and bang a few hookers to try this theory out!
Many organizations only use their networks for mail, file, and print services. If they are working to everyone's satisfaction and are within the accepted budget then performing countless metrics can just be a waste of time.
Why should you make major changes if all is working well and within budget?
I'm not interested in trying a polished functional alternative to XP. I am an IT admin and XP actually suites all my needs. My users need email, file and printing services, Internet/Intranet access, interoperability with other businesses(the ability to send/read files for the average user), and ease of use. XP takes care of all of that. They are familiar with it. Its easy to hire people who can manage a network based on XP. We don't get viruses and our biggest problem is rare network outages when weather is usually a factor. Yes, the license fees are high but the manpower and frustration that would come from using another OS would be higher. If we went all OS X there would be constant complaints about how isn't like what they have at home, how documents sent elsewhere don't open/print correctly, etc.
XP may not be perfect but it doesn't crash 5 times daily like some people here seem to believe.
I believe that your $5/gallon of gas in Europe is your own fault. I saw that $4 of that is taxes. Much of the US only has about $1 tax per gallon. If we taxed at that rate we too would have $5/gallon gas.
"Sony should sew this person for gazillions of dollars".
If they sew him, I hope they use a small needle and that kind of thread that eventually dissoves in your body.
I see someone has recently taken a Models of Computation class and likes to show off. Will you be talking about Finite State Machines and Cellular Automata next?
This will never fly. The DVD/Video industry that is currently booming for automobile installs will kill this. How are they supposed to connect to the internet? Are they going to have a phone jack in the headrest that you have to run 100 feet into your house? No one is going to want to do that and the cords will get lost and damaged. It might take a year for the word to spread, but it won't be too long before anyonw who has one spreads the word that they are a hastle.
Where I live we pay about 7 cents per KWH. For a 9 hour day that 50 watts will cost about 3.5 cents. That turns into about $8/year. Perhaps if people left their PCs on 24/7 then you could have your $33 savings. Still, I regularly see 17" CRT monitors for $99 while flat panels are at least $300. Either would be long dead before you would see any cost savings.
Going to space sounds cool and all but few here even consider the oceans an option. Instead of flying off to some other planet and having to mine water and oxygen, we could create colonies under or on our oceans. They could pump their air from the atmosphere above or create it from the water. If something went wrong they could return to the surface. If something goes wrong in space, there's a good chance you are boned!
It would be sooo much easier to establish a colony underwater. There would be less risk, less cost, more people willing, etc. If you were to settle on the Moon or Mars you would likely be saying goodbye forever to anyone on Earth. That wouldn't be the case underwater. Whatever techniques learned could also be applied in the future when leaving LEO doesn't cost a fortune.
Ever heard of the butterfly effect? Its not just a movie with Amy Smart! Mmmm, Amy Smart.
Its proven scientific fact that butterflies start hurricanes and all kinds of other natural disasters. Well, that's what I heard!
Lots of companies make products that can be used for both legal ald illegal purposes. No one is going to go to jail for making some software that merely allows people to swap files.
Everytime somplace tries to make a law to limit/minimize illegal file sharing people here get all antsy. If you don't share things you aren't supposed to you won't get in trouble. If you don't like the laws concerning copyright, fight to change them. Why does everyone feel they have a right to do anything they want to simply because they can?
If Microsoft could make one large enought to hold XP and Office they could sell a ton to businesses. It could start/restart faster, run faster, and possiblly be less vulnerable. You would want to be able to perform flash upgrades. The best part would be that it would be very difficult to pirate. MS would love that feature. I'm sure there would still be a hdd version but this could be big if they got Dell/Compaq/Gateway to integrate it into their systems.
Like others have said, this would take ungodly hdd capacity, tons of CPU power, and a lot of electricity. And what do you get? 5 channels? 30 channels? How many are shopping channels? Who needs every channel recorded?
Do people need to go back and see what the weather channel was forcasting 17 days ago? Do they like to see what QVC was selling last Friday night? Do they care to see the afternoon news for last Wednesday?
While this is talking about England, I'm sure they want to market it to Europe and the US. I don't see it happening. As most people who admint to watching TV here say, they only watch a small handful of channels. They couldn't care less what happens on 95% of what they are paying to recieve. Therefore why would they want to record it?
On the other hand, an ultra high capacity PVR would be nice. My Dish PVR holds about 100 hours of programming. I usually have it at 50% capacity. Sometimes I find/refind a new show and record 10-20 hours of it. It would be nice if I had 5000 hours capacity. Then I could archive a lot of those shows indefinately. That isn't going to happen though until there is a cheap 5TB hdd available.
Plop a few transmitters on the surface with small nuclear heat sources on their bottom. Let them melt the ice below them and make a tunnel straight down. Eventually it will cave in on top of the probe and make transmissions more difficult. It could take various readings as it melted its way through.
Red Adair fought oil derick fires with high explosives. The would use all the oxygen in the area and smother the fire. That isn't going to work on a wildfire.
If I want my child to learn about death, I will buy them a goldfish. Not a video game.
If I want them to learn about sex, I will tell them myself. Not rent them a porno.
If I want them to learn about poverty in the 3rd (and 1st) world I will show them a documentary/book/explain it myself. I will not buy them Nike shoes.
Speak for yourself. My parents bought me pornos, video games, and Nikes and I turned out fine! As a matter of fact I was just watching Sally Struthers and thinking I needed two things.
1. A dozen donuts
2. A new soccer ball made a third world child. For just the price of a cup of coffee a day I can have that ball in a week.

I'm no whiz at this new math and all, but back in my day "$2,100,000.00" was closer to 2.1 million than billion.
