That didn't work because we were developing a thin client type of consumer device on VIA micro boards which had to do network boot with the kernel delivered by the ISP over the network and it was not possible to have a mounted rootfs - so almost everything required was in the kernel. On top of that VIA had notoriously difficult code for its drivers which would get modified by us with almost no knowledge & just trial and error. Good times.

Reminds of the old days when a linux kernel compile would take 6 hours and we were trying some modifications for VIA hardware which required hundreds of tries with minor changes in the driver codes - so we would start the compile with a script to play two different types of music on Error or Success, and then go to sleep.

If in the middle of the night it was dire straits then we would get up and debug/fix the errors and start a compile again; if it was some soothing instrumental we would continue sleeping knowing that its compiled.

Breakdown of order definitely requires one to keep such protection and I am all for automatic weapons to be allowed. Banning things only stops the good guys anyway

My point was that "having an assault weapon" and "having the guts to protest with a fair chance of dying" - are two different things. And the protests need a HUGE number of citizens before you can overthrow a tyrannical government.

And with such numbers its NOT the guns which are the critical factor in the overthrowing at all. It is only the sheer number of citizens which creates a fear of "revolt of the guards" situation for the Government because almost every soldier or policeman will have a loved one who has faced the brunt of the oppressive forces.

If it was only a smaller portion of the population protesting, even with automatic assault weapons, you would only have an Afghanistan like situation within the country. Armed forces derive more of their power from their organized operations, logistics & motivation than from the level of weaponry. And facing automatic weapons from random groups of citizens is going to keep their motivation pretty high as one thinks one is upholding the law. But facing huge number of unarmed pretesting citizens will always result in the rank & file starting to question their actions. Though it will have its cost in terms of number of citizens hurt or killed, but that will still be smaller than if you would be protesting with automatic assault weapons. Anyway, that's the theory. I have no personal experience of protesting against the Government at such scale.

  13. Its never about the level of Firepower.. on Newspaper That Published Gun-Owners List Hires Armed Guards · · Score: 5, Insightful
Governments being overthrown by the citizens is never ever about the level of firepower.

It is always about so many of the citizens being pissed enough to be willing to die in protests or go to jail in such large numbers that the Government is no longer sure of the support of large sections of its police, army, administration etc.

Doing that with assault rifles or unarmed like Gandhi is no different. An individual in both cases has to be willing to die, even if the overall fatalities as a group may be less or more.

How many US Citizens with assault rifles have ever protested against the TSA ? Can you even imagine them doing so ? Its probably better to protest unarmed against Governments. As a rule, the Government can't back down from an armed conflict till it has expended all its resources. Its quicker and cleaner, relatively, for hordes of people to protest, go to jail, get hurt, few even killed to make a sufficient impact.

In the end it is only about Numbers. Off course,

And its not possible to type on ANY touchscreen without looking at it all the time, with a BB you can steal a few glances every 4-5 seconds and keep typing !

I have been using it on a Nexus S 4G since last 6 months. Nothing much to install. Just download the image (3-4GB) and use the app to run a script which sets up devices and does chroot. Something with a hardware keyboard like the Motorola androids might be best for scripting etc.

Offcourse, if you want to play around with local devices or devices attached on USB host/otg etc of the phone, then you may prefer to run linux without chroot.

I have got 5-6 of these A10 tabs from different manufacturers (for a retail project) and all except one are really good and cost below USD 100. Where they score above the branded ones are that all have a fully functional host USB unlike Samsung Nexus etc which advertise USB OTD but its really iffy. So you can connect a variety of peripherals and also run native ubuntu 12.04 nowdays. (earlier it was only the chrooted linux - see xda for details)

Offcourse, they don't have brand recognition and in fact some have such funny names embossed on them that you would feel embarrassed taking them out in front of anyone ! Allwinner A10 has done an excellent job in getting usable tablets for the low end of the market. The earlier ones like rockchip/via etc were completely unusable.
