Aside from the Linpus OS, at least Acer doesn't easily roll over and die when it comes to Microsoft. Honestly, these companies have a chance to compete in the same place Apple is, but they're choosing to play it safe with Microsoft rather than create an environment that would be far superior for them. Yes, its partially the fault of poorly trained salespeople, and poorly targetted and marketed products. So fix that. /typed on an aspire one running linux.

EA says they will have staff standing by to grant more installations as necessary on a case by case basis. So, while this still isn't optimal, at least we are getting a compromise. Hopefully, if the piracy rate for the game is low, perhaps EA will get comfortable enough to ship with even less DRM in the future."

No. Not even in the face of Armageddon. Never compromise.

COMPROMISE? Yeah, instead of renting a game for 3 installs, you're renting it for 5. WELL WHOOPDEEDOO. I'm not paying for what amounts to a RENTAL. Maybe EA thinks they can buy copyright legislation and force DRM down our throats, but I won't be a part of it. They've pushed me too far.

If the piracy rate is low for their DRM'ed program perhaps they will have one with no DRM? What is wrong with you? NO! If there is ANY DRM AT ALL then it is fair game to pirate. I won't pay for a refrigerator with a lock on it that I can only get food out of if its plugged in to a GE power supply. Screw DRM. Any limits on our consumer rights are crimes against humanity.

This was the stupidest, worst reasoned article I've ever read on slashdot. And I remember the days of Jon Katz.

  3. Re:Possible reasons on Lenovo Removes Linux Option For Home Buyers · · Score: 1

I'm running a new SL400 series and almost everything works pretty well in Ubuntu Intrepid, aside from some function keys and some instability possibly due to the nature of Intrepid being unstable at this point in time. Wireless works great. Intel driver works with compiz, openGL and XV support are there. Can't hibernate though, but its more functional than I expected. I too asked for No Windows Vista/Linux. Sadly, Lenovo doesn't care. Hopefully the entrenched hardware companies will eventually have increased competition from startup linux hardware manufacturers. Just as Apple has carved itself a Niche, so can Linux only vendors in the coming year or two. Dell seems to be a smart company and is taking calculated steps to hedge its bets. If Dell comes out with some PC's with similar specs to thinkpads with the trackpoints and three mouse buttons, I'll consider them in the future. But Lenovo's forcing me to give money to Microsoft and (even worse) allowing microsoft to claim my laptop as a sale for Vista is annoying to no end, and I won't recommend them to anybody. Most Linux people are in a position to influence sales of Computers, and computer manufacturers annoy us at their own peril.

What gets me is that we have countries like Russia where it appears people are being silenced by death for speaking out against certain individuals, or even for no obvious reason. Or China or even the United States, or how about the case of Canada or Germany, where they have hate crimes laws, where if you want to say something like "sodomy is a sin" its a hate crime against homosexuals (maybe not, but it could be taken to that step) .. It's just a step towards restricting people from criticizing businesses, people, governments, and so on. It scares governments and corporations and media that the internet can be used against them. They want you to use the internet on their terms. So you can only go to certain websites, so you cant use internet telephony or download tv shows or music because it destroys their monopoly, and limits how many politicians they can buy off and how many laws they can buy. They're taking the first tentative steps right now it seems pretending its for the common good, when in reality its a subversive attempt to assert control over the new online society. Mark Twain, Lewis Carroll, Ann Landers, Dr Seuss, George Orwell, Cat Stevens, Elton John, Charlton Heston, Milli Vanilli, Coolio.. not their real names! The internet is a communications medium, just as literature, newspapers, movies, all have their own instances of using false names, so does the internet. You know what, I think its perfectly fine. If you want your kid to not be lured by child predators online, don't restrict my rights to talk on slashdot or on a blog using a pseudonym.
