The speed problem can often be solved just buy getting a faster hardware. The main reason Linus rejected microkernels back in the day was because the cost of context switches was prohibitive. Today hardware is lot faster (roughtly Moore's law), so context switches will be alright on a 3GHz Pentium IV machines while it would not be doable on a 33Mhz machines.

It's interesting that most microkernel advocates admit that it was to slow for older hardware but that doesn't matter now that machines have gotten so fast, yet when any review is done on an OS one of the main criteria is speed doing a task. It's by no means the defining criteria but it is an important one, especially in the Server realm. Even with the proposed stability of a microkernel many server roles are better served by something that is simpler and faster.

Where volume is concerned simplicity is better then anything else, many times I've had to sit down and work hard to optimize a recursive algorithm or an algorithm that is run thousands of times, even the smallest change that saves one or two compute cycles per run often saves 10 to 100 milliseconds when run N times on a full system. Several times I've seen "better" methods get tossed when they realize that it will not run quickly on production systems because the complexity can't handle the volume.

Actually going side by side trying to get the same options the prices come out to:

    • Macbook Pro: $2799
    • Dell Precision M90: $3119 (after a $175 discount)

Now it's true that the screen is different (15.4 Macbook VS 17 Dell) and you can push the Dell PC to much higher specs, but still I think the Macbook wins on this one, even if it's just barely.

It is interesting to note the memory options on the Dell notebook, first off all of them are 2 DIMMs, meaning that after you grab your memory option you can't upgrade it without throwing out your existing ram, on the MacBook the standard ram is 1GB and 1 DIMM, easy expansion option there! The other thing is that the option on the Dell for 4GB of ram is a cost of $2560 just for the upgrade!!! that's almost the base price for the whole Laptop! Unless you have an application that absolutly needs 4GB of ram no-one will be buying that option.

Another interesting option is the included software, the Mac includes iLife 06 on all it's models, this includes Garageband, iMovie, iDVD, and a few other great apps for editing audio and video. The closest you can get from Dell is the Adobe Production Studio Standard for an additional $799. I have no doubt that the Adobe option is a more professional product then iLife, but if we are looking at your average parent wanting to edit video of thier kid that's the only option that Dell provides. The Mac defenetly wins on that one.

More points for Mac, Bluetooth and Wireless are built in, for the Dell you have to select options for both, and only the Bluetooth can be built in, the wireless is actually a card that you have to plug in to use. Also the M90 has no built in video option, and no add-on option for video

One final point (in my scoring) for the Mac, it includes ALL of it's software on media (you get the install CD/DVDs for everything) on the Dell it's a seperate option that you have to check, by default you get it all on a 'recovery partition' on the harddrive. That's one of the worst ideas they ever came out with, not only does it use up some of your hard drive space for nothing, but it's also very easy for a virus or user error to corrupt (and yes, I've seen a PC with no media where the OS and the recovery partition were toast, they were totaly SOL on that one). Now granted the option to get your media from Dell is free, it's still an added option that you must check in order to get the media, and if you forget it's a major hassle to get it afterwords.

So on those counts the Mac wins over the Dell Precision M90, now you add the capablility for the Mac to dual-boot or VM into WinXP and the Mac OS X's Stability, usability, and performance, and the M90 is blown away.

Now all I have to do is save up enough pennies.....

They look like the cases are custom built by Koolance even though they are standard cases that are modified.

The best thing they offer is temperature monitoring hardware that will increase the fan speed when the temp starts climing and will shut down the PC if it goes past the limit (very nice if something breaks down it will shut it off before letting it roast). I got one from them for an Athalon 1ghz CPU that would idle at 120f, with this system it would idle at around 85f and wouldn't get over 105f unless I had the wood-stove stoked (in which case the room temp was over 100).

It's just that if you look at Microsoft's early history, it was all about "sticking it to the man".

I'd like to know how that works when you are 'the man' getting stuck? In those early days IBM was 'the man' (along with all the other UNIX Mainframe people) and the Microsoft was a company built out of the homebrew meetings and Gate's basement. In those days Microsoft was the Rebel. Nowadays Microsoft is 'the man', they are the overlords, the Evil Empire, the oddly dressed guy named 'cats' saying something about 'base'.

I think the problem is that Microsoft has lost the edge of the customer's perception, also I think the customer base has grown more intelligent over the years. Most people working with computers today have Grown up with computers and are starting to look for something different, and in doing so have found alternatives to MS that work better, and are starting to find them before MS copies them. They are starting to see the trend that MS has of seeing something good and trying to take it over (and doing it badly 1/2 the time).

Unfortunately the majority of people using computers are barely computer literate and just want to plug something in and do what they want without fuss. That is where Microsoft should focus; making a product that plugs in and does what you want with no fuss muss or anything else. However I think Mac already has a big edge in that market that MS will never catch up with. (with Mac's closed architecture they can control combinations and improve reliability/interoperability/ease-of-use easily, however MS has to support in some way a nearly infinite amount of 3rd party stuff that has problems interacting with each other and with the OS, MS is kinda in a bind there)

I think the thing that Bill Gates fears has come true but in a way that he hasn't quite expected, others are more innovative then he is and MS is loosing the race, but it isn't from one competitor but from the community itself (Open Source). Because MS has spread out into so many markets and so many products they are getting competition in each market that they are unable to quickly respond to, they are loosing the battle, slowly.

I don't think that we will ever see MS completely disappear, but I think they will slowly fade into the background as newer and faster products/companies/OS communities keep showing up with better products. In the end I think they will be like IBM, not out of the computer market, just not a leader.
