    Apparently you are the noob. I didn't say there were no new ones, I just said there weren't many. The company that you mentioned is trying to build a new airplane that is kind of bellanca like.

    Those guys own the type certificate, and have built several of the airplanes. As far as I know, they built one Bellanca Viking in 2006 (maybe even 05) which has not yet sold.

    The airplane that this guy was flying actually was a bellanca citabria. I didn't read enough of the article to notice that before. Those are now built by American Champion:

    There aren't exactly a lot of "new bellancas", but if it were one, I don't really understand how that would make a difference. They still use mags, so there's nothing that would kill the engine that would also kill the radio.

    Unless you count post-crash fire. :(

    Yes, VS offers those features. But they are more awkward, slower, and more quirky than Eclipse. Eclipse's parser is much smarter at handling errors than VS.

    A small syntax error can make virtually all of the intellisense features in VS worthless, whereas eclipse will just highlight the error and move on.

    If you really believe this, then you haven't used very many .Net apps under MS and Mono.

    I use (and have written) plenty of Java apps that do not break between minor versions as well. Oracle and other losers that write version specific junk don't count. :)

    many "modern" distributions, you use "sudo" instead of "su", which makes it virtually impossible to accidentally give an application admin-level privileges, as you've got to explicitly call it for every root-level process that you execute.


    Unless you are lazy. Then it's sudo /bin/bash

    I don't know anyone lazy enough to ever do that, though. ;)

    There was a report several years ago that the US had used the rock outcroppings behind Osama in one of his videos to attempt to locate him. I wonder if some of these modifications are made to make locating them more difficult?

    I was going to point you to http://www.mgmaps.com/, but apparently Google stopped allowing the software to use their maps YESTERDAY. This is a sign from God that Google is evil...

    Regardless, the software is top class and allows the use of a GPS with maps from other providers...


    It is also a J2ME app, which makes it useless for iPhone users.

    I've never heard of a kit.

    There are quite a few people who have chosen to paint their Deloreans, though.

    Personally, I prefer the original stainless.

    My local cable company offers a DVR for a $5 a month rental, if I order the HD Cable package I get one for free. Where is my incentive to buy a Tivo? Not only will have to pay $X hundred up front for the device but I STILL have to pay a subscription fee.


    This is exactly the problem!

    The one year contract for tivo is 16.95 a month! On top of that, they have shown a remarkable willingness to increase the price at a rate far higher than inflation.

    If you sign up for 3 years, it is still 12.95, which is certainly not cheap.

    I can't justify doing that.

    It is amazing how often I've struggled to install a piece of hardware on windows. Then I reboot into Linux and it just works.

    There are elements of truth to what you say, but it still doesn't add up. I suspect your car engine would not last nearly as long if you held it at 75% power output all of the time.

    And you really need to compare torque figures to compare automotive engines to airplane engines. RPM is a factor in HP calculations, but it really screws up the comparison. Airplane engines like to run at lower RPMs than car engines, giving them a disadvantage. Most are very comparable on torque, and comparable on hp as well if run at similar rpms.

    Looks like you should have studied harder. Some of your facts are halftruths, especially this one:

    Color-blindness is not a disqualifier. They'll make you do what's called a "SODA" test to determine that you are able to differntiate between the colors used by ATC in the event of comm failure.

    Most people pass w/ some practice.

    $100 for a 152? Yikes, the highest that I had seen was ~75. You could buy one for a couple hundred hours of flight time at that rate.

    There is nothing to do in the country. You can't even find a place to buy any of the equipment required to do any of the fun stuff all that open space makes possible (paragliding, light aircraft, spelunking, hell even fishing and hunting really)


    Do you have any idea how many private runways there are out in the country? You know, for all those paragliders, and light aircraft that you say are not available?

    Back when I live in the country, I was a few miles from a ultralight airpark (of course, those were more numerous back then, too, it seems).

    There is a lot of blame to go around for unsecure bank transactions. In the example, we are presented w/ the whole case of user on unsecured wireless. I think the lack of security of the bank in that case is the end users - I never would do bank transactions on an unsecured network except in extreme cases.


    So then you never bank over the internet?

    (hint... you should treat a wired internet connection that you "control" with just as much suspicion as a wireless one)

    The mall kiosks are also the source of one of the funniest direct mail goofups that I've ever seen by a large company like this, as well. The back of one of their advertisements once included a map of the US states along with all of the states with the kiosks highlighted. For some reason, it caught my eye that NC wasn't highlighted, even though I knew that there was one in Concord, NC.

    Then I noticed that W. Va. was highlighted but the store address list above didn't say anything about W. Va.

    It really impressed me seeing the little "NC" inside of W. Va. on their map.

    I guess their marketing department's geography skills were a bit rusty that week. :-)
